if any modern band played this it would sound like shit. the stones got chuck berry. not as good as his version but a great cover. actually worthwhile
Typical load of boring comments from boring people about boring things that no-one gives a shit about anymore. I can't believe you are still debating the merits of The Stones v. The Beatles 40 years on. Get a life!
@RollingOrmond Well, so what?? The Beatles were a million selling band at time they recorded "Roll over Beethoven" and wrote their own songs. The Stones were nothing but a cover band doing other peoples music. The Stones were good, but the Beatles were great. John and Paul and even George wrote timeless classics that will live on forever. They outsold The Stones 5-6 times. Even Paul McCartney had more no.1 hits on his own than the Stones had through their whole career! Long live the Beatles!
@Yellyist The Beatles wrote generic kiddie music for whitebread audiences. The blues the Stones based their music on wasn't #1 selling family-friendly product, it was supposed to be truthful about life, and the Stones ended up chronicling the real 60's of assasination and strife while the Beatles were locked in their ivory tower offering phony wishes like 'It's gonna be alright" and "count me out." Perfect for the whitebread suburbs, but tell that to the burning villages of Vietnam. Beatles BS.
@RollingOrmond Bullshit. You don`t have a clue about the beatles and their music at all. Is "Revolution" a kid song?? is "Helter skelter" a kid song? Forget about the blues. it`s shit. i hate the blues. i love pop and rock. And John Lennon wrote "Give peace a chance" and campaigned to end the war in Vietnam. He stuck his neck out, and was harrassed by the Nixon administration for his peace work. What the hell did Mick and the Stones do?? They dressed up like women and wore make up.
@Yellyist Yeah, yeah, the Beatles buried a couple hard songs on the White Album while the majority of their hits were Paul Sesame Street songs.John and Yoko just acted like they invented the peace movement to feed their endless need for attention with silly bed-ins and bullshit that did nothing to end the war. Narcissists. Political Campaigns like George McGovern did the actual work. And the Stones wrote about what was really happening in the world (Gimme Shelter) not escapist obladi horseshit.
@RollingOrmond The Beatles were working class boys from Liverpool, and they stayed working class. John wrote "working class hero" and many other songs to reflect that. The Beatles were real. Mick`s a phony.
@Yellyist John wrote that and "Imagine no posessions" from a mansion in the english countryside. Just a loud hypocrite. Mick never claimed to be working class, just an alternative to the Beatles cute bullshit. And his economics mind saved the Stones from Allen Klein, whereas the Beatles were too stupid about money to prevent Klein from breaking them up.
This is real early It was amazing how much recording capability changed in a couple of years back then. The Stones abilities and equipment improved almost in parallel
@hellterskelher Well, back in 1963 when this was recorded the Beatles were writing their own material, and were the biggest band in Europe. The Stones were just a fucking cover band. i like the Stones. I`ve even seen them live, but come on. They dressed up like women, wore makeup, and Mick danced like a fucking fag. Can you imagine John Lennon doing any of that??
I was stationed in memohis in 1978 I had hearsd thisd song by other artist but I have never heard the stones version.
My favorite stones Memphis song then was Honkey Tonk women. The other sailors got sick of me singing in the barricks," I met her gin sock ball room quueen from Memphis"
@frank02111 It's "gin-soaked barroom queen"....not "gin sok ballroom". Stones were really young here. Must've been a very early recording. They played it straigtht. Jagger hadn't developed his "swagger" and singing style yet. Still....it's hard to beat Chuck Berry doing this song. He did write it after all! I've heard the Stones cut or top Chucks' own versions of some of his songs, but this ain't one of'em. Of course they would've done it quite differently a few years later when a bit older.

@Yellyist Ignore this guy. He's just a bitter guy like Lennon in the later years, locked away with his ego.

The Beatles influence really shows through on this track. The last guitar chord at the end says it all.
Mick's singing style on this track is rare--a pure vocal with absolutely no affectations.
