  • Aw, man! Why such a short video?? :(

  • would've liked it better if he played it on tenor honestly.

  • nice ! です.

  • turn it up! I can't hardly hear it.

  • thanks so much for putting these up sam

  • you guys are talking about ii V s... and really if you think about it. Even though when we write the music and dissect it, yes there is a lot of ii V ones... in the classical muscians eyes they don't see the in the ii or in that V that it's MANY keys not just a 2-5... that's the beauty of jazz.. a C major can be so many things.. it's just the start!

  • ugh..... just when u want these vids to keep going for 10 more mins.... it's over

  • Its good to know theory and apply it to your playing like i do and many other jazz players, but jazz is about be in the moment and if your thinking which key are you gonna modulate and all this theory, then your really not playing jazz, jazz comes from the heart

  • anyone know where i can download this gig?

  • es lo mas grande que hay

  • Yay for music nerdom. And for playing outside.

  • You can't argue with these musicians. They Know what they're doing.

  • JOSHUA REDMAN - BACK EAST. Live 2-disk is pretty good, old school Josh out of Berkeley California

  • damn dude, this guy kicks ass! any recomendations as far as his records?

  • Get the album this song is on, it's called "Elastic" it's so good! I would reccomend Momentum as well, but I really like when Brian Blade plays with Redman best.

  • i love the album beyond

  • fucking great, why does it end so fast?

  • interesting mic contraption

  • hahahaha

  • he wouldent make a mistake like being flat he probly ment to be flat i mean this guy is fucking amazing he knows what the hell is happening when he plays

  • Do U really think musician of this level will have technique struggle on his instrument!?Hi's playing slightly up tune when he gets too intense in the high points of development and it's sounds absolutely beautiful! this is exactly what you can found in spanish and oriental singing traditions with all their quartotones!

  • I must be going crazy. I think I can hear a bass along with the music :S. Great clip. I love his soprano sound. Anyone know what mp and ligature he's using?

  • Of course you do hear the bass. The keyboardist plays the notes on the keys with his left hand. It's a common "technique" in jazz groups (especially with a Hammond) without a real bass.

  • Home !! Coocking

  • I love those chords and the way he uses them to weave instant melodies,GREAT

  • Hes a better tenor player. Hes still good. A few of his notes are pretty flat.

  • It's hard to keep a soprano in tune in most registers anyways.

  • I've noticed his intonation is a bit out sometimes. That's my only reservation with his playing from time to time. He's absolutely smokin' on every other level though!

  • I think he intentionally plays out sometimes. It is a way of adding more tension in his playing just like in Hindustani music.

  • You can only play "Out" intentionally. If you're playing out unintentionally, you're fucking up.

  • what do you mean by playing out?

  • It's kind of hard to explain in terms that don't make me sound like a nerd.

  • Nerd away. I'm a nerd when it comes to music as well so I should know what your talking about.

  • Alright, well, I'm going to assume you know common changes. So when I say II-V, you know what I mean.

So, say you're blowing over a tune and you come to a dominant, and for the sake of this, it just resolves to Imaj7. We're going to be in the people's key of C. So, G7 (The V7 of I) is going to have a few possibilities for substitutions. The most common substitution being the Tritone. If you play a Db7 over that G7, the V7 is no longer V, but a subV7, which resolves by half-step, not a fifth.

  • I think you mean ii-V

  • It doesn't matter if it's lower case if it isn't classical analyzation. Analyzing modern tunes, the lower case becomes extraneous, since the chord quality is included. IImin7, for example.

But to answer your question, no. I did not, in fact, mean ii-V.

  • Not really. If you are referring to ii and you refer to it as II, that can confuse some people. And were you referring to a II as in II-V-I because it is correct as ii-V7-I. And plus a lot of books that have Roman numeral references go between upper- and lower case Roman numerals.

  • Then whatever, if it bothers you that much, just add some dots to my I's

  • Instead of a Tritone, you can also sub the V7(G in this case) with Eb7 and Bb7. All these are just built off the tension of the V7. Those are not the only substitutions... just the three most common.

Also, while playing over any chord, using the root as other parts of different chords is a good way to play out. For example, if playing in C (yes, again, haha) You can make C the third, fifth, seventh, ninth, eleventh, or thirteenth. So, if you were to make it the major third, you'd play an Abmaj7

  • Thanks for the lecture. Sorry I didn't see the above comment when I was asking about playing out so I didn't understand the context. I enjoyed hearing about other types of substitution also. Up until this point I only knew about tritone sub so It's good to add some stuff to my musical knowledge bank. Why is it though that you can sub the dominant with an Eb7 or Bb7 (of course if you can't be bothered explaining then that's cool. It is a bit laborious I can understand ;)?

  • Well, spell out the chords and you'll see why.

  • this is not a place to discuss abaout jazz theory,

this is place yo enjoy the music, so, go to your "schools", and burn your brain with things that we all know u.u,

  • Don't read comments! if it is place to enjoy the music

  • hes good on soprano but i much more prefer him on the tenor horn

  • man, you gotta keep putting the rest of this concert!!

  • I'm with you on that one man cause this trio's straight smokin!
