The yield strength of steel Fy drops significantly when its heated, it does not have to melt to be weak enough to fail. Once that happens the building is done. Grab a structures book and read, if you still have questions after then we'll talk.
an uncontrolled fire will max out at 1500F. It takes about 2000f to weaken the steal. Even then it will only warp. Not break apart into thousands of pieces. Exploding outward. The only way those buildings sould have come down like that is to be pulverized. Remeber they fell at close to free fall speed, 1 second off.
1000 degrees F can weaken the yielding stress of steel by 90%. The steel will buckle, the things you saw "exploding" were the glass and concrete that the steel was holding. The reason that it fell close to the free fall speed is once the initial failure had begun the amount of load that was place on each floor as the building came down was so much higher that the design load that failure occurred almost instantly. Talk to an engineer if you have more questions.

the melting point of steel is 2400 degrees F. 1000 degrees wont do a thing to it. an open air uncontrolled falme will only get up to 1400 degrees F. plus the buildings didnt burn for 90 minutes like they said. the flame lasted a few minutes, and for the rest of the time smoke was coming out of the buildings. when u see smoke coming out thats an indication of a flame thats loosing oxygen. and oxygen is what it needs to grow.

Has any building especially one made of steel, ever collpase due to fire? there is a reason why they make buildings out of steel. in 2005 a steel building in Madrid burned all night were are talking about a rageging fire all night and it stiil stayed intact and didnt collapse. yet the south tower of the wtc came down in 90 min. i just dont add up. looked more like a controlled demolition to me. study the facts first before u run your mouth.

Basic chem? I've taken thermo- but thats not the point if you would wrap your brain around the fact the steel does NOT need to melt to fail below design strength you would be better off. BTW the melting point of metals in those books indicate at what temp and pressure the substance will undergo a phase change.-Nothing to do with the yield strength of the metal. You read a book-good, now move on to a more advanced one.

lol F=ma is the equation anyone who knew jack about physics would use to solve this prob and its ½ mV^2. It did get crushed, so does a bullet when it hits a person, that doesn't mean that it won't put a nasty hole in you. The yield strength of steel Fy drops significantly when its heated, it does not have to melt to be weak enough to fail. Once that happens the building is done. Grab a structures book and read, if you still have questions after then we'll talk.

an uncontrolled fire will max out at 1500F. It takes about 2000f to weaken the steal. Even then it will only warp. Not break apart into thousands of pieces. Exploding outward. The only way those buildings sould have come down like that is to be pulverized. Remeber they fell at close to free fall speed, 1 second off.

1000 degrees F can weaken the yielding stress of steel by 90%. The steel will buckle, the things you saw "exploding" were the glass and concrete that the steel was holding. The reason that it fell close to the free fall speed is once the initial failure had begun the amount of load that was place on each floor as the building came down was so much higher that the design load that failure occurred almost instantly. Talk to an engineer if you have more questions.

the melting point of steel is 2400 degrees F. 1000 degrees wont do a thing to it. an open air uncontrolled falme will only get up to 1400 degrees F. plus the buildings didnt burn for 90 minutes like they said. the flame lasted a few minutes, and for the rest of the time smoke was coming out of the buildings. when u see smoke coming out thats an indication of a flame thats loosing oxygen. and oxygen is what it needs to grow.

The professor's point on encouraging critical thinking is a valid one. In order to be a logical, intelligent, thinking being one needs to be able to discuss ideas critically and to see things from each side of the argument in order to be able to reach one's own conclusion. It's a vital part of college/university-level education and for him to include such a topic in his course is only legitimate.
