@rallyeluke You remember your parents playing this song - how old are you? I guess time is slipping away from me quicker than I'd like to admit, as this album came out during a year i was unemployed, so it sticks out in my mind. Kinda don't get the "made me cry/lol" comment. When I cry, I usually don't Lol!
This is superb one of the greatest Dire Straits themes, it's rather unusual for Knopfler to play a riff in such a repetetive manner however from my point of view it serves to underline the futile, manic hunt of the protagonist put against the more reflexive part describing his context
I agree with the assertion that On Every Street should have been a little better than it was. Perhaps a little too understated for its own good. I don't think anyone realistically expected it to surpass or even match the runaway success of Brothers in Arms, but the gap should have been a lot closer than it was. Nevertheless, there are some great swansong moments for Dire Straits on the album and this is one of them.
The solo stopped me on my tracks the first time i heard it in 91. Can still remember the day, i was standing outside the house and my bro was playing this real loud, I just stood in awe
Pure genius these guys, been a long time since I have seen them live though. I nearly blow my speakers listening to this song, you just CANNOT listen to it at low volume! My neighbours hate me, lol.
@yeashas ....I loved D.S. too however, as long as Mark Knopfler is still around, making music, releasing CD's, and playing live, it's all good....at least in my opinion!
I think about someone looking for a loved one who died on 9/11 whenever I hear this song...and the pictures of all the missing people put up all around the trade center site.
music is how you interperut it. everyone see their own story. this song made me find christ, laugh if you will, I dont care. This is the most beautiful song I know. Angelic if you will.
It's a song about my 1st true love for me. All these years later I am still looking for her face on every street. I have heard it said that a man never looses it for his first love and I can account for it's truth. I always think of her when I listen to this.
Everytime I listen to this song, I always imagine the voice of a Private Detective, somebody haunted by an ugly and inescapable past, somebody who has been given the hopeless mission of finding somebody who either does not want to be found or will never be found, because they are dead. The Detective feels the loss as if it were his own, because he has lost to. He knows it only too well.
Through the years I've never known what to say when asked "what is your favourite song?". Well, now I know what I've been searching for. "Pleasure and pain", extremely beautiful and sad at the same time - genuine masterpiece!
This, Money for Nothing, Sultans and Your Latest Trick, easily the best songs of all time. I'm 14 and I listen to Dire Straits every second i can get. Most kids my age like Lady Gaga and Justin Beiber and stuff but i just turn my IPod to this and crank it. If you agree with what I'm saying or if your 14/15 and you like this song, thumbs up
I just got this CD out again and was listening to some songs as I drove around town, I found myself liking this song more now than ever and I wish they would just keep playing on and on.
even if you enjoy the song you still just sit there and wait for the outro, where the serious play begins. One of the best rock outros in the history of man, amen! If you dont enjoy this tune, go see your shrink!
ABSOLUTELY! i rescued this young gal from the streets who had been "turned out" and every time i hear this tune, i think of her. hope it worked out for her!!!!!! dangit!
the greatest dire straits and probably the greatest rock song ... havent heard a better outro to a song than this ... 0 dislikes .. YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2:15 -every victory has a taste of BitterSweet - ?!
I hope 1 enemy of mine is celebrating/gloating as he won by Forging"evidence" . Madonna did the BitterSweet thing too! What song did Mark bang on about - thePleasure and thePain- in ?
By the way, one of the best sounds around. You should leave it to the British when it comes excellent songwriting...Dire Straits, Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, James, Blur, Radiohead...oh they are magnificient and endless
In my opinion, this is much much much better than the mega-selling Brothers in Arms, which includes one of most sleep-inducing songs of Money for Nothing. I used to dislike Dire Straits before this album because they sounded so "artificial" so "soulless" (except for Sultans of Swing) but this album is...a masterpiece...
I got the Dire Straits chord book for christmas, so I'm sitting here going through the songs on Youtube with my Telecaster on my lap. This and "The Man's Too Strong" are my two favourites to play just now.

And every victory has a taste that's bittersweet
And it's your face I'm looking for on every street...
