what bothers me is that, is this tutorial a replacement for live buttons?

Make the button with the text, then go to Modify --> symbol --> convert to symbol --> then choose button. Then double click it and you can edit each image from there, then go to the export wizard and export for dreamwever, and it will give you a .htm file where you can just copy and paste the image, I thinks its a bit easier, it just saves all the extra work in dreamweaver : )
