I gave my father-in-law a basil plant, and it has lived for a couple years now, I don't see it dying anytime soon. The secret was that he covered it with a plastic bag during the extreme cold (frost). We are in Southern California though, so the worst we get is 40-50 degrees during the winter.
Hi I am growing sweet genovese basil, tumbler tomatoes and courgettes in pots. Could you possibly tell me some other vegeatbles/frutis/ herbs that suit pots really well?
@DemonicSymphonic he's in the witness protection program. but that wont keep him from sharing his love of gardening with everyone. i hope it's worth it 'cause it'll most likely get him killed!
Bsantianni, I like your method, it makes the plant grow a lot faster next time. But i found a much better method, its slower but grows more leaves, sectors, increases speed. Im posting a video right now. Over 2 months i have finally all lleave sprout sections with about 9 pairs suprisingly! I was shocked too!
@hitachi088 of course, but you dont want to cut it like that. You want it still to survive, i actually have a special technique if u want, I use my own teqnique it to grow more, this guys doing it to grow faster.
Thank you so much for the video. I have been growing several bunches, from seeds, since February. They give me basil when I need but no extra. Your video told me I could have bushier basil plants just by doing some simple pruning. Thanks again!
eeh why do u want to prune them? and when should i do it? i thought it just stand there and when u want ju just pull off some blades and its growing year after year, have i wrong?
@adidasbooi Prune basil to make it produce more. You can have one basil plant so well trained and pruned that it will produce so much basil that you wouldn't be able to give enough of it away.
A great video...I just split my plants up a week ago into 6 pots and hopefully I can use this technique to get more leaves out of them before they get too woody and "planty" tasting.
I saw this video last year and was as courageous as he suggested and cut them down to the last two leaves and I got tremendous results! In years past, as much as tried to pinch off the buds as they came out, my plants all eventually went to seed before I could harvest the leaves. After taking his suggestions, I had plants with large leaves and my plants never went to seed. It was a wonderful season of pesto and I look forward to the same results this season. Thanks for the great video!
i've heard you can get a basil plant to stand 30 foot if you celetape stems together, then remove them after the plant has 'reconjoined', is this true?
I have 2 Basil plants growing outside in my garden there both about 5 inches tall but how long do I have to wait before I start pruning so they can branch?
Thanks for the video, I have 7 huge plants growing and am looking forward to making Pesto as well. I like to make a bunch of it and freeze it in ice cube trays and then store it in a zip lock.
Thank you very much! I am starting an herb garden for my culinary enjoyment this video has helped alot. I know that basil should be well drained does that mean I should buy a pot with a hole in the bottom for transplanting?
When you said dramatic pruning, you really mean it! You pruned the whole thing! Is this safe for the basil tree to grow because I am afraid it won't grow with just two leaves. It's really scary :(
I dunno about a hydroponic system, but my basil plant hasn't passed away as of yet! It's 2 years old, I even let it flower, and forgot about, and it's still blooming like crazy. It's amazing it's still blooming and living on.
me too, i was using aquaponics, and the basil don't seem to like aquaponics in compared to natural soil. both are in sunlight btw. i guess one of aquaponics drawbacks is lack elements P and K so that probably explains it. the basil didn't die though, it just took so long to grow compared to outdoor natural soil
What type of cultivar are you using? Alot of people say basil is an annual, but I think if you get lucky, it could last a very very long time. I've heard some people's basil plants grew into woody bushes. They cut the woody stems and used it to smoke some salmon....man...
Thank you, thank you :))

Wow, that was a healthy handful he had there, now in 2011 a bunch of basil like that shown @ 1:50 would easily run me about 10-12 dollars.
Exactly why I am growing 4 different basil varieties in my own little patch of zone 7 Americana. I dry a basil medley that is simply awesome.
The abundant little plant blesses us all.

Wont be a next time because you wont have a video on basil now that you chopped it like a lumber jack...

So when you want to make a basil plant do you separate each sprout or do you have to put them together?
Does each sprout make a basil plant?

Try growing your hydroponic / aquaponic basil with a tinge of pee in the water. That should provide your NPK. That's what I'm attempting to do now.

@Drasvt no - basil has a natural life-cycle… it's meant to "die"… and be reborn next season via seeds
