Don't be outright hating todays music. Whenever I hear "its not like the old days" I think of the parents in the 50's saying of Elvis "its not like the old days with Irving Berlin", move to parents the sixties of saying of Zeppelin and the Beatles "its not like the old days with Elvis", move to the 70's, 80's 90's and so forth. You get the picture. The moment you say "Music is not like the old days" is the day you refuse to have an open mind.
im 19 and i love the greatful dead, over any other band, the history, the warlocks, the acid test, woodstock!!, like damn they rocked all that shit, and by the way, my parents dont hate the music, but they dont love it, i found it on my own, and its mos deff my favourite band
Im 47 and followed the dead in college and after.. have seen over 54 shows and Ive turned on my 6 and 8 year olds to the dead. Its beautiful music and timeless. It beats the shit thats called popular music.. justin beeber... Id rather eat nails and drink motor oil!
My dad loves music, is not afraid of weed, and he didn't get the Dead and begin to like them until I forced him to go to some shows (Vegas in '92). They can be hard to get without being able to see them/the scene.
I was also 23 a year ago. My mom also does not like the Dead. She just doesn't know. Their music is so amazing. It touches the soul. Never being able to see them myself, I followed FURTHUR around last year...11 shows, everyone just as incredible as the last.
I'm a 24 year old Deadhead. My parents took me to a Dead concert when I was 7. It was Jerry's second to last show. It was badass. Still I wish I coulda been in my 20's back in the early 70's to see the Dead when they were really jammin'. I went to some Bob Weir & the Ratdogs and Phil Lesh & Friends concerts within the past few years. The Dead can still put on a hell of a show. I'd like to check out Dark Star Orchestra... I've only heard good things.
well ur 32 now, and i am also one of ur kind - a young deadhead, and feel a great deal of love for the enduring scene and people that make it up. God bless you all
I seen the alman brothers do this song or possibly "i know u rider", but they had an xtra verse they sang. If anyone knows the words to this other verse, could u tell me? i cant find it anywhere. maybe it was just something they sang at concerts? the dead sang 3 verses with this one, and 4 verses on "i know u rider", if u count the chorus.
some of what I read below sounds familer my dad thought he did not like the dead, one day riding in his car I put in a tape (sage & spirit )it turned out his favorite song was going down the road feeling bad !! all those years he had listened to it & thought it was some country band, he just didn't know.... A girl I grew up with would not listen to them because she that they were a metal band. She had them confused with Black Sabbath !!! She now has been set straight !
I'm 34, and growin up my dad didn't like the Dead "acid rock". I snuck a few Dead acoustic songs and some JGB on his Ipod a few months ago. The other day i was over at the house and he was jammin this tune super loud. When he realised i was there he looked at me and said, "WOW! I can't believe i didn't listen to this growing up. I didn't know they played music like this. He has since branched out to JGB, although 27 minuet Dark Star Jams are still a bit much for him...Music never stops!!
Anyone who hates the Dead simply hated the culture and didn't pay attention to the lyrics. For instance if they love Haggard, Robbins, Dylan, Holly, etc. then surely they can't hate the Dead because that was the pride of the Dead, they prided themselves in being the best band you could go to see who covered rock music and so much more.
GavinGT, sadly i think the majority of the American publc associate the GD with hippy dippy stoned out loser music for losers. You have to consider though that these uniformed lolly pop listening people are some of the 30 million tuning into American Idol weekly. Those people are mindless sheep. Any fan of music will find something in the GD's playing that will knock their socks off.
4.29.71 Has the best Dark Hollow ever....it's on Ladies and Gentlemen The Grateful Dead. Closing of the Fillmore East 4 day run they had. Jerry's backup vocals on the 71 Dark Hollow send shivers down a spine.
What a great version of this traditional bluegrass song. Jerry was into this kinda music before he formed the Grateful Dead. It never really left him. Check out "Old & In The Way" and the stuff he did with Dawg (mandolin player David Grisman). Great version.
@GavinGT oh she does give it a fair shake, she just loves it soooooooo much that it looks like she likes it for the drugs, but believe me brother, she loves and needs that music in her life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@GavinGT Hear ya!I introduced my Grandma's partner (so she's like gramma too) to them. Got in car, put in Amer. Beauty, n that was all it took! Box of Rain n Ripple made a 65 yr old turn into a 'Head. My bf digs em, n my 70 yr old Dad. only 1 I cant convert...14 yr old daughter...But I caught her singing words to Casey Jones, n dancing to Truckin...sooo. she likes em on the under...
@JennHowardAgent003 im 19 deadhead and the only blacksheep in my family they dont like me being a hippy and assume im doing drugs while they are fun.. being a hippy and a deadhead is a mindset ^_^

Well my friends, there is no age to enjoy the good of life.
I am celebrating this year my 20 years as a Dead Head. My life does not turn around the Dead's, i am not spreading the word any more.
But i still enjoy their music as much as the first day.
I never saw them in concert, but when i am listenning to their music, i just feel happy, very happy. And tht is the most important thing.
