  • im saving up for a c5 corvette ill be getting it around the end of next summer, do you have any websites that i can get good perfomance parts from?

  • I like everything you have done to your Vette. Very nice upgrades.

  • What were the two red buttons on the c5's steering wheel?

  • @Yfz450Rider1995 probably for Nos..or im guessing so...

  • @Yfz450Rider1995 the horn most likely

  • His car kinda looks like an 02 NSX from the front

  • aerodynamics at night ahahh goofy

  • Gosh damnit I want a C5 Z06 so damn bad

  • hey man sick vid my old mans got a 98 c5 nasa blue 450 hp

  • Did they really get rid of the leaf springs? Because the composite transverse leaf spring suspension is one of the most unique, and also one of the most functional parts of the Corvette. They have traditionally allowed for more storage volume than a comparable coil-spring setup and have an inherent anti-roll effect, which allows the use of lighter swaybars. Aside from the fact that it has "leaf spring" in the name, the technology is really totally different to the truck-style leaf setup.

  • U serious I just watched 12 minutes of shit expecting to see a race

  • I have an LS1 too!! but mines a stock Firebird so yours is waayyy better.

  • Never knew you had a vette Matt, nice. Your's is better, Fact.

  • How many miles were on your C5 when you bought it?

  • You guys have no idea how expensive these cars are here in Europe.

  • Your car is good and all but...i would still get a new z06...

  • Hey Matt is your Corvette a hard top ?

  • @mamomsedhi the top comes off

  • @mamomsedhi its a 'targa' top. The roof is the same material as the car and it just pops off, then you can chuck it into the boot. It doesn't fold down like a regular 'soft top'.

  • "abandoned the leaf spring suspension"? Really? Embarrassing for a car show... especially an American one whose host owns a 'vette! The C6 still has leaf springs.

  • Probably the best review I've ever seen. Really well put together. Quick question though, how many miles does your C5 have? I'm planning on buying one this coming October... Just kinda doing my research.

  • Dude would you mind sending me a message with your upgrades that is like the PERFECT C5.

  • Hey Matt, how many miles does your C5 have?

  • Great video

  • of course it feels like an adults car. More than half of the people that own the c6 are retired grandpa's with a deep pocket. The c5 to me is the tuner choice. Like the b5 s4 and the new b8 s4. But hell id take a c6 z06 any day! Matt what do your engine mods include besides exhaust? I'm considering getting a c5 z06

  • your corvette is siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick man nice sound :D

  • by da way da car show is so fkin fake lame and stupid

stay wid da smokin tire dude

  • I went with a 4th gen Trans am :) ls1 same as your vette, picked it up for under 6K :P plans are a Procarger set up ~550 rwhp DD. till the ls1 goes boom then an lq9 or 383 ls1 will take its place.

  • so by "exhaust tuning" do you mean like strait piping your cats? or actually replacing you exhaust? or both?

  • @ken0is0gay0fan0club I have a full header-back exhaust. Kooks long tube headers, a trick flow cat-less x-pipe, and a GHL race exhaust.

  • His Pratt&Miller C6RS video's great, sounds like the Corvette from hell, you gotta check that out!

  • Man I'm a firefighter/emt wish I could imagine affording one lol

  • This is such a good example of budget performance done right. Matt, great job! I would probably pick a C5 Z06 as my starting platform, for obvious reasons, but you're right the removable top has its appeal, especially being used to a Miata, and you NEVER see Corvette drivers with the top off! Would be really badass to do the same mods to a base C6 if one had more money.

  • Matt,

Do you remember which steering wheel that is? Im looking to replace mine, and like the fact that yours doesn't seem to be an all out race wheel.

    Thanks if you do.

  • @herpnut It's a Sparco, I can't remember which model specifically.

  • how much hp does your car make?

  • @driftkidd94 421 at the wheels.

  • @TheSmokingTire

how much do you spend on your corvette annually including gas, maintenance, taxes etc.?

  • @TheSmokingTire wat engine mods do u have?

  • @TheSmokingTire So you still running the LS1 motor? Are you heads/cam, etc..... to make 421rwhp?

  • The 2012 corvette GS is not 70k.. He must have look at the first price that popped up on google.

I can give you links to over 50 new 2012 GS for under 50k..

  • @silverdragon9388 No, I was looking at the window sticker of our test vehicle, which was $69,495.

  • @TheSmokingTire

Why do show/blogs always take the higher number? If the car's msrp is $69,495 but sells for 45-60k everywhere, the show will tell you that the car is 70k. On the other hand, if the msrp is $132,000 but the car sells for 140k, the show tells you the price is over 140k. Why the difference? Does it make them feel better to think their driving a “more” expensive car?

Sorry Matt, I don't mean to be an arse. I love your show! It's just a pet peeve of mine.

  • @TheSmokingTire There's a brand new Corvette GS at a dealer ship for $55,495 whats wrong with the prices where your at.

  • @silverdragon9388 Haha that shut you up

  • @shadowranger16

What shut me up? I wrote back the same day.. Lol.. You might want to reads things before you post

  • Do you take your car out in the winter or stick with the raptor. I am asking cause I take my bike out in the winter, even when there is still snow on the roads.

  • @SickK8GSXR600 Of course I do, but I live in LA, so there's no snow.

  • how many cars do you own?

  • how much was is to do all that to your vette?

  • @SMGMP7A1 around $30k retail plus the car.

  • do you ever wish you had waited for a c6? you've got a great build there Im just worried about buying a c5 because Im poor and wishing I had saved for a c6. so pretty those cars

  • @BlueAvenue22 I just had a ZR1 in the driveway for a week (video coming soon), and myself and the whole TST staff agreed my Corvette is more fun to drive than the ZR1, so no.

  • @TheSmokingTire Why do you say that? 500whp and brakes off an enzo doesn't sound like a bad mix to me!

  • @TheSmokingTire more fun than a zr1? your car is great! but i just dont see it...even if the zr1 is made of plastic haha

  • @1person89 When you do a car right, like his, it's entirely possible for a lesser Corvette to be better than a ZR1. The ZR1 is softer and looser than Matt's car just by the fact that it's still a factory spec car that has to be comfortable for a broad range of people. Many people think the stock Z06 is a better Corvette than the ZR1, so there you go.

  • @turbo311 well many people that say that have probably never driven a zr1 or a z06 for that matter...

  • @1person89 Don't remember which magazine I read it in, Car and Driver, Motor Trend, maybe even GRM, but it was an opinion shared by several automotive journalists. The Z06 can use its power better than the ZR1 on a track. 620hp is a lot for any rwd car that doesn't have significant downforce, especially with the roots-type supercharger adding to the problem with instant torque in corners. With the right mods the ZR1 would be a lot more track capable.

  • @TheSmokingTire I love your show; however, on your replys to people's comments, you do not say why you like something better, or something is not good. Not a big problem, but please explain your opinions. I am reffering to you saying your corvette is more fun to drive than the zr1.

  • @TheSmokingTire You should have done a comparison of your car vs. the ZR1 =D

  • haha is it me but 2:07 just watch, does he scrape it?

  • take your 'vette to sema and go to gtplanet.net and click Get your car in gran turismo via the 2011 GT awards click official entry form and fill out the information, I want to see your car in a gran turismo game

  • @SSC3034 My car will be at SEMA this year in the Optima Batteries Corral

  • @TheSmokingTire

I like your show, I normally think American car shows are crap, but your show is quite good. I have watched a few now and have been impressed. Keep up the good work.

    Pete from England

  • The rear brakes are smaller so why have bigger rear wheels?

  • @lfsracer79 traction, In a high horsepower car you usually want bigger tires on the wheels that drive the car.

  • @SMGMP7A1 I mean the diameter of the wheel, not the width.

  • @lfsracer79 The Corvette comes with a factory staggered stance. My car came with 17's and 18's. A new Corvette like the Grand Sport comes with 19's and 20's. So when I got new wheels for my car, I went with the modern size. Plus, it's not about the diameter of the rear discs as much as it is about the width of the caliper. My wheels, big as they are, only clear the rear brake caliper by about 1.5 mm

  • i own one, the body roll is bad cuz u got the top off. i notice a huge different with the top on

  • Is it weird that i google maped matts house?

  • @JULESRULES9969 no, but it's a damn good thing I don't live there anymore.

  • your c5 is awesome. nice car bro

  • sorry those headlights are ugly as hell

  • say matt. thanks for this vid. you are correct in every point here. now i dont wanna trade my 07 gt500 for a new one.

  • love you vett but why the hell you put thoughs ugly ass fixed head lights on your c5....brtter airo dynamics?.....come on, .night race much?

  • @35823582 better aero, brighter bulbs, and yes, high speed night driving.

  • nevermind lol i didnt watch long enough at first

  • what engine do you have matt?and how much power and torque?

  • NO hate but youve got a raging boner with this george guy

  • Grand sport is way better with the 420 hp and that's jest stock

  • or you could go and buy a 03-04 cobra

  • just watched this for the first time - i'm considering going the way of a used c5/c6 for my weekend / track car but it means i'd have to give up my 2002 M3 which is great but reading up on the vettes and hearing you talk about them makes me wanna go american muscle haha. excellent video - time to watch more of ur videos...i really like your approach and objectivity.

  • i like C6. it has a new look, it has a furious sound, and, it is for the new generations....like myself. they wanted this car to be in the wet dreams of teens. they want this car to be a goal in the new generations life. like the C4, thats for the baby boomers. C5 is for true 90s kids growing up in the 90s. thats what they are aiming with the C6. the next gen of drivers.

  • Love the C6, but I grew up on the C5

  • what do you think would be the the most important upgrades to a c5 for guy with a budget of around 2 grand? all so it's great to see you got you're well deserved place on a tv show i watch the car show every week mostly be'cus you're on it and i like to see you're opinion on new cars. you should try and get you're vette on the show. / i still think you shoulda been on top gear u.s.a

  • @THEARMEDLIFE

    Long Tube Headers

Intake (I have a used Vararam complete kit for sale...)

Ported Throttle Body ( I have one for sale as well...)

Let me know if your interested.

  • @6:56 you can see matt's raptor. Beast truck :)

  • you should be on top gear america since adam isn't a good driver

  • urs is a 98? its sick

  • yo Matt, the smoking tire is pretty good! great channel

  • I lìke his car,but i like the Grand Sport better,i hate the seats in his car everything else i could live with on his C5,and i love cars with monster exhaust sports cars supposed to sound threatning

  • Gm did a way better job. trust me. those rims, seats and expecially those headlights are fugly as hell.

  • If the fixed headlights didnt bulge out I would like them better

  • can you get those white rare stripes off?

  • @manoftim I think they are kinda tacky myself

  • @manoftim the white stripes come on all grand sports i believe, but not on any of the other models

  • @manoftim they are an option, you can order a GS without them.

  • I hate the fixed headlights...

  • If the Corvette interior and seats didn't suck, then maybe the Corvette will get in my top ten favorites. Even though it's been in my top ten least favorites. :)

  • were can i find a c5 corvette like urs

  • man that exhaust sounds sick. i have an '01 c5 that we put a lot of upgrades into. we put in a K&N cold air intake, carbon air filter, Borla ATAK exhaust( that's the loudest borla makes i think ) and a brand new exhaust manifold and a new LS1 head. it sounds like a monster

  • No offense man, but your ego is really showing.

yes you did good....since there is always something faster....i like your approach.

you remind me of me.......and that makes me dislike you.

but you did real good......you addressed all the c5 shortcomings

i call the stock flip up lights ...airbrakes...

the grand sport can be had for 60k good luck finding a zo6 for that .

    i am a c6 zo6 owner bolton.can you say it fly's

i now have 3 low to mid 11 cars.

    wana sell?

  • personally i like the dual mode or the corsa xtreme exhaust, i dont like the obnoxious loud in ur corvette

  • i like the look of yurs compared to the stock

  • Corvette just spanked everyone and there moms at Le Mans. Lol Ferrari, Aston Martin, Porcshe and Bmw all got bitch slaped

  • fixed the "poor aerodynamics" LOL those headlights look TERRIBLE smh

  • @robbyd831 it's not how they look. There's a reason why the LeMans Corvettes have these headlights. It's because they work. Driving a Corvette with pop-ups quickly at night is terrifying because of the lift those lights cause.

  • i love how mat destroys everyone with responses. he seems like a great guy ! even destroyed me a while back when i asked him to do a segment on saabs. i like how he aint no pussy.

  • Matt... What is so bad about the seats???

  • @supercoupe86 Corvette seats are comfy but the leather is cheap and wears out quickly, and they don't have all that much side bolstering. I prefer the tighter leather of the european/Recaro style seats. But I also really like the Sparco's which are surprisingly comfortable.

  • Matt..... Do you know if it's possible / any company that would cut the top, and turn a Z06 into a removable Top? Thanks For Your Time & Consideration.

  • @MFraze14 I wouldn't do it. The Z06 has a fixed roof in order to keep the chassis rigid with that much torque. I'm sure you could find a body shop to do it for you, but I would probably advise against it.

  • @TheSmokingTire Thanks, I Appreciate The Insight. I Love Vette's, But On The Other Hand I'm About As Handy As A Pencil With Broken Lead. Love Your Video's, Keep It up.

  • hey matt what other cars do you have?

  • great video

  • Yo Matt, what was that black Vette with the yellow stripes at the end of the video? Im almost positive I saw it in Hollywood a few days ago. It was night time so I cant be 100% sure, thanks...

  • @HandyAndy229 could be, it was a breathed-on ZO6

  • 2:07

Road is pretty smooth but even so car scrapes the road >:0|

  • Corvettes are not the best sports car to buy they are always having problems like all gm cars and you have to dump tons of money in them to keep them going

  • @bsl3216 I've owned my Corvette for 13 years. Bought it brand spanking new from the dealership in 1998. Other than a dead battery in 2004, the result of the car sitting for too long, not a single thing on my Corvette has ever broken. Not a window switch, nor a drivetrain component, nothing.

  • @TheSmokingTire How many miles are on it?

You didn't have the EBCM Failure?

Cracked rims? (well you changed out the wagon wheels)

    Column lock?

    Leaking rear diff

Broken headlight gears ( you switched those out)

    HVAC display going dim.

Etc etc They are fairly reliable cars but they are not a corolla. I have had plenty of issues on mine and I am only at 50k miles on my 2002 C5.

  • @maxmk8 Nope, sorry, I haven't had any of those problems. I changed the rims to fit the larger brakes. I switched out the headlights while they were still working, and I've never had any of those other problems.

  • @TheSmokingTire At first when I saw your car in other videos before, I thought it was a Z06 since it was modded, I couldn't tell it was just a C5. I bet if you did all those upgrades to a C5 Z06, It would be hell of a lot faster, maybe even then a new C6 or even C6 Z06.

  • @Coolio56ification yeah, but I bought my car before the C5 Z06 came out, and if I had the Z06, I wouldn't be able to take the roof off, which I love.

  • @TheSmokingTire

can i ask how much money you spend on the vette anually? gas, maintenance and all that stuff?

  • @bsl3216 while they do have some typical GM-isms, such as the cheap interior, i have not had any major problems with my C5. Aside from gas and regular maintenance, I have had to dump exactly $0 to keep mine going and i am not easy on it. Overall, they are very reliable sports cars and terrific performers right out of the box. Sure, the newer ones are faster, but you can easily find nice C5s now for 14-15k.

  • if i were to own a c5 this is how i would want it to be

  • your vette is nice im sure its really fast in straight line but that car was never built for handling so if you are saying thats your canyon car then you are missing alot.

  • @bbyevoviii If you think Corvettes aren't built to handle, you're the one missing a lot. Corvettes handle very well from the factory, but mine was old and I wanted to improve on it, which is why I did the full coilover suspension and big swaybars with the chassis stiffening half-cage. I can now sustain over 1g lateral acceleration in my car, which is on par with modern supercars. It corners flat and fast, and is very predictable on corner entry as well as exit.

  • @TheSmokingTire Nice ride man. I really enjoyed that. I have an 09' C6 and I am probably going to start modding it a bit soon and using it less too. I'd like to go with a coil over kit myself, but haven't looked at too many yet. I always see Pdaft. I don't know where all these folks get this "only in a straight line" nonsense from with Corvettes. Anyway, enjoy it man!

  • @TheSmokingTire is that low stance able to support any bumps??i had a stiff lowered car and sometimes if im braking hard and if theres a bumb my car will bounce a little and come an inch of the ground.but it handled like a beast. Can ur ls1 vette take out a c5 z06??btw c5 looks better than c6

  • @bbyevoviii ahahaha this isnt the 1970s or 1980s anymore retard.I love how people cant use the old "american cars are only fast in a straight line" stereotype.American car companies have proved for the past 10-20 years that they can make an all around sports car that is as good or better than most in the world.

  • Ok ST,I have a question,Ive got a 1997 Trans Am with the old useless LT1 (sarcasm intended haha) ,and honestly,I love it.Stock, its not bad,but I want to modify it,and as much as I can picture it just how I want it,do you think it would even be worth putting alot of money into? I mean I know on any car you never make the money back you put into it,but do you think given its old engine design, solid rear suspension, and and generally being "outdated",it could still be competitive with new cars?

  • @rockerdude29 not unless you dumped a gigantic mountain of cash into it. Unless you plan on keeping the car forever, don't bother.

  • I just brought 2011 gs because of Matt. Thank you!!!!

  • Matt you keep saying you're not a big rim kind of guy, but you obviously are.

  • @jimman1209 It's more important to ask WHY I have large wheels on my Corvette. I will only change the wheels if it improves the performance of my vehicle, not detracts from it like most normal big rims. When I upgraded my brakes to the much larger Stoptech units, the stock wheels wouldn't fit over the 6-piston calipers. So i found someone to make me a custom set that won't only fit the calipers, they would be lighter than stock with a bigger footprint for more grip. Lighter + More grip = win.

  • where did you get the brackets to mount the aftermarket seats into the car

  • Is the Zr1 real carbon fibre or fake? I would really love to know if it's plastic or real carbon fiber thanks!

  • @bugattiveyronsslover The ZR1 has real carbon fiber.

  • @TheSmokingTire Thanks always heard rumors about that circulating, awesome to know now!

  • @TheSmokingTire If the Grand Sport doesn't have leaf springs, what does it have?

  • @suntannedmedal it uses magnets (jk, matt farrah is just dumb)

  • That c5 sounded like the trans am in smokey and the bandit! Sweet!

  • how's the clutch in that car?

  • @TheItalianPerson modern corvette clutches have a moderate throw effort and very good feel. same goes for the Cadillac CTS-V.

  • He must have used soooo much gas making this video lol

  • Ah, the Corvette. Wish I had the know how to mod a C5 myself at home or I would have done it a long time ago. Best regards from South Texas.

  • Great video! I'm learning a lot about corvettes and making my mind about the model I want to buy to replace my Z4 M Coupe.

By the way any chance to review the superformance GM authorized corvette grandsport??

    Best regards from Brazil!

  • matt, can i just say that i fucking LOVEEEE your corvette!!!

  • How much do you have invested in your personal 'Vette by comparison to the new one? I like 'em both. They both 'Vettes.

  • @crusTodd I've put nearly $30k into mine on top of the original MSRP

  • Im going to buy a C5 Corvette and im shopping for exhaust kits. I've seen Corsa, Borla, Flowmasters, all that jazz. When I heard the exhaust note for the C5 in this video, I just about cried! I HAVE to know what exhaust set up you have.

    Thanks,

    -Kyle

  • @BigKyleTX Kyle i think he has borla with track x pipe (no cats) Corsa sounds abit more raspy, racy, where as, Borla sounds abit more bold and thunder like(i know sounds stupid lol) Also if you get headers any type of exhaust sounds fantastic, just to keep in mind

  • really solid build, great example of the C5 potential. Im thinking of getting a C5 when I get out of the navy so I have a few questions if you dont mind. what kind of mods did you do? I'm guessing it's NA, maybe full bolt-ons and cammed? how did your powertrain mods effect MPG? are the pedals good for heel and toe and did you ever have tranny issues? I heard the tranny was weak. thanks bro

  • @BlueAvenue22 No tranny or clutch issues, the pedals are perfect for heel/toe driving. I did every bolt on you can do without a full rebuild or going forced induction, list them off in the video. MPG is still very good on the highway at cruising speeds.

  • tuned ftw

  • sorry, i lost track when i saw that mustang at 3:04

  • Do you do your own work on your car Matt? or do you find it better to pay a little extra and have professionals work on it?

  • @dcengland I do my own MAINTENANCE but not my own WORK. I leave that to the pro's.

  • can you do a comparison from a c6 z06 to the grandsport?

  • Good comparison and a lot of great info. I love seeing you open those American heros up on a windy road. From an Aussie who use to live in the L.A area, it's great to sit back and check out the scenery again and dream about owning on e of those beauties. You guys wouldn't believe what we have to pay for them here. Thanks for the vid!

  • @pete9047 We pay alot for them in Turkey too, I paid 50grand for my c6 when new in Boston, got it shipped and paid another 40grand for customs in Turkey :((

  • Im saving up about 5 grand, and gonna sell my z28 to get a 97 corvette. Ive already got about 2 grand saved. oh and im 15.

  • the C5 had some ugly ass headlights. looks like an old nissan

  • Damn, that 2011 exhaust was supersweeet^^

  • I am thinking on selling my 04 mustang gt and get myself a c5 z06 or a an 04 cobra but i also feel like buying a 2005 saleen s281 just because I love the way it looks.

  • 2:14 "[the grand sport] has abandoned the leaf springs." false. "Matt Farah is a dumbass." true.

  • no wonder i loved the sound of that c5 its a ls1 didnt know that.
