Notice how they fail to even mention the BRAND of engine this car has. They can't put their bloated ameri-yankee egos aside and admit the gem of this car is under the hood, and built in Japan. hahahhahah!!
The 1990 STS also has a 4.9L V8 with only 200hp, a soft ass suspension, and was only available with an automatic transmission.........so yeah great choice *rolls eyes*
Ive owned a coupla shos myself if you look up the simple bolt ons available for a sho they equal around 50-60 horsepower so a sho can reach close to 300 horsepower like they were originally designed to but never did cause of the mustang gt being the flagship model at the time!
What single non-FI bolton is going to add that much power? Or do you mean if you bought every non-FI bolton made for the SHO? If you mean the second one I can believe that. I don't believe they neutered it to not take out the Mustang GT though... I think simple cost, noise, fuel economy, and emissions requirements dictated what sort of parts and tune were acceptable.
89's were probably the fastest 0-60 due to the fact they were the first yr and air bags werent standard issue at the time. so minus the weight of that and coupled with the standard tranny they are the fastest sho's out there. Around 6-6-6 secs is what ive read in the reviews!
Yamaha purposely tamped down the power; this engine can easily rev to 8-9000 rpms, but the alternator could not handle that. Also, Americans like their torque, so this was a good balance. I tore one apart for an auto tech class, and the tolerance specs and the engineering into this engine is remarkable. One of the best ideas Ford had in the 1980's, along with the Taurus, and I do not even care for Ford!
You are right about the horsepower. But the new SHO weighs upwards of 4000 lbs... while this one weighs much less.
Many automotive sources claim that the original SHO is the best in terms of driving satisfaction - on par with the late-80's BMW 5-Series for much less money.
The new 2010 SHO you refer to is a bit softer; the suspension allows for a bit more lean for comfort, for the daily driver who wants a bit of spark.
dude my uncle had a 1991 taurus with 20 inch wheels custom paint job and sound system the other day i heard he flipped it then it started on fire when they were towing it to the junk yard
Double post, but I just got to the very last quote.
"one more example of Ford Motor Companies engineering excellence"
bwahahha. Ford didn't touch that V6, not even the intake manifold, that's ALL yamaha.
I'm not surprised to know that everything stamped "Ford" on these cars break, but anything Yamaha doesn't. 248K on my engine, still running strong, the rest how ever...typical Ford.
please keep your sho stock and clean so all can enjoy and a wagon sho would be cool maby ford can put the 90s sho back in production if they have spare money that would be the first time a car copany put a old car back in to production.
The last clip with the black '89 SHO and the race car driver was all taken from the "1989 Taurus SHO Introduction" videotape and reused by Ford in this 1990 video. In that tape he goes: "There is also an A/C cut-off which activates in a wide-open throttle condition. Just one more example of Ford's automotive engineering excellence"
So it looks like for this 1990 video Ford edited what he said to make it look like he was taking about the intake, instead of the A/C cut-off
my dad owned 3 taurus SHO"s and they were a 93,96,97 model years and they were all great beause the 93 had a large v6 and the 96 and 97 had a small v8 but very powerful mide size cars
I heard when the sho was first developed. The motor was pushing over 300 hp from yamaha. And ford said... Oh no! it can't be faster than the mustang gt, so they knocked it down to 220 hp. I stiil kick myself for selling my sho.
i read the same thing somewhere as well.... its probably true another guy says yamaha detuned it and it couldve revved up to 8-9000 rpm so do the math?!
That guy slammed the door on the white one. If anybody ever slams my doors, I simply shout "don't SLAM muh doors!" All of the SHO's I've had don't take much to shut the friggin' doors. I guess he was still used to ford cars having granite slabs for doors back in the day. Excellent upload!

no you could get a 5 speed in all the first and second Gen SHO's. 89-95 It was the 3rd Gen V8 which did not offer a manual. 96-99

What are the 0-60 times for the first and second gen? I hear 6.6 for Gen1 and around 6.9-7.3 for Gen 2? is that about right?

6.0-6.6 secs is what the 89 model year is capable of because its mated to the 5 spd and also because there is no abs on that yr only!

yes. the motor was more powerful for gen 2 but so much heavier it was slower.

It's funny how in 1989, Yamaha makes an engine that is a 3.0L that makes more HP than the 3.8L V6 in Ford's 2004 mustang.
Pretty damn pathetic.
GT5005 2 years ago 22
yea i no right?
wtf lol
patrickpl94 2 years ago
If that's the same 3.8 I'm familiar with, then it's a MUCH simpler and cheaper engine than this Yamaha 3.0 would be. No surprise it's slower.
hp/Liter is a pointless metric IMO.
What matters is the tradeoff between performance, reliability, efficiency, and cost.
Simple engines tend to be reliable and cheap, but not as fast or efficient. Nothing wrong with designing an engine that way.
