  • I used to fling my flute around like that, till at a field party it came apart & broke someone's windshield.....oops!

  • not

  • it wasn't jeffrey hammond hammond playing, it was John Glascock, who unfortunately died.If we don't know who we are talking about can we not post ? !!

  • This isnt even close 2 being a live version.

  • Ian is definitly the shit, what a whackadoo! :D

  • Ian Anderson is absolutly a genius 10000000.....%!!!

  • this mother Fer seems like he is crazy

  • One of their best songs.

    I like the beat.

  • these adverts a fucking joke - particularly when they involve that spiv branson

  • @sockington1 google ian anderson and read about his early life when the band started, this guy is a genius. if you still feel the same then, f---- off

  • Does he go anywhere without that flute?

  • Dallas. My sister lived there for about 5 years. One summer I had her on the phone, and it was like 115 deg there. 90 here is hot. Over 100 = Insane. Record = 3 years ago it hit 100-101 all week, but I am 20 miles inland from the Ocean

  • *Parka* (for the typo-cops)

  • As much as I enjoy watching Ian Anderson's antics in this (and other videos), I really enjoy watching this bass player. He's definitely in his own groove, ripping into that bass. He doesn't seem to be paying any attention to anything or anyone on the stage, just his bass. But I think he's having a good time, even if he's not smiling, looking around or seeming to be very animated. I'm sure he's good, even if he's detached.

  • @TheLawvan

Unfortunatly, he's dead now. May he rest in peace.

  • @underwwraps2 That's sad. Was it an accident or drugs? Really good musicians seem to live pretty close to the edge. The bass player was so young, talented, full of life and looked like he was enjoying himself and the music. I looked for him in other Jethro Tull YouTube posts, but didn't see him; but band members and back-up singers often change. The hot back-up singers for Pink Floyd always seemed to change and be different, but, changing and being different due to death, that's really sad.

  • @TheLawvan His name is Jeffrey Hammond Hammond, on the Fender Jazz Bass, he was a wild man...

  • @steveY2K1 While I have no idea when or how Jeffrey died, I'm sure he made the most out of his life, even if was short. He looked like he was enjoying himself on stage, playing with Jethro Tull. Musicians seem to live for the music, as much as anything else, and Jeffrey probably had a great time. His life was probably pretty exciting. He certainly didn't have a 9 to 5 job. Was he lucky? Hard to say. He certainly was talented. Does he stand out? Yes. Has he been forgotten? No. Rock on!

  • @TheLawvan the're all part of the show, who would believe "Rock Flute"?

  • I loved Tull - saw them three times. A great show every time!

Ian Anderson is a real showman.

  • Have they ever really played this live?

  • @slipyourhips

Yes. Originally in 1971 when it came out and again in 2005 or there about.

  • @underwwraps2 Thank you soo much. I found a couple incredible versions on a bootleg concert site. Just unbelievable. Can't get enough of these boys. Cheers

  • well done good mix. Much appreciated. Thank you.

  • @margovanallen You have a site mail and a posting on your channel page.

  • @margovallen: I'm beat. You win. I'm a clod. and besides all that, I am not even handsome. I am old. 66. I do get the impression that you love to argue.. with the objective of 'proving' yourself right or is it prove the other person wrong? Like winning a game of chess. That said, it is I who am puffed up with pride. Why else to people get into contention?? Hugs.. from the clod

  • @skaha65 Oh honey, take it easy on yourself. Let me spank you! hahaha! I don't like to argue.. but, will obviously.. hehe.

God loves you.. and so do I :-)

  • @margovallen LOL I know,, you HATE to argue.

  • @skaha65 I suppose that if I disagreed, I would be 'arguing?' So, I suppose that I should allow you to have your say and not offer any rebuttal? Besides, it now seems you're trying a different angle.. picking on, what you may deem as some sort of character-flaw?

You're previous response was much more honorable.. and I even tried to soften your own feelings toward yourself.. offering you comfort. I neither like nor hate to argue.

I can, though... and will :-)

  • @margovallen Now you're confusing me. I don't look for flaws.. I like people, generally. I even talk to strangers on the bus, skytrain, and if I saw you walking by me at the Beach on a summer day, I'd probably nod and say 'Hi'

and once you are past me, count to 2 and look back to see if I could catch you doing same. Life is simple, yes?

  • @skaha65 You're so cute. Just too bad the weather in Canada is much to cold for moi. But, if I were a 'betting' girl, I'd bet you would have a solutions for something such as that.. lol.

    Life is good, yes? ;-)

  • @margovallen In Vancouver our winters are mild. We had a cold snap to about 20 deg but now it's 45 and drizzling rain. I DO have a solution, it's called a toque and a praka. what part of the US are you in? I bet it's colder there than here. Life is fun

  • @skaha65 I'm in Dallas, Texas and it's 55 degrees and overcast right at the moment. And you see? I knew you'd have a solution for the cold weather.. toque and parka! Gotta love that! :-)

  • Ian Anderson was the pure showman. Predecessor for groups like Van Halen and i'm sure others. The only other that could>>>I say could be before him is Jim Morrison of the Doors

  • To doncarvil1963. I'm laughing. I think I thought the same thing, that Ian Anderson was Jethro Tull, when I first heard him/them in 1968/69. I'm sure we are not the only 2 people to have jumped to this conclusion and that people just now discovering Jethro Tull are making the same mistake. Keep listening.

  • I like this song now just as much as I did in the late 60s. I also noticed that the Ian Anderson's lips and the lyrics seemed to be a little out-of-sync, but I think it's wrong to shoot or criticize the messenger or to accuse him of screwing this up. It's entertainment; it's great music; the stage show is terrific; and, if someone is upset by it, I say move on and look at and listen to something else that makes you happy. Maybe I'm easy and less demanding, because I'm old, but I still like it.

  • Who put this stupid video on here? This lip-sink crap! What a bunch of poo-shank!

  • @margovallen OK so here's what YOU do: Find the original. Copy the file.. upload it here. THEN I can click on it and say, 'What kind of crap is this? " In other words, 'shut up, asshole'

  • @skaha65 Oh.. nice spin! Perfect FAIL, also! If we cannot do it correctly, lets not do it at all. Doesn't that make much better sense, than to upload something so ridiculous as putting a live video performance with a studio recording?

I'm not an ass-hole. You just did something stupid and I simply voiced a TRUTH. You cannot handle that truth.. so, you call me an inappropriate name.

If I care to hear the studio version of this tune, I can break out the CD.

  • @margovallen I respect your opinion, however I must not be as discriminating because if I do not appreciate something that some one has done without consulting me I can only retaliate by not visiting the site of the offense. Thank You for your time.

  • @doncarvill1963 Well, how in the world would one have known of any said "offense" had one not been at the site, thereof?

And "someone" is a compound word.

    Thank YOU!

  • @margovallen Are you sure you aren't on meds? hey kid, it takes NO brains to trash talk someone's upload. none at all.

  • @skaha65 So ur still exercising ur weak attempts to spin this whole thing? Ur so desperate, you try to make it about me and I'm not the one who uploaded a video entitled 'Jethro Tull Hymn 43 1977'... with the original 1971 studio version of the song. I'm far from a 'kid'.. The reason we're even having this dialogue is because I read the title of your video and after having watched it, was gravely disappointed. I said something and it hurt ur pride. U lash back with childish insults.

  • @margovallen Ok Margo v Allen. What you seem to think is that this is my video. It isn't. I will admit that human pride is a very subtle enemy.. very subtle indeed.. and if I ever deny that as one of my many weaknesses; feel free to call me a liar. Ok I confess to an insult. Very wrong, actually. I was also boorish to call you an a-hole.. I am quite certain that you are a female. probably 30 something, maybe even 40'ish. More later, by site mail, or on your channel page. No harsh words.. k?

  • @skaha65 Quite certain that I am a female? Very good.. being that I have a pic on my profile. And thank U, very much.. for the "30 something, maybe 40'ish" comment in which, I'll take as a nice compliment :-)

And per all the other stuff, I'm sensing theres some sort of an apology in there somewhere, trying to raise its lovely head?

So, in my own mind.. why all the "chivalrous" rhetoric, if its not your video to begin with? You should be agreeing with me.. not burning me @ the stake.

  • @margovallen You do have a way with words. As for the pic. Well I can upload one that looks like Elvis, but it sure won't be me. I have a shot of a '57 Bel Aire 2 dr hardtop as my pic. I AM driven, but still not a car

  • @skaha65 Well, we do indeed have words... and its vastly paramount that they have meaning for proper and most effective communication. But, alas.. sometimes, the conveyor is only as good as the receptor.. a most bitter-sweet pill indeed. Thank God for import beer by which to wash it down :-)

  • @margovallen Agree w you? It's more fun to needle you. This is going good, actually

  • @skaha65 Hmmmm, I'm happy you're so amused. I must say, you've certainly found your niche. I find it important to utilize ones strengths in what one does.. and I can see that you certainly have one :-)

  • @margovallen I agree. It looks very amateurish at BEST. It's a catch 22 because I DO think it was a noble effort but the result is rather silly and pointless.

  • @Chrisdrumz Right? A let-down at best, yes? I would be really awesome to see some vintage live footage of Tull throwing this tune down, no doubt! Say, 1971-73 or so? :-)

  • @margovallen Yeah, that WOULD be awesome but doe ssuch footage exist?!

  • @Chrisdrumz Kinda doubtful.. but, its a really nice thought :-)

  • Question, has Tull performed this song live in the past? I've been looking for good version from the 70's

  • Was there ever a more truthful song Tull Rules.

  • I've always been a big fan of Jethro Tull, for more than 40 years. While I can't remember the names of any of these songs, I remember the music and the lyrics, like it was yesterday. Was this a GREAT band or what? These guys are real musicians with talent that is over the top! There's nothing like them today and there probably never will be. I like Arcade Fire a lot too, and they have serious musical talent, but not they don't have 10% of the energy of Jethro Tull.

  • @TheLawvan I was a fan before I found out the flautist was not Jethro Tull.lol My big sister brought home a poster of Ian Anderson from college, and I put it on the wall in my room.I was about 10 at the time.

  • piss poor job . you screwed it up real good though just saying

  • WHAT an entertainer!

I bet Jesus himself loves this one.

  • @saclrpfrl10 is ian crazy, man?

  • Con el 5% del talento de Ian Anderson y los Jethro tenemos una gran banda . ja ja ja !!!!!!

  • After all these years it still gives me goosebumps.

  • Ahhh the musing of one's youth, Jack Fagin lives.

  • & IT WAS A Good Time & then what happened, these days I fear for the musical deprivation

  • Great track, one of the very best!

  • Une leçon de rock n roll

  • John Evans' piano on this song just rocks the world!

  • Jethro is impossible. Ian' s flute is absolute.

  • @zuleiderezendemirand indeed, the Black Eyed Peas , need this guy!!!!

  • @doobilishis All the bands needs this guy!

  • Wy did you use the studio version of Hymm 43 in a Aqualung live?

  • What are you kidding me?

A total blast from the past.

  • The man... the myth... the legend

  • its a shame the video isnt actually from this recording, btu whatever.

  • legendary fucking song from a legendary fucking group

  • @FoxIslandman It's drilled and riveted together,I've seen them!

  • So classic. Thanks for the upload and the memory.

  • You really need to change the title of this...

  • one Tull track has more great guitar riffs than most guitar bands make in a lifetime

  • Just the best frontman ever. A sprite in motion.

  • Fucking ossim

  • Slightly out-of-sych, but that's ok - it's a hoot seeing JT at their prime...

  • I've seen them once on stage. I've seen this Video a couple dozen times. I hadn't realized how "loose" he maneuvered as a "front-man" and I detected this-time, a backup flute in the band. But that's what you hafta' do to make Live sound like a studio album when performing. It's all GOOD with Me.

  • in this video they are not singing hymn 43 !!

  • Go GreenMan

  • @FoxIslandman You´re a classical player, right?

  • Hymn 43 is Tull DNA

  • There's just something about Ian Anderson......oh la la.....

  • @FoxIslandman Duct Tape

  • cool

  • very cool

  • @FoxIslandman

No, not at all. I can do this with my flute very easily. I uploaded a video of myself doing it, called "ian anderson's flute spin." Check it out. I may have deleted it however. But it can indeed be done without any 'gluing.'

  • 3rd version of this song

I've seen tongiht on YouTube, they're all great!

  • Blijft super :-)

  • @briantravelman You're thinking of Locomotive Breath. The lyric is "...and the train, it won't stop going, no way to slow down." Awesome song, still gets quite a bit of play on classic rock stations.

  • i like it a lot :D

  • ah damnit i knew it wasnt this one. there is this one song they have, it goes something like "and the changes was top runnin..." something like that. then there's a flute solo. its like their second most famous song after aqualung. anyone have any idea?

  • its aqualung!

  • Fitting Song, don't you think so Mrs. Katherine? We can Play this Great Song.

  • check out wolfgangs vault, live at tanglewood 1970 full concert has just been added.

  • this was the best part of 1977 (talking heads too!)

  • This is the version of Hymn 43 off the album, for surely sure.

  • martin barre IS playing a 1959 les paul!

    bad-ass tune man!

  • Comment removed

  • @rvrofdrmz

    No it's not.

"Minstrel" wasn't played at the Hippadrome in '77 (let alone recorded).

This is the video of aqualung, locomotive breath, & thick as a brick.

  • Comment removed

  • @rvrofdrmz My mistake. It is Thick as a brick that still is a great upload from JOAN and Tull

  • I wonder if they ever came out of their conservative, comfort-zone shells to open up a little and take chances?-jk Love JT and it's been a while since hearing this great rock tune from Aqualung album.

  • great blues song.I love the guitar line.

  • Sweet. Thats all I can say is fucking sweet.

  • "He could hardly roll his stone".....great line!

  • Love this Tull song, but does any one actually have a real live clip.I must admit this is cleverly edited but i have the VHS copy of this concert and this is not a performance of Hymn 43.I do know that they perfomed it at the Isle of White show I believe but it was only included on the extra audio CD.Anybody know of any other early 70's performances of this awesome Tull track Live on video?

  • They never played this song at Isle of white (1970).

The song came out on the aqualung album in 71.

I have quite a few REAL audio live performances.

But no video from this era (1971) seems to exist.......yet. UW2

  • @underwwraps2 I wasn't alive back then, but a lot of bands play songs well before they make it onto an album, so I don't think it's out of the question that they would have played it.

  • @AnewKINDofFEELIN

lISTEN, i HAVE OVER 20 1970 SHOWS, NON HAVE 'hYMN 43'. tHE SONG WASN'T RECORDED UNTIL 1971 WHEN IT WAS RELEASED AS A 7 INCH SINGLE WITH BSIDE 'LOCOMOTIVE BREATH' i HAVE THE ORIGINAL SINGLE. (sorry about caps lock)

  • @underwwraps2 great stuff!

  • @9hawklord

What are you trying to say?? I am STILL right! Hymn 43 was NOT played at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970!

But, you were trying to prove my point, thank you! UW2

  • @underwwraps2 No worries keep up the good work.

  • @ochaileg Why no Hymn 33 or Crossed Eyed Mary in concert? Did he piss someone off?

  • soundtrack of my life

  • hell I lived it !

    was alive and well then..

was better those days regardless of no microwave no internet no cell phones..

  • What's a Christmas Angle?

  • never heard of this guy before!.. Not sure about

this sound?? I liked The Osmond Brothers & Andy

    Gibb better in the 70's!!!...

  • I think Paranoid, American Beauty(G.Dead), and some of the best Beatles' solo work came out in 71. Did LA Woman come out that year?

  • does anyone have any tull sugestions?

  • ummmm... IAN GOTS SOME KICKS!!! HE NEEDS TO DO MORE OF THAT!! :D

  • @767fife

Well, All their 70s stuff was favored.

Pretty much EVERYONE's favorite Tull album is Thick As A Brick. I also love that album.

It is the all time master piece album by Tull.

Another favorite album of mine is A Passion Play (1973), it has quite a variety including Ian Playing a saxaphone. Another excellent album was War child.

    Check those out.... UW2

  • the outfits! holy shit...

  • Comment removed

  • The video is not Hymn 43 ... the soundtrack is though.

  • What else came out in 1971? It seemed like a "classic rock" year like no other.

  • Meddle - Pink Floyd Fragile - Yes Pawn Hearts - VDGG Tarkus - ELP The Yes Album- Yes Eloy - Eloy Low Spark of High heeled boys - Traffic Islands - King Crimson In the Land of Grey and Pink - Caravan Nursery Cryme - Genesis Pictures at an Exhibition - ELP Who's Next - The Who Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin Sticky Fingers Rolling Stones I could live off 1971, music wise.
  • @767fife , you make an excellent case for the year 1971. But, lest we not forget, 1967 - 1979 all had some pretty impressive rock releases put out as well. Definitely the golden age of rock.

  • @marcfedak actually, i would extend it back to 62 and forward to 80 or 82, back because of revolver by the beatles and bob dylans stuff, and forward for a couple rush albums and duke by genesis, though i regard 65 to 75 as the best 10 years in music.

  • @767fife sans rolling stones, i agree

  • UW2, as consolation for not getting to go - I'm very bitter - can you give me a run down of this songs he played? Thanks!

  • @jeffandchristina

I have gained much info in my 2 years of Tull collecting.

I have hundreds of Tull shows which can easily give me an idea of what it was like back then (i'm onlt 13).

Starting from 1971, they played Aqualung & Locomotive Breath every year live.

Those are their most famous tracks.

Check out the site-ministry of information (you can google it) to look at the information of just about EVERY Tull show they've played through th years.

    Give it a look. UW2

  • @underwwraps2 I saw them in around 1977. I had not ticket or money and went to the concert hoping someone would give me a ticket...and it was a great show.

  • LOLOL underwraps you didn't read my post.... I CAN'T go! You're post is making it worse. WAAAAAA dammit!!!

  • Oh, so sorry.

I am making/constructing some footage I took at the concert and will upload it to my youtube page.

That should give you a good idea of what the concert was like. UW2

  • I'm bawling my fucking eyes out watching this. Anderson is in concert in chicago tonight and I can't go. DAMMIT!!!!

  • I just saw him at Milwaukee last night (the 6th).

    You will have a BLAST!!

Ian's voice is fantastic for his age.

    ALSO-3 new songs......

    Enjoy! UW2

  • Hiya - I gotta tell ya - I'm seeing Ian for the first time in 36 years - last time I was 16 at Madison Square Garden. I swear to christ, I'm 52 I'm afraid I'll pass out. I LOVE Tull.

  • Fine tribute to one of THE great live bands in rocknroll.

    Thanks,uw.

  • ian anderson is fukked up in this video

  • Hymn 43 is Tull's DNA...

    Outstanding song........

    oh jesus save me

  • Loco, le pegaste el tema por encima, como me molesta cuando la gente hace pelotudeces como estas, si van a subir esto para eso no suban nada.

  • tull fucking rules.

  • anyone ever read any posts by a cat named TULLYNOL ... Scary but very knowledgeable about Ian and Tull

Scares me a bit. ,intreating character to say the least

  • Man, Ian Anderson could move in those days!

  • wow, this is pretty good video matching to the song. i thought it really was them playing it for a second.

  • and then he made his name in Hollywood.

  • You should really make a note that, in the video, they're playing "Aqualung." This is just Hymn 43 played over a chopped up video.

  • No flute in aqualung.

This is actualy dubbed over like 4 or 5 songs....;) UW2

  • this isn't the London Hippodrome,it's the Golders Green Hippodrome, filmed for the BBC old grey whistle test

  • You are correct, except they didn't do the 'Old Grey Whistle Test' until 1978, a year Later at Madison Square Garden.

    Thanks for watching! UW2

  • Comment removed

  • yeah the show was 'sight & sound" brits associate it with whistle test as Bob Harris introduced both shows.

  • GOLD TIME!!

  • love this tune

  • they're still together; i saw them in august. Anderson's voice is pretty weak these days, other than that, it was a pretty good show.
