It can make a huge difference. Paying attention to information coming out just before, during and right after a "event" is crucial in getting a better understanding of what actually took place. This information, which is sometimes "lost", is important to have in order to battle the media which will manage the masses perception of the event. Also if enough people suspect something, that might, just might thwart the "event".
