I met Barry McQuire in 1976 down in the little tiny Santa Ana TV studio where TBN started out. He still had the long hair, tie-dyed shirts, sandals, etc. Terry Talbot... what an amazing song writer. Sad that he basically disappeared when the 80s came around.
The turnout for the 40th anniversary of Monterey was not all that great, but it was fun. Barry still tours in Europe, Australia and New Zealand every year plus his US shows, his audience still loves him and his stories.
I can remember the first time I heard this great song at the radio and the single in the music shop display. Now I feel a bit uncomfortable seeing Barry singing for a such lttle audience.
But almost totally irrelevant when the original version (and far better IMHO) was by the actual writer of the song - P.F. Sloan who also wrote and recorded "Sins of a Family".
This song was his best hit (maybe his only) At the time it was first out it was bannded BUT still it made it to TOP 1 like wtf and now hes alot older still 20 lol but still the song was top 1 even tho it was bannded becuse of how it is talking bad about what the goverment was doing so at that time it was a great hit NOW OM SHUTING UP AGAIN SO OK GOOD!!!!!!
I bought this single as soon as it came out and its message is just as valid today. Great to see BMcG still going strong. Five Stars, and a Favourite!
Btw (and finally) before anyone else goes off on me..i consider this one of the best popular written songs of all time..i also believe that poor Barry had to carry on the weight and persona of the words of this song and it sadly shows it
"Poor" Barry didn't have to carry the weight of anything. He's still sounding great!! Everyone should sound that good and have that much energy in their 70's!
How nice to see Barry sounding so great and powerful. His old friends, The Association, are on tour this summer as well. Both wonderful groups from the 60's, having Larry Ramos with them added a lot of class and soul! ROCK ON, GUYS! John & Teri.
No matter what oldies concert u go too, theres always those 4 to 10 people in the audience trying to live the past..how sad when today is SO MUCH better, the day we're living in is the best :) hugs, Jenni
LMAO - some of us may be ALOT older then you think, but young in heart where we dont make asses of ourselves and try to re-live past days when today is just as good as any day from my past - but your comment is "Typical" of those that cannot get their head out of their....past :) hope your life is going better then the comment you made :)
I love how he changed the lyrics to include the Taliban and Al Qaeda. Just goes to show you that this song has and will always be relevant unless we do something about it.
It is so great to see Barry with Terry Talbot. Anyone familiar with Talbot's work in Mason Proffit knows how great a performer and writer he is. I read the other day that in October of 2008, Barry McGuire, Terry Talbot and Roger McGuinn (the Byrds) will be touring together. Hope they cut a CD!!! Can't wait!
This song will live on...............

The best protest song ever - someone's loaded up a version of this sung by Maguire aged 74 ... it's good too.
Sabatinitennis 2 years ago 3
Compare this to today's pathetic music. A legend.

If you want to hear an old protest song from the 60's, that is still very relavant today, watch Steppenwolf's Monster 2008 on Utube. Peace

This verson is absolutely relevant to the hear and now. Just like the original was to
integeration in 1965.
The version I really like though is the one he
does with Don and Wendy Francisco in 2004. It
is also on You Tube. It's great.

But since P.F.Sloan visited Barry last year to hear him perform with John York and approved of his version, your comment is irrelevant.....

Those Talbot's are just massive talents. I still keep my Mason Profitt albums close to the turntable for easy access. Barry is no slacker either.

God damn the protest songs of today are so weak and crappy compared to the great ones like this.

Barry is awesome. The only person that can sum it all up in a song. Any politicians paying attention? ... I didn't think so.
