  • Sounds great indeed!

  • hi AnalogAudio1

please does your solina get the "Horn" or "Brass" sound ?

    thank you dude.

  • @FONKIMAXOU of course, all Solinas have these presets.

  • I wish for a minipops7 for Christmas ;-)

  • Check out the synth break in Decades by Joy Division for possibly the most haunting/unsettling use of this machine

  • @AndPlus I know, it was what came to mind and then i read your comment...

  • @AndPlus nearly right mate ,, they used the solina for Atmosphere as Martin Hannet had one in the studio ,, Joy D got an Arp Omni 2 of their own , and used on stage and recording , especially closer album ,, u can see their Omni 2 on the L W T U A video , they also used Martins Arp 2600 , hope this helps

  • @LouisvilleTorn8o

The synth in Tramontane that makes the cool vocal "aah" sound is a Vako Orchestron. As far as monosynth's go, Al used an EML 101 both live and in the studio on the first 2 albums. Since the EML-101 had 4 oscillators, a ring modulator, and was semi-modular, he felt like it was more flexible than either the Minimoog or Odyssey. He said that he was a bit intimidated by the more complex ARP 2600 which was more complex and had more features than the EML.

  • Did Wham!'s "Last Christmas" use that synthesizer?

  • @LouisvilleTorn8o thanks... the sounds heard on this recording are similar, bu tnot from the Solina String Ensemble.

  • VERy similar strings to an Arp Omni

  • One just have to love these old soulful machines.

  • Where can I get these?

  • I'd love one of these

  • Best Strings sound ever.

  • No matter how many samples you take, the beast is the beast.

  • Info and demo really good thankyou very much : )

  • check out billy beck from the ohio players..he killed this thing..especially on I WANT TO BE FREE..actually the whole FIRE album..

  • Instant Kosmich Musik

  • Beautiful sound! Best strings you can get anywhere, from any synth ever made.

  • Great JM Jarre panoply . That's very good sound.

  • nice one!

  • i have one just like this, i bought it painted in black, what could be the value . . .

  • At the 1:40 part, sounds a little like Styx'x Mr. Roboto. BTW, didn't Styx use this too?

  • anyone know where i can get 3 red slider caps for one?

  • @miamigroove old Solina organs have the same caps. But not always in red... grey or white. But it also looks cool.

  • @miamigroove Here i think. At "vintagevibe(dot)com" and go to "Miscellaneous Instruments & Parts"

  • reminds me of zelda, for some reason I have always liked this string synth, I don't know why it doesn't sound cheesy, only natural. Must be the built in phaser.

  • hola! que polifonia tiene?polyphony? Buen video ;) GREAT VIDEO!

  • Robert Smith like these ;D

  • @arrisfilms I think, he rather liked the Roland RS-09...

  • @AnalogAudio1 It has his name on it (kind of)

  • @AnalogAudio1

And the Solina too - rather apparent on several recordings ;)

  • @AnalogAudio1 He has a Solina in the attic and used it on many recordings. The RS-09 was a good way to emulate the sound, but I only saw it once on stage in 1983.

  • great video!

would you mind telling me which version of the small stone phase you used?

    thanks in advance

  • @mazebeatzofficial It is the 2nd version.

  • This is a original Jarre sound strat at 4.47

    GREAT - Nice machine

  • On the VIVA-ROXY MUSIC album , "both ends burning" - oh really you should listen to the whole record - Eddie Jobson on keyboards/violin ... anyway-lots of stringensemble - like mellotron a classic sound- oh dear, i'm just this really old person!

  • @MoogKorgfan right, Roxy Music played it as well.

  • Beautiful sounding string machine. My first synth was an Arp Axxe. Wish I had gotten a String Ensamble or Omni back then too...

  • Is it a Solina mkI or mkII?

  • I don't know anything about a MK II... This one is the earliest, classic model.

  • Ur minipops has different knobs, they look like knobs from Univox SR-95.

  • yes, this one is an early model (serial 31XXX - which has those rectangular slider caps. The later ones (for example serial 60XXX) have those Minikorg slider caps.

  • actually this is the mk 2, it has a modulation (chorus/ensemble) toggle switch. I have the original mk 1 with no switch, better sound

  • @34672rr The MK 1 seems to be very rare - I have never seen one.

  • Was this string machine used by Bernard Sumner in Joy Division's song "Atmosphere"?

  • that was an arp OMNI i think

  • Yes, heard him talking about it recently

  • Im pretty sure..

  • What's the switch on the top right of the Small Stone for?

  • That's an ON/OFF switch to interrupt the battery current, to save battery power.

  • Cool thanks for the reply. It's a great sound. Never gets old!

  • I really dig that string sound :-)

I've done something very similar on my D-50, although not as "lush".

I wish the Solina had 61 keys instead of 49 :-p Maybe a DIY project could add these 12 more keys

  • four octaves are enough... if you want to go higher, you take the "violin" preset. It is 1 octave higher than "viola".

  • Can this be used in place Emienten 310's String Ensemble ? Are the sounds a lot different ? My 310U Takes too much room :)

  • the Solina can not substitute a Eminent 310. These two machines sound different and they have different features. But some sounds can sound similar.

  • fucking sounds so awesome. can get cheesy with the wrong setting and single notes

  • Some of the things you're playing almost sound like something Tangerine Dream did on their "Green Desert" album. There's a lot Solina String sounds on that album. I also liked the Jarre sounds at 4:50. Very nice.

  • Thanks... yes - such kind of sounds I wanted to play like on the "green desert" album. Edgar Froese used the Solina a lot - on many albums.

  • a polymoog probably

  • yeah

that was Polymoog, the only lead instrument of KW during the Computerworld era

  • mh...The main melody of the song computerwelt is played by a stringmachine na-na na-naaaaa.

It sounds like a solina with the inbuild chorus turned of or modified. I allwasy thought its a solina? I probably read that somewhere.

    It's definately a string machine.

If not, what is it then?

  • @ biglebowski :

kraftwerk uses a solina string ensemble on computerwelt...

  • LOL))))))

    maybe in 'The Mix' also?

  • I am tired of guys listing JMJ equipment and trying to recreate all the nuances of his fucking sound.

he killed the minipops-7 and the quijada.

  • LOL, why do you say that? :-)

  • Very 'A clockwork orange' at the beginning in the korova milk bar with the phaser!!

  • Yeah! Just what I was thinking.

  • Kraftwerk never used string synthesizers. The only ARP used on 'Autobahn' was Odyssey (for some car noises)

  • You're wrong - listen more carefully to the track "Mitternacht". That's a Solina with ENSEMBLE switched off. I'm playing such kind of sounds also in my video.

  • I knew you'll say this))

This sound comes from Farfisa organ, the only polyphonic organ ever used by band. Ralf Hutter played it on stage from 73 to 75. The same sound can be heard on live recordings of Kraftwerk '74-75. 'Autobahn' was their last album to use Farfisa.

  • I deeplly NEED to get an ARP Solina String- Ensemble, really. If anyone could help me, I'll pay very good...

  • very good demo Chris I have too a solina string ensemble wonderful string machine

  • thanks... yes, it's one of the best string machines.

  • Classic analog sound!

  • Very nice demo, thanks!

  • wow! you have some amazing kit!. i'd love to have one of these. love synth-strings!

  • Warm sound!!!!!!

  • Das Solina hatte ich auch mal. Ist schon ziemlich lange her.

  • Excellent demo! The ARP/Solina String Ensemble has always been a favorite of mine! I believe Triumvirat used one extensively on the Spartacus album.

I purchased a COTK C1670 Ensemble Generator for my modular synth to obtain a dimilar sound. (do a search for it on YouTube, I have a quick demo up)

  • great demo

  • Great video!

    Thanks very much!

  • Great demo, great string machine. A lot of possibilities.

  • Man that looks like an awesome synth. Where do you buy them?

  • I bought it from a newspaper add ten years ago.
