has anyone tried it with gabble grip rather then the s grip? i havent been able to grapple in awhile since the college im at has no gyms near it. was just wondering how that would affect it.
thanks man an old wrestler buddy showed me that move said a few judo guys used it
when they were messing around and it was effective . i never could quite remeber what he had showed me since it was very quickly demonstrated one time and was years ago
You would have to be a lot stronger than your opponent to pull this of don't you?
I've tried this with a friend of mine and figured that by simpy gripping your hands together and twisting them the other way (opposite to where top is twisting) and if neccessery put your knee under your grip to further stop the submission. Hence the defense against this move seems a bit to easy and making this more of a stress move rather than a submission?
I have found that people with flexible shoulders can resist or not be affected by this. Not all moves work on all people all the time. That is why it is like chess ;-)
These are really good instructional videos. Keep up the good work.I took some Jiu Jitsu classes years ago and seem to get more out of your videos than I did from my classes...
great explanation, but the move is not that easy. the main problem with scarf hold is it leaves a pass to the back by simply bumping and throwing the headlock off. I don't know too many grapplers who would even attempt a scarf now and days because it's that easy to defend against and leaves you back wide open. even sitting in leg lock scarf is problematic because of the weight shift if opponent squirms under you (again by bumping you up) its a good move if your opponent is unfamiliar with scarf.
I think a lot of that notion comes from poor top control, and not correctly controlling the guy on bottom. Every position has a counter, you wouldn't call guard a weak position because someone could just bull fighter or double underhook. If you lose control of the arm in scarf you need to transition to north/south or back to side control.
You see this is what my problem is. Why would it be called Robinson anything? I don't think that is a common name in Japan. I will give it to you guys, your explanation and videos are very good, but when people start putting their names to chokes and sweeps and guard positions, etc.. that have been staples in judo newaza for a looooooong time really irritates me. Keep up the training.
Yep...you're right...nothing new under the sun but obviously there are many people who don't know the technique...just like any art...you have to be shown something before you know it (or you find it through self discovery).
That's the crazy thing about jiu jitsu. Even if you've done it for years, someone can come along and show you something so simple, that has always been there, and presto, a new move appears. This happens to me all the time. The WOW factor just never seems to go away. I am now learning a whack load of stuff from a SAW/SHOOT Wrestling guy...it's fantastic.
i definately agree with you with the "WOW factor" lol. Keep those vids comin though. I really appreciate the work you guyz do. Its been like the textbook to my practice. lol
Just curious, can this turn into a neck crank or be mistaken for one? Just wondering, because I know some competitions don't allow neck cranks for newbs like me :)
Anyways, I really enjoy your videos and the hard work you guys put into them. Please don't stop :)
was shown this in '76 in a high school wrestling clinic by the 1968 silver medalist Donald Behm. He was about 50 lbs lighter than me, but I couldn't budge him once he had kesa. the secret is to lift your rump about a 1/2 inch off the mat (without leaning over)and thereby collapsing (parital) one lung .
I love keeping people in scarf. I prefer scarf over mount. I just feel so secure in scarf, it's harder for them to sweep. Probably because my base is low and spread out due to my legs. Whilst in mount they can buck and shrimp both sides.
They might but you have to remind them that it isn't. Check out our video on our channel of this being done in competition. here is the video: watch?v=bZAjsthOG-Q
The people who called neck crank aren't very experienced. The ref in the video lets it go as you'll see.
man i have been in scarf so many times and wished i had something other than a (more tradational)choke or arm lock with legs. it is not squirling for something it just makes them tap i love it. definetly my new fave i will have to work on.
is the pressure going to his neck or his arm.. i was kinda confused.. i wrestle and when i do this headlock to get out of it you grab around the waist and roll.. im definitely going to use this in wrestling this season but i dont understand where the pressure goes to
The pressure is IN THE SHOULDER not the neck. Everyone thinks it is a crank; it isn't...not even close. Until you do it or understand it, casual observation may lead you to the wrong conclusion (ie: being a neck crank).
Um... 2nding the opinion of Ari... On the soul basis... of it was just shown exactly WHY its a good position....... Not to mention, its simple biomechanics... Leverage vs. pressure... It would be effective if you didn't know ANY martial art, if u had a guy pinned there, so why the hell would you be able to categorize it as being "not good" for one art or another?... I can think of 1 or 2 other ways to go from there too...
That's a good one, most people think of kesa as just a pin, with a possible armbar, but this will make a real difference once I practice and get smooth with it.
REALLY??? The Scarf is a MAJOR position in jiu jitsu, sambo, and judo. A good scarf (kesa Gatami) can keep you pined to the ground...just ask any experience judoka, jiu jitsuka, or sambo artist.
I agree. The scarf position is fundamental in judo and jitsu-no question whatsoever. Like I said, get a guy who knows what he is doing and it can be VERY hard to get out of.
Yes as long as you know for a 100% fact you are not in a mutiple attacker situation -- so yeah *cough*
You should try the Catch Wrestling version the Kesa Gatami which keeps the pressure on them whether you do the Robinson or not by keept your hips low and butt off the ground. Puts all the pressure on their wind!
Really??? Just like any move in jits-it takes hours or drilling to get it right. I am sure with proper adjustments, you could have a very heavy scarf.
has anyone tried it with gabble grip rather then the s grip? i havent been able to grapple in awhile since the college im at has no gyms near it. was just wondering how that would affect it.

Sambo has this, that's how they like to scarf. Looks much easier than it is, the details are crucial.

The way you trap and lock the arm reminds me of how someone would trap an ankle for a heel hook.

I wonder if referees would also see it as a neck crank. It would suck to get disqualified for it :(
