there is another thing which proofs i am not stupid. i graduated this summer at one of the best Film academys in england. see my videochannel, there are many videos i have done in the classroom. my teacher was christopher wollard (lord of the rings) and with my diploma as professional cameraman / technician i think i know pretty much more about cameras, technic and special effects then any regular guy or wannabe film professional. i call myself an expert with confidence. this video is fake!
There's something supremely psychedelic about watching Pink Floyd through that round old B&W TV.... like you're in a real scene from "The Wall". Far out man!
There is no strobing, but there are characteristics that lend to such being that particular set in operation. It is very possible to get a noise-free and sharp image on those old sets with a good signal. Particularly the early sets, as they had many stages of picture IF in typical chasses. I have a Zenith "porthole" that could produce a picture like that with a short length of wire for an antenna and the station a good 60 miles away.
Black and white video was far better ona black and white set then early color tv. you don't have to converge a black and white ser and the focus voltage was not so high
@martbd You didn't have many options in the late 40's, unless you were willing to spend much more money. Vacuum tubes are easiest to make when they're circular, which is why widescreen CRT televisions were quickly replaced with LCDs.
looking good, there is a set much like this at my parents house with contrast almost as good, i have been through it and made it work just fine on NTSC, looks good, but it has a fair bit of oscillator drift when it gets hot (either bad carbon comps or bad capacitors), that damn tv is as heavy as a 40+" crt
I think your video choice was excellent! I've seen many old porthole sets over the years, and so to your doubters, yes, they do look this good! I've got a 1949 Emerson (round tube behind a cropped bezel) that displays just as nice, or did, until I lost the HV in it. Might just be the rectifier tube socket as this was wobbly when i got it. Great set! You should do more restorations, your good at at it! Cheers!
I have a related video on YouTube you might be interested in about how television sets were sold from the 1950s-1970s entitled, "TV MAN: THE SEARCH FOR THE LAST INDEPENDENT DEALER."

since i am very familiar with tubes (i build tube amps) and vintage stuff i really doubt this is real! i believe it is a video montage made with after effects. no TV set from 1949 has such a clear picture since they had only 525 line raster. check wiki for NTSC
@rockangel1967: You seem to underestimate the image quality it is possible to get with 525 lines.
525 lines is still the standard today for non-HD today (NTSC).
Furthermore, if you are watching this video in normal size, the "clear picture" you are looking at has actually about 180 lines. The whole video is 480 x 360 (360 lines).
OMG !! this tv set was restored completely and you can find more about this project just going to GOOGLE for "Raytheon Porthole Angelo". The TV works perfectly both on 525 or 625 lines, fed by a DVD player, thru a channel converter and with a World Converter (it converts signal from 625i to 525i lines, but it is not really necessay since it works perfectly also on 625i). If you want to see a better picture on YouTube look for "Liberace Nola Zenith" ..so you better look around before doubting :-)
@ftipo Rubbish this was done with software, the tubes were not that good in 1949, even with a standards converter and I've been in electronics for well over 20 years - total fake
@rockangel1967 Plus the fact if you are filming a TV screen with a TV camera where is the raster interference and why doesn't the picture go out of sync - agreed definitely fake
Very interesting to see an actual functioning picture on a TV of this age - all I've ever seen before (that I can remember) have been still photos.
Notice that the close-ups look quite good, but the views of the audience often are so lacking in resolution that you can't really tell what the picture is.
I think I'd prefer to see a 1949 TV show instead of the now-elderly members of Pink Floyd, however.
Exellent Project, and with Pink Floyd displayed no less, fantastic. Seen any old 405line video recordings about ? Seeing your interest in vintage tv's and shows that is. If not no worries. Great clip, and set, never seen one in working condition before.
parabéns pela tv!!! e ainda escutando pink floyd, merlhor ainda.

I fail to see the point of posting this fake video.
Whoever did it is obviously too young to know what this tube was capable of.
