Interesting take. I kind of agree with others who have posted, the push and pull, well pushed and pulled a bit too much. Was hard to get a sense of the text. Some of the pauses were a bit too grand. A comma is just a comma, no need to stop for 3 seconds of silence. A pretty nice recording over all though.
@CaitlinIntolerant Agreed, he took liberties. Like them or not, he took them. And, I should clarify, I'm not knocking his interpretation, or what his choir did. But, I don't like it as much as I do other versions.
I actually really like the phrasing. It breaks it up, but also puts an interesting spin on the song. I think it's different in a good way. Their extravagant tone quality fits with the extravagant phrasing.
Seriously.....the 10,000 or so POINTLESS and LONGER-THAN-NECESSARY rests PISSED ME OFF......I understand that every director has the discretion of arranging the music how he.she pleases BUT DAMN...... it takes away from the fluidity of the song.....
that was so bone chilling!!! I loved it =) this really brings me back to my days back in jazz choir in high school... granted, this isn't a jazz piece, we still sung it with our combined choirs... good times. Music is so powerful. GO TENORS!!! =)
I'm gonna have to go ahead and agree with the consensus here and say that although the tuning is great and the choir sounds beautiful, I'm not a fan of the phrasing. At all. Nice job otherwise though.
It is nicely in tune unlike some other versions 'ive heard hear. It is way over the top too indulgent -- the conductor - got a little to carried away. Also a false entrance at the beginning of the last section -- somebody else must have got distracted.
BEAUTIFUL!! The levels you guys create with your voices is heavenly (no pun intended). And you guys made pauses that had such a gorgeous silence to them. Oh God, I could go on and on about this forever!! I've sang this song so many times and its such a huge part of me but you guys did it justice. Kudos!
We are singing this song in my high school chorus class and this has got to be one of the most beautifully written choral songs that have been written in the choral world. Your vowels were great throughout the song. One concern though, when you guys sung "If you should comfort me", the comfort sounded like com-fert. If you sing this song again in the future, you should say com-fort instead. It sounds cleaner.
the feeling of the song is missing, just because the conductor rearranged the song. by the middle of the song i started losing interest. the tona quality is good though!
i dont like the way the director separated the beautiful lines of this song, and there is absolutely no dynamics or tempo changes in the right places. its all the same tempo, but should be slow in certain places and sped up in others to truly represent such a lovely and well written song.
That's the beautiful thing about music. Interpretations can be differing and it can still be credible. Maybe the motivation for singing it was different yours. You have to admit their tone is amazing and their vowel shake is ridiculous. The pausing adds emphasis which is pleasing to their song. You want to know what the next words are.
this song is beautiful... but I think the director missed the artistic interpretation through the dynamic difference. and the tempos should have been adjusted while the choir is singing, rather then in dead space
I liked this song when we sang it. Its REALLY hard to do believe it or not (i sang the tenor line). Yes, for the most part its the same note. And its in my lower range. Put those two together with the crecendos and decrecendos that were supposed to be added...it's NOT easy.
As for this version...its supposed to flow! The pauses are too many and they abruptly stop the flow of music. It was SANG beautifully! But the abrupt pauses and the speeding and slowing of the phrases was just too much.
this song is meant for pure, smooth tone. I agree it has too much vibrato. The phrases are different, not necessarily bad. I felt the song dragged a little bit, but of course you don't want it to run away with you. Great job on responding to the director!
this is really beautiful! my choir is doing this right now but we're trying it straight tone. I actually prefer straight tone =] but this is really greatttt. beautiful blend!
I dont know what you dont like about the interpretation of this, but if you dont like all the cut offs and stuff you should know that we had just got back form a tour and we were singing at all these cathedrals with awesome acoustics so he was used to us doing it that way. If its something else then I am sorry we ruined this awesome song for you.
@choirnerd99 I know how much the space affects the phrasing. I kept imaging you in a space with lots of reverb. Wish I could have heard you on tour. You guys are great.
@choirnerd99 I really enjoy the pauses that he adds. Silence is just as important with music. It adds that extra bit of tension to this piece that I just love. Great job with an awesome song!
@choirnerd99 Oh, nice...well...I sung this song in the national cathedral. What did you do? "all these cathedrals and stuff"...it wasn't what it should have been, sorry. It's not a slight against the performers, you all did pretty well (outside of a few sopranos who couldn't blend and the standard issues with male voices)...but the tempo was off. Sorry.
Stumbled across this video doing research for Choir. Absolutely beautiful arrangement. I can't wait to perform it myself (:

Either there's a sound lag or the choir is off beat from conducting. Amazing sound though!!!

Sang this song with my All State group this year,
some of you may not like the cut offs and crescendos,
but I adore this song.
It is beautiful, and the "wraps me in song" part is like a huge warm musical hug, that's what my chorus teacher called it,
and it gives me goosebumps, it is so gorgeous.

The quirk of directing is not having to follow compositions to a T.
He took his own liberties, his own risks, and I think it's beautiful.
I don't CARE for it, but what he did, he did well.

He effectively covered a song, a failed.

Pretty tones and such but there is no feeling and there should be more flow between verses. The powerful words get lost in the chopiness

This director's interpretation of the piece is quite interesting. For a song that is so overdone, I truly enjoyed this performance!

He did ruin the phrases, But it beautiful none the less. However try to sing more of a line of music and not such direct crescendos and decrescendos.
