@AndPlus nearly right mate ,, they used the solina for Atmosphere as Martin Hannet had one in the studio ,, Joy D got an Arp Omni 2 of their own , and used on stage and recording , especially closer album ,, u can see their Omni 2 on the L W T U A video , they also used Martins Arp 2600 , hope this helps
The synth in Tramontane that makes the cool vocal "aah" sound is a Vako Orchestron. As far as monosynth's go, Al used an EML 101 both live and in the studio on the first 2 albums. Since the EML-101 had 4 oscillators, a ring modulator, and was semi-modular, he felt like it was more flexible than either the Minimoog or Odyssey. He said that he was a bit intimidated by the more complex ARP 2600 which was more complex and had more features than the EML.
reminds me of zelda, for some reason I have always liked this string synth, I don't know why it doesn't sound cheesy, only natural. Must be the built in phaser.
@AnalogAudio1 He has a Solina in the attic and used it on many recordings. The RS-09 was a good way to emulate the sound, but I only saw it once on stage in 1983.
On the VIVA-ROXY MUSIC album , "both ends burning" - oh really you should listen to the whole record - Eddie Jobson on keyboards/violin ... anyway-lots of stringensemble - like mellotron a classic sound- oh dear, i'm just this really old person!
yes, this one is an early model (serial 31XXX - which has those rectangular slider caps. The later ones (for example serial 60XXX) have those Minikorg slider caps.
Some of the things you're playing almost sound like something Tangerine Dream did on their "Green Desert" album. There's a lot Solina String sounds on that album. I also liked the Jarre sounds at 4:50. Very nice.
You're wrong - listen more carefully to the track "Mitternacht". That's a Solina with ENSEMBLE switched off. I'm playing such kind of sounds also in my video.
This sound comes from Farfisa organ, the only polyphonic organ ever used by band. Ralf Hutter played it on stage from 73 to 75. The same sound can be heard on live recordings of Kraftwerk '74-75. 'Autobahn' was their last album to use Farfisa.
Das Solina hatte ich auch mal. Ist schon ziemlich lange her.
Sounds great indeed!

@miamigroove old Solina organs have the same caps. But not always in red... grey or white. But it also looks cool.

@miamigroove Here i think. At "vintagevibe(dot)com" and go to "Miscellaneous Instruments & Parts"

Is it a Solina mkI or mkII?
ostranenie1913 2 years ago
I don't know anything about a MK II... This one is the earliest, classic model.

yes, this one is an early model (serial 31XXX - which has those rectangular slider caps. The later ones (for example serial 60XXX) have those Minikorg slider caps.

actually this is the mk 2, it has a modulation (chorus/ensemble) toggle switch. I have the original mk 1 with no switch, better sound

rg2027x 2 years ago
That's an ON/OFF switch to interrupt the battery current, to save battery power.
AnalogAudio1 2 years ago
Cool thanks for the reply. It's a great sound. Never gets old!
rg2027x 2 years ago
I really dig that string sound :-)
I've done something very similar on my D-50, although not as "lush".
I wish the Solina had 61 keys instead of 49 :-p Maybe a DIY project could add these 12 more keys
Decimator7 2 years ago
four octaves are enough... if you want to go higher, you take the "violin" preset. It is 1 octave higher than "viola".
AnalogAudio1 2 years ago
Can this be used in place Emienten 310's String Ensemble ? Are the sounds a lot different ? My 310U Takes too much room :)
czolgista999 2 years ago
the Solina can not substitute a Eminent 310. These two machines sound different and they have different features. But some sounds can sound similar.
AnalogAudio1 2 years ago
fucking sounds so awesome. can get cheesy with the wrong setting and single notes

that was Polymoog, the only lead instrument of KW during the Computerworld era

mh...The main melody of the song computerwelt is played by a stringmachine na-na na-naaaaa.
It sounds like a solina with the inbuild chorus turned of or modified. I allwasy thought its a solina? I probably read that somewhere.
It's definately a string machine.
If not, what is it then?

Excellent demo! The ARP/Solina String Ensemble has always been a favorite of mine! I believe Triumvirat used one extensively on the Spartacus album.
I purchased a COTK C1670 Ensemble Generator for my modular synth to obtain a dimilar sound. (do a search for it on YouTube, I have a quick demo up)
