I always thought Ask was a very unappreciated horse for Sir Michael Stoute for often racing in the shadow of Conduit and Tartan Bearer. But Ask, IMO, was a class act. He was a 2-time G1 winner, winning this race and the Prix Royal-Oak in France. Winning a G1 was something that Tartan Bearer came close but never accomplished in his career.
Because he's lazy at times in his races, Duncan is tough to handicap. He's very quirky, yet at times, very talented. I think that Ask and Youmzain were probably the best horses in this race. If Duncan had ran as well here as he did in the Prix Foy? A run like that would've been good enough to win this race, IMO. Beating Nakayama Festa, Timos, Byword, Daryakana, and Chinchon was beating a tougher field than this, IMO. If the right Duncan had shown up here? This was a very winnable race for him.
How many races is that high head carriage of Youmzain's going to cost him? It cost him this race against Ask. I didn't think it was even possible that it cost him in another finish this close. But it cost him again at Longchamp in the 2010 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. The finish between Youmzain and Plumania in that race may have even been closer than the finish of this one between Youmzain and Ask.
Can't wait for the 2010 renewal between the 2009 winner, Ask, 2008 Oaks Winner, Sariska and Fame And Glory. I must not forget the other contenders as well.
@uhegbu, the 2010 Coronation Cup was a great race as well. Not as close of a finish as the race in 2009, but nevertheless, great. Fame and Glory is just looking like one of the dominant older colts for the year. Sariska ran him a very game 2nd, but she was never gonna get by him on that day. Cavalryman ended up 5th behind High Heeled and Youmzain. But I think had his run not been hampered by High Heeled on the outside, and badly by Youmzain on the inside, he finishes 4th for sure. Maybe 3rd?
I backed Ask because I wouldnt back Youmzain at 2 to 1 with stolen money. I also really like Ask for the King George at 16 to 1 .Could end up being great each way value
I knwo what u mean mate. Youmzain is been never good enough but i backed him at 25-1 in the Arc even though I thot Sea The Stars would win but quater of the odds gives me more money than backing Sea The Stars at 4-6. He must be the most unlucky horse in the world though.
i dont think youmzain is "brilliant", however he is an absolutley solid group 1 performer who has been beaten the minimum margin by top class horses, unlucky at times? not as unlucky as buccelatti here tho, followed buccelatti from the start of his career he has done nothin but improve, murtagh cut him up plain and simple ,he got a 5 day ban,he will miss 2 days of royal ascot, good.
i hope this myth that youmzain is a brilliant horse is now put to bed. everything panned out for him perfectly in what was hardly the strongest group 1 you will ever see yet the horse still could not win.
Totally agree. Hammered in last year's King George, well beaten in yesterday's Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud 3 lengths by little more than a good Group 3 horse. I think it's debatable whether Youmzain is Group 1 class at all.
exactly. people kept blaming the jockey for him getting beat bu the truth is youmzain just hasnt got it. the coronation cup and the group 1 in saint cloud were hardly red hot group 1s and he still couldnt win it. even soulimon admitted in as many words that the horse just hasnt got it.
Youmzain has cost me loads of money, always the brides maid and never the bride. Thank goodness I went for champion jockey ryan moore on ASK in this race!!!
