I Love this version, I love Susan version, I lOve Lea's version, i love the Glee Version, this is just BEAUTIFUL song through and through and they have all done it justice in my oppinion
@watt1896 Duh! Sutton Foster is the most overrated actress in the world! Have you seen her videos? Her squeaky voice and hammy acting are all over the place! Only YOU, "walt1896" and your 1,000 other usernames, want to be the only one posting in the comments section of Sutton's videos and you mark as SPAM every comment from other people. You are such a troll and I'm sure you're just as ugly as your overrated idol! Ruthie is sooooo much better!
Love how all the acting came out in her voice! I'm still a Lea Salonga fan but now i'm also a Ruthie Henshall fan! No need to go hatin'...it's the diversities in interpretation that makes the art experience oh so much richer.
IS anyone else getting an Ad for a war based video game? I wonder if the advertising people know what they are doing.....LEs mis and Modern Warfare? lol
I've seen this show 14 times on broadway and twice on tour. I own every studio recording. I know every word and every note of this musical. This is without a doubt the most incredible performance I've heard! In fact, I considered this song over-rated until Ruthie proved me wrong. This performance sends chills through my body. If you believe this is "emotionless", you clearly don't understand the character and can't hear the subtle intonations used to conveyed her despair.
Ruthie Henshall is best in Fantine role because of her voice which is deep and strong so it's best reminiscent of despair, which is Fantine - is a prostitute, she lost everything, even hope.. :] Others do not match this.
I have to disagree, i could never call this amateurish i adore it and it makes me cry without fail everytime there is a lot more to singing a song such as this than hitting every note perfectly, Lea is of course wonderful but i find her rendition to be detached whereas when i watch Ruthie i am watching Fantine and feel every ounce of her pain...breath taking :D xx
I actually love this even more than Lea Salonga's...so touching! I own the dream cast version, and to me she will always be Fantine :) not that I dislike Lea's rendition
good performance but if you watch now Lea Salonga version, this performance will make you rate this as amateurish... that's how outstanding Lea's performance is
@rakiroad69 ..."amateurish"?? I wouldn't go down that far. Ruthie's interpretation is excellent, so is Lea's...it is all a matter of preference between the two, but to criticize either one with their delivery of the song is just low, simply because both are outstanding Fantines
i must say , this version talks to my heart the most . The way she doesnt just sing , but talks the song and changes her mood according to the song. if she's either gentle or harsh , i'ts just so beautiful <3
I think her voice expresses what this song really conveys. Listen to the change of timbre with the meaning of the sentence. For example, BUT HE WAS GONE WHEN AUTUMN CAME.
This is the very best rendition of this song. The vocal control, range, tone, subtleties, expression all power Ruthie's version to be a masterpiece. She is not overly dramatic like some top singers. In visual performance less is better.
I don't know why but Ruthie Henshall's version is the best for me. Some may say that she doesn't have the best vocals or that this is a rather lifeless version of the song, but for me, it touches me. It's perfect for me.
Why on earth are so many people hating on this performance? I think Ruthie is wonderful. Her voice has such a unique, pleasant tone. That, plus I love the way she portrays Fantine's character. Mournful and reflective, with just the slightest traces of hope. I saw the 25th anniversary production last night and the woman who played Fantine sang so angrily. I definitely prefer Ruthie's performance to the bitter, spiteful portrayals that seem to be popping up all over the place.
@annief31 You sad bitter person this lady is ,has been and always be one of the greatest singers, its just sad that you have no ear for music. And as far Boyle is concerned ok voice but that's it, Lea and Pattie yet again great singers, but as for you SAD.............................
I've watched various live performances on YouTube of just about anything...
and this performance of Ruthie Henshall singing "I Dreamed a Dream" and Simon & Garfunkel's 1981 performance of "Bridge Over Trouble Water" in Central Park is the BEST, BEST, BEST live performances i've seen....no matter what your taste in music is!
Моя любимая версия этой песни. Рути не нужно бегать по сцене и заламывать руки, ее эмоции в глазах и голосе.Все в меру, все прочувствовано. Она чудесна, как всегда.
@joshgardell Wouldn't call her 'bad'?.. I sincerely hope not. That could not be possibly called bad, even if it's not the best rendition. I feel sorry for those that think so. Not wishing to cause offence, but I can't comprehend someone saying this is 'bad' even if it isn't their cup of tea.
I agree, Ruthie's is NOT the best version of this song. She has a very old voice, she has difficulty sustaining the notes, and she just stands there like a tree. Susan Boyle's -- not exactly the best version of this song -- is much better. That tells you how bad Ruthie's singing is.
@archieanders Are you on crack? Trouble sustaining the notes?? Check your hearing. She has more power, more emotion, than anyone other than Patty Lupone. Lea Salonga has a lovely voice, but doesn't have the powerful emotion that Ruthie had. And they all just stand there when they sing it...duh. To even compare this with Susan Boyle (who has a sweet voice and did the song passably well) is just beyond ridiculous..she doesn't have the power or intensity that Ruthie brought to this.
To everyone that keeps yapping on about who the best Fantine or the best singer of this song is- stop and effing listen to this for just a moment. The one thing, the ONE thing that we should all be able to agree on is that this version is absolutely beautiful. EVERY version is. Susan Boyle, Ruthie Henshall, or whoever! They all have something to bring to the table. This version is emotional, it's angry when need be and it's just one version of many that has touched plenty of people's hearts.
Oh, yes, there are PLENTY of individual performances better than this. Don't even include Lupone's or (her friend) Lea Salonga's. Start with fellow Brit SUSAN BOYLE, who succeeded where Ruthie failed: connect with the Brit public using this song. And ironically while she has less training & experience, Boyle has a better voice & is MILLIONS of times more popular. Not just in the theatre world, not just in England, but the world over. Leaves Ruthie in the dust as a domestic starlet.
@sanjayame27 This is the biggest load of nonsense. Susan Boyle appealed to the public because she was such a sudden sensation, and no one expected her to sing like that. She was a fad, where Ruthie has a proper career with actual talent hth
Her performance is so touching, I would have totally cried if I watched les misérables with her in it. It's this performance that made me fall in love with Ruthie.
