@TheRetronator I used the Ultra module with the only effect being the POD's version of the Ibanez Tube Screamer. I think I used the Ultra XL for the solo with a Digitech Whammy pedal at the end.
I've watched this video countless times. I can't help it. I'm mezmerized by the fluid movement of the human hand and it's ability to move so damn fast!!! I'm fairly new to the electric guitar. I started on a classical guitar and now I have a pick in my hand. I received a LTD guitar for Christmas and I'm in love. Thanks for the help and encouragement.
Sennhiser E609 <--- Good Mic too.... Made for the guitar !!! Also Eleven Rack by Avid (Digiddesign) puts everything to shame when it comes to recording...
@djcrazyjimmy Ah, I'll have to look those up. Since this video I've been pretty happy with the SM57 I've been borrowing, but eventually I'll have to put out and buy a mic. Thanks for the suggestions!
why didn't you get a peavey 5150II sir...that mesa 1/4 cab is crying...it wants some rich chords going to it...fix the tone...other than that...spot on!
You nailed this song, but the tone is horrible. A tried and true mic that you'll find in almost every recording studio in the world is the Shure SM57. If you use that and put it directly in front of one of the cones about 9 inches away, the tone will be MUCH better. You might even ask yourself "WTF was I thinking?!"
@SkooterBush Haha, yeah I know!!! If you haven't seen it yet, I just did a redo of Driven with an SM57 and it puts this tone to shame. Thanks for the honesty too, bro.
Hey JDD36, I've been wondering how you figure out the tunings for the Sevendust songs you've covered so far. The only ones I've been able figure out on my own were the songs from Alpha, Next, and Chapter VII that are in Drop B tuning.
@kwambo Well for this song I was fortunate to have the official leak video to study. Watching John's fingers on the solo gave away the tuning for me. Otherwise I usually I try to listen for open notes. They tend to have a subtly different tone so once I figure those out I can go from there. I will say that most if not all of Cold Day Memory seems to be in the same variant tuning as Forever. For example, I can confirm that Karma and Splinter are in the Drop B variant thanks to those open notes.
@JDD36 That must tough but you're pretty good at that. Yeah I figured Karma and Splinter would be in some weird Drop B type tuning after looking at your other videos. Isn't The End is Coming and Better Place in the same tuning as the previously mentioned songs?
@kwambo Yeah, Better Place is in that tuning as well. I can't promise with The End Is Coming yet, as there aren't any open notes. But once I start learning the solo to it, I'll have a better idea. I messed with it briefly and it seems so line up well. I'm almost ready to say that the whole album is this tuning, but don't want to say until I know beyond any doubt. I want to make sure I do this whole album 100% right, and that also goes for tunings, something I've been mistaken with in the past.
@JDD36 Ah ok. Figuring out the solo is another good idea that would help. How have you been recording now compared to how you did at first. I want to make some videos to help a friend learn some songs and I thought the way you were doing was the best idea. I also noticed that you wear headphones while you're playing. Are you listening to the song while you're playing?
@kwambo Yep, you're correct. Basically I record all of the guitar parts with Adobe Audition and get everything perfect. Then I put it onto my iPod to listen to while I "mime" the guitar part for the video recording. That's how I've been doing it since adding the picture in picture. Back in the Alpha days, I did everything in one shot. But I've been noticing more and more guitarists doing it the way I do in the last couple months.
@JDD36 Oh ok. Yeah a lot of the really good guys that do covers, yourself included, use the picture in picture. The first guy I ever saw do it was halcyon1871. Check him out if you haven't. I think he uses a different program other than Adobe Audition but I'm not sure. So after you record the guitar parts, do you record it next to the actual song?
@kwambo Hey, sorry it's taken me forever to get back to you. Yeah, again, all the audio you hear is done in Audition. So first I load the mp3 into Audition. Then I'll record, let's say, the choruses, then I'll record the verses, and so on. After that everything is pieced together so it's one fluid track. I hope that makes sense. If you have any more questions, feel free to send me a message. It's a little easier that way.
Hey man! I came across you awhile back and thought Holy S***. You inspired me to do my own cover man! You rock. Please check out my cover of Splinter!
Darren, excellent cover dude! I just went out and bought the new album Friday night at like 1am haha, its outstanding. What are your favorites? Of course forever, but I'm also feeling here and now, last breath, ride insane, better place. Those really pop out to me, but anyways great cover, spot on as usual. Mine is up now too, check it out brother!
Darren, you blow my mind. Really. You are an amazing guitarist. God has really blessed you with a boatload of talent. I love the new guitar, and the Randall sounds sick! And, as always, your cover was flawless. Keep up the phenomenal work, man!
Brutha, you are the Bruce Lee of Sevendust covers. Freakin' Fists of Fury on this one!! Amazing job and your playing keeps inspiring me. I'm gonna have to have you teach me a thing or two. And the tone is wicked, too. We definitely got to get this thing going!
yes!!! i have the same guitar and i absolutely love it! are you happy with super distortion? how would you compare it versus stock, what do you like better and why?
i have both stock pickups, and through hughes & kettner switchblade 100 they sound pretty fine to me...
@danijel370 You gotta love Dean guitars! I'm a Dean player for life! And yes, the super distortion is amazing. The stock pickups are a little smoother. More like velvet, so I'll still use my purple guitar for the softer stuff. But the super distortion sounds excellent for the heavy stuff. It has more grit and really packs a punch. Harmonics seem more responsive too. I actually like the clean tone of the stock pickups a little better though. If you've got anymore questions feel free to hit me up!
Yo dude, I appreciate you posting this on Ultimate-Guitar. I don't know if you take requests or not but if you're working on their new material, any chance of doing "The End Is Coming"? That song fucking KILLS.
You fuckin nailed one of the best Sevendust songs ever. Great video man

When the groove kicks in at 0:26 what module is that, Ultra or Ultra XL?
Any added FX/EQ, or just straight amp tone?
Cheers
