My problem with "rods" is, that they have a groove pattern on the edges that does not move as they move. If these are series of wing pairs, they don't flap. That seemed strange to me from the beginning. Now that I had read they're bugs, it gives sense. The only thing that would make such pattern is one pair of flapping wings recorded with long exposure. Sort of a timelapse with animation frames put into a line.

Im a pro photographer, and can make pictures of rods just from taking photos of flying insects. The one in this video are insects close to the camera lens at a lower shutter speed making the insects look like they are long with many sets of wings, or "rods". That's all they are, and it's been proven several times.
I wonder if Martin Scorsese in "The Last Temptation of Christ" used some special effects to deliberately present a rod in one of his shots or if this was a real deal.
The rod is seen in a split of seconds in the shot with those screeching hooded figures (lepers I guess) straight after the shot in which Jesus says to his mother: "Who are you?", kisses her on the forehead and leaves (about 80 minute of film roughly).
This is just comical knowing that these "rods" are just insects. This is essentially what they're saying: "BREAKING NEWS: A new group of organisms have been sighted that display all the traits of flying insects, but no one can see them close enough to confirm if they are or aren't just bugs..." I do not think they are all insects. There are just too many cameras with too many different shutter speeds to capture the same images of insects. All of which look exactly the same and are shot all over the world. Some might be insects. But I highly doubt they all are.
@Falsechicken It's not about shutter speeds. It's capture time. Sample rate. Video is not like film. With film the blur is more obvious and you can tell it's an insect. With video, particularly analogue VHS type video, images of fast flying insects get "smeared" as the tape captures the image. Because the tape moves only so fast it appears as though the insect is longer than it is. You can see the pattern of the wings flapping. It looks almost spiral but it's just the wings moving up then down.

Why do the birds chase the rods? Because the birds eat insects. Use a high speed video camera, then slow it way down and see how the rods turn into insects.

I saw one of these things the other day. I was sitting on my girlfriends porch when I saw the exact same thing as in the media video, but this was brownish black colored. I thought it was my eyes at first until I followed it moving from left to right, flying pretty low. My girlfriend lives on a farm surrounded by woods, if that has anything to do with it. I've looked into these things in the past, on the internet and television, and can't quite come up with a conclusion.

Lol 1000 miles per hours!! It's only a defect of the cameras, in face if you use an high-speed cam you could see a lot of frames and see that the rod is an insect, such as moths. Rods look fast because the point of view of the cameras made them apparently so fast

I don't care if you have a a HD camera, If you slow the shutter speed you get the flying rod effect. Speed up the shutter speed and you see the true image, a insect of natural origins.

Scientists are at last looking more thoroughly and realistically into this and thinking on a quantum level. We know that particles of the smallest size exist as a vibration. Therefore, it is possible that other beings can exist on 'different' vibrations to ours. What if these different vibrations are now beginning to merge with our vibrations? I believe that it's important to remain completely open-minded on this and other subjects if they're to be investigated. Scientisis endeavour to replace what's staring us in the face with "simple explanation". Explaining magnetism, light, and gravity is ignored when scientists try to explain the origins of the universe and pontificate over time and relativity. If these "Rods" are using electromagnetic/static propulsion, could this be an advance on the electric eel perhaps? We just don't know.

I think as camera technology continues to improve "rods" will simply disappear, because we'll be able to do perfect high resolution freeze frames without blur and see they are just insects near the camera, etc.

@50CNTRKS - Plants are low entropy lifeforms - they consume resources slowly, and thus are unable to go leaping around like us high resource consuming animals. Photosynthesis doesn't produce enough energy to let anything move at those speeds, so that seems highly unlikely.

I think that these RODS only exist on film because of poor camera quality.

Any fast moving natural animal in the air can look wierd if the camera can't
capture the photo.
IF...(I say)....IF a high speed camera one day captures a clear photo of a really wierd flying thing, That would be cool and interesting for science.

@dandoty001 its funny you should say that about the high speed camera. monster quest was on today and they did capture it. rods are exactly what you said, bugs and birds caught poorly by a camera, there are odd and even sections in captured videos, which in terms makes a car look longer, and instead of 2 wheels, it gives it 4 wheels, if you get what im sayin. so a rod is simply a bug or bird stretched and disorted by a camera, they are rare becuase it all depends on distance, speed, and lighting
