Ah. Well when I watched it (I'd heard about it first, then read the folktale, and THEN watched the film) - I realized afterwards it wouldn't have made much sense to me as a ghost story if I hadn't of read the folktale first, might have just been my brain though lol.

A key part of the tale though, that if I remember correctly, wasn't really apparent in the film, was that the father doesn't find out until the end that the step-mother was the problem all along.

This is the most original horror movie plots that I've seen in a LONG time that I REALLY enjoyed. Very subtle and extremely eerie like most Japanese, Korean and other Asian films but with an actual plot that made sense across nationalities.

This women has a muti-personailty disorder in which she become her sister/aunt/stepmum/herself.

Also the nurse was having an afair with her father that is why he blames himself in which he say's (i'm a bad father.) Also she feels so guilty of her mothers death and sister. Like when the stepmum says (u will regret that someday) meaning she left her sister to die which if she was nicer to her on the stairs at the end she mostly would of saved her life. I am good at the mentally.

I find this movie to be incredibly depressing. I just cry now because I really feel for the main character. There are about 2 scary scenes in this movie that made me jump. One being the creepy onryo and the second...actually it also had to do with the creepy onryo.

Two sisters who, after spending time in a mental institution, return to the home of their father and cruel stepmother. Once there, in addition to dealing with their stepmother's obsessive and unbalanced ways, an interfering ghost also affects their recovery.

You'll discover that there's an actual confusing twist in the end if you watch it. I really recommend it! Amazing!!

The twist was that, all the events that happened when Su-Mi returned home were all in her mind. Her delusions made her believe that her sister was still alive and that they were living with their dad and step mother. But the truth is, her sister died and the stepmother was never there. She was playing her part all along.

The very end shows us how Su-Mi's sister died. And that's how she went crazy, blaming the stepmother.

It has many deleted scenes with commentary, alternative ending, making of the film. cast interviews, Psychiatrist perspective, and letter from Su Mi Also has the Director and cast commentary version of the film. So the Director explains what each scene is supposed to mean and why he chose to include certain things also the cast comment on certain things.

I suggest you check up this film at IMDB. There's an excellent post by a user called "opiemar". As far as I remember, the post title is something like "Explanation of a Masterpiece".

And then do re watch the film. It's amazingly beautiful.

I have just bought a 2 disc special edition.Includes nearly 2 hours of extras. Deleted scenes, behind the scenes, interviews with cast and crew, Directors commentary and more. When I get the chance to watch it it should give further insight into the story
