@4o1Gaming It was a wax cylinder that was used to record sounds. Like records, the sound was recorded in groves, which a needle translates to sound. The needle goes around the outside of the cylinder as the cylinder spins. Although pre-recorded cylinders were no longer sold by the 1920s, blank cylinders were used for personal recording into the 1950s (cassette tape wasn't invented yet).

The guy held it wrong. You're supposed to stick 2 fingers in the cylinder and not touch the outside.
