  • "Someone in this town is trying to burn our SOPA down. They wanna stop the ones who want a web to wind a ban around." -Congress

  • Flood (1990), the best album by these guys

  • Looks like there are 14 people in this town who want to stop the ones who want a rock to wind a string around. There are also 14 people in this town who want to burn the foreheads down, they just happen to be the same people.

  • Did Linnell shave his eyebrows? Lookin' a bit creepy. Maybe it's to make room for the prosthetic.

  • not me I want a big prosthetic forehead to wear on my real head

  • did he say "buy a big prothesthetic forehead"

  • Never tire, Unless it's sevre tire damage, I love em Saw em in 2000 Best show ever. IN ADELAIDE!!! Thanks Johns and uploader.

  • I dunno 'bout you guys, but everyone I know wants a rock to wind a piece of string around!

  • their new album is so boss

  • thought it was"throw the crypt door wide"

  • This is one of my TMBG all time favorites and I think it's an iconic song. My daughter, when she was 8 or 9 gave me a rock and a piece of string for fathers day (with a note), I still have it and love it :)

  • 13 people don't have arock :P

  • toby sent me?

  • Throw the crib door wide, let the people crawl inside"

  • Didn't NPR originally post this?

  • Like this if you'll just never tire of bein tire....!

  • More songs need accordion.

  • @bag04u Just like I would say DBZ is over-rated, but that's just my opinion. I dont go to all those videos and spout hate all over the place like some kind of hate-sprinkler system set to overwater.

  • @bag04u Or you could just say "it's not my taste in music" instead of hating

  • I think 10 people who watched this might really have prosthetic foreheads on their real heads..

  • TMBG sing the best songs ever!

  • They're trying to burn the playhouse down!!!this song is deep.seriously...great alligories.

  • FOR GOD'S SAKE! SOMEONE GET THIS MAN A ROCK!

  • Not to discredit the album, but those who say they are TMBG fans and have only heard Flood are kind of like people who claim to be Bob Marley fans and have only heard Legend....

Apollo 18, Lincoln, Factory Showroom, John Henry, Mink Car, Miscellaneous T and the self titled album are right up there with Flood.

BUY them all!! Your socks will be rocked right off!!!

  • @PatrickRob82 I think people unfairly judge The Else, or the Venue songs. I liked them, they're not on the same level as say, Apollo 18, but they're awesome too. Don't count them out. Also, John Linnell's solo State Songs, those are AWESOME.

  • @JuliusBonapart With all due respect, one can't unfairly judge a piece of music in my opinion. One either likes it, or they don't. TMBG has a wealth of absolutely stellar music under their belts and anyone would be wise to explore their vast body of work. That being said, I didn't care for but a few tracks in any album past Mink Car. My judgement IS fair, as I am a huge and educated fan of the duo. Even if I wasn't, my opinion would be fair, as all art is left to interpretation. -respectfully.

  • @PatrickRob82 I love it when people who can barely at all adopt scholarly language. Sorry, I mean "one loves it".

    Great song though.

  • @thengoto20 don't be pointin' out my stupid.

  • @PatrickRob82 Your opinion is absolutely fair. Awesome to find another TMBG fan, even though you might not like the stuff after Mink Car. So...kudos?

  • @PatrickRob82 IMO, Join Us was almost perfect. The only things I didn't like were Celebration and Let your hair hang down, and both of those are only just.

  • I want a real head on my prosthetic forehead.

  • loved these fella's since 91 when i first heard birdhouse. awesome.

  • Ka is a wheel!

  • I don't even know why I love them so much (and I don't want to), but the words they sing ring with golden truth. Ka is a wheel.

  • i want a prosthetic forehead on my real head.

  • 9 people don't have a rock to wind a piece of string around.

  • I love this band, and I'm immortal

  • TMBG is one of my fav bands (I'm 587 years old!)

  • Throw the crib door wide!!!!!

  • now I want a rock to wind a piece of string around ...

  • This is great, but they should have kept Bill Krauss as their producer, it would have been better with him as the producer.

  • This is the song that created all those damn Klingons... "everybody wants prosthetic foreheads on their real heads!" ... are you for real?

You want to burn my forehead down! Fascist!

  • ive forgotten how many times ive listened to this song...

  • throw the cribdoor wide!

    Love em!

  • just heard this for first time....awesome i love these guys and they are fun to listen to with my toddler son!thanks squiggy!

  • I discovered this song a few months ago...... according to itunes I've listened to it over a hundred times.

  • they are still my fave, too, after 20 years!

  • I want a prosthetic forhead as well !

  • Accordian solo!!!!

  • Just bought Flood after only having heard a couple of songs from it in the past. Kind of nice to buy an album and discover it's a complete classic you overlooked.

  • in my yearbook i put my favorite quote as "if i were a carpenter i'd hammer on my piglet" ha

  • Like this if you'll just never tire of TMBG!

Or if you're a carpenter. Or if you want a prosthetic forehead on your real head.

Or if you know someone who was a hotel detective. (I know, wrong song, but I had to throw that in).

  • @JuliusBonapart Or your last name is Ng and you have a racist friend who keeps moving your chair.

  • @StovePictures Or you were last treated medically by a drummer who goes by Dr. Worm who likes to whistle in the dark.

  • @JuliusBonapart

    Are you an actual Bonaparte?

  • @Hoekell No, although that does sound kind of cool. Spelling's different.

I am an actual Julius, if that helps any.

  • I grew up with this music, but more importantly, this song got stuck in my head when I had a mental breakdown a couple of years ago. When I wasn't terrified I was going insane, this song would play in my head, so vividly it was almost an audio hallucination, and it caused me an extreme amount of stress because 90% of my waking moments was playing this OVER AND OVER AND OVER. Point being I think it's ruined for me.

  • @iptik <3

  • @iptik Just be thankful it wasn't a Lady Gaga song bouncing round inside your head, it would have exploded by the sound of it.....

  • Its weird how as Ive gotten older..some of these songs will bring me to tears for no reason. The meaning is so fluid that if you grew up listening to it can really become a part of you. They Might Be Giants helped make me who I am..Even if that person is a sentimental sap, 8)

  • Ah TMBG I miss there lunacy so much. They were great to listen to in the car. I had a cd with this song on it. It was funny as hell when I was stuck in rush hour and would blast this song.

  • how could prosthetic foreheads even work!!! D:

    love the song though

  • Everybody wants prosthetic foreheads on their real heads. Man, these guys were prophets!!

  • 7 people are people who either want to

    -Burn the playhouse down

-Stop people from getting a rock to tie a piece of string around

-Stop people from getting Prosthetic Foreheads for their real heads

    or be trollz.

  • hey my channel is full of great they might be giants songs. see for yourself

  • great lyrics

  • I actually looked this up after Tobuscus sang it in a TobyGames. xD "Everybody wants a rock to scare the hell out the monster away!"

  • @AustiNoTexas OMG I love Toby! Especially if he's giving this amazing band more fans. My response to that was like "OMG TOBY THAT'S A TMBG REFERENCE!" and I immediately left a comment saying "who got the TMBG reference" even though I realized later that he gives it away. He sang Particle Man later on in Amnesia as well.

  • @ownagepie24 Do you know what episode he sang Particle Man in?

Actually, this was two months ago.. But you still might know? :P

  • @zAlyse1337 It's one when he's in the sewers, that's all I know... or maybe that was this song. I don't remember, sorry.

  • @ownagepie24 That's this song.. Unless it's both.

Ahh well thanks anyway, maybe someone else will know!

  • PROSTHETIC FOREHEADS

  • "Someone in this town / Is tryin' to burn their foreheads down..."

Great , mad lyrics. I love these guys...

  • @mightyluv Their play house*

  • @Intoxiqated 2:30 foreheads*

  • @mightyluv I stand corrected.

  • Seven people have the rock but not the string to wind around.

  • I'm impressed

  • This song always makes my day^^ "Everybody wants prostetic foreheads on their real heads" XD It makes me laugh and keeps me smiling throughout the day no matter how bad it's been^^ <3

  • This is one of their randomest songs.

  • @RobotMonkeyVideos no random is minimum wage...short awesome... random. look up n enjoy

  • @RobotMonkeyVideos random is good look up minimum wage short random awesome

  • Ah songs about whorehouses. Classic

  • I love this song 'cause it's just so self-consciously anti of everything that was popular in music at the time. It's the nerdy kid who flies his far much more clever freak flag apart from all the carbon-copied highschool metalheads.

  • Why can't songs be friendly and bizarre? Why all the anger and angst and dumb shit? That gets boring after it's been done a million times. Here's a polka-influenced song sung with nonsense verse about people being overly trendy. Enjoy!

  • @HisEmptyHouse awesome insight!!!

  • where was I? I forgot the point that I was making...

  • whos here because of huskys status on facebook?

  • @SonOfGnome I AM!!!! hahahahah :P ther an aight band too, i think atleast

  • @SonOfGnome Not me.

  • 7 people didn't save up for a piece of string and a rock to wind a piece of string around. :C

  • great stuff!!, flood is a classic album!!

  • I want a prosthetic forehead on my real head, whilst I'm winding a piece of string with a rock.

  • why is tmbg in a bare naked ladies mix?

  • Prosthetic foreheads..?

  • @ArsenicPoison123

    ball caps

  • Flood was the first album of theirs I owned, and it's my second favorite. Lincoln will always be #1 in my opinion.

  • one of the best songs off flood.

  • Brilliant!! I love this band and those who actually had a rock pets must be nuts

  • They are just true originals; lyrically and musically. Wonderful.

  • Between Linnell's expression and white shirt, I almost think he's in a straitjacket.

  • One of my favourite songs!

  • This is probably one of my most faveourites songs ever :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

  • @richardmulroy NO WAY!!!!! Weird Al is cool, but TMBG are WAY cooler and they rock. Besides, they actually write their own music.

  • Thanks TMBG! from all of us with prosthetics! after all, it's just our string.. i mean thing, right? ;)

  • Oh how it brings me back. <3

  • Been listening to these guys since I was a little kid, still awesome! One of my favorite songs!

  • This.

  • @tlucentefl this was my favorite song back when I was 2

  • @tlucentefl Me too brother...me too. Soul food.

  • Comment removed

  • i did a parody we want a string to wind a rock around :D

  • I just looked down and saw people trying to find deep meaning... in a TMBG song!

  • I like TMBG, and I'm an adult male.

  • These guys are so weird, but they are so awsome, too.

  • Kermit

  • All I want for Christmas is a rock to wind a piece of string around,

  • me too. :D

  • Im 11 and ever since my mom got flood it is like the only CD i listen to!!!!!!!!! They Might be Giants are AMAZING!!!!!!

  • I like how whenever young people like a band they feel the need to point out their age. Also, I'm 13.

  • Would make more sense if it were the other way around.

"Man, I really love TheJonas Brothers! PS I'm 64 years old."

...Actually, that just seems really creepy.

  • @ruphia

    Even more is:

"Wow, i just love Hannah Montana! PS I'm a 58 year old man."

  • She was once underaged.

    Paedophilia.

  • @AkryllicLove Same. Yesss. That's two of us! (Two of us who are 13 and not total idiots.)

  • or everyone can just keep their age to themselves nobody cares

  • @EinEdward I'm gonna have to agree with you on that one.

  • @EinEdward

Oh STFU. I was probably nearing 30 when this came out, so that means I'm older than dirt, by now. If it distresses you so much, just ignore this comment.

  • for some reason I want a rock to tie a string around and a prosthetic forehead on my real head now...

  • I finally have a plausible theory for "everybody wants prosthetic foreheads on their real heads"...it's a Star Trek convention! Actors (and cosplayers) portraying Klingons, Romulans, and various other races wear prosthetic foreheads on their real heads

  • No.

  • Could be! :D

  • its saying that everyone wants to look smarter than they really are. a prosthetic forehead makes you look like you have a bigger head. A bigger brain.

  • thanks for the insight but what about the rock and string?

  • well that is carrying the joke of the song's title further. 'We want a rock' sounds like 'we wanna rock'. It lampoons that overdone rock and roll attitude, but also reflects upon the fact that wanting to 'rock' is really just wanting to have fun, or be excited. so not only does it sound like they're saying that everybody wants to rock (then cleverly fooling the listener), but the rock and string is like a little game, its 'cheap fun'. People want to have fun, but they dont want to look stupid

  • I think I love you?

  • Well before anyone declares their love for me on youtube, i would like to first make it clear that my account name is a complete joke. and that i'm already in love. with they might be giants.

  • I never heard "we wanna rock". Also, I always considered this song to be about making the most out of life, with the string being life and the rock being something to do with yourself. As for the foreheads, I think that's about people living to work and then buy something utterly useless.

  • ur an idiot

  • in my 10 5 fave songs by them :3

  • "Yes, but being where I am. I have not found a single store that carries there works.

  • So order online or via iTunes.

  • I miss this band. Such beautiful madness.

  • They're still alive and kicking! Though mostly making childrens' albums of late.

  • yea, i remember them playing at a venue near my city this year, although i didnt get to see them :(

  • um... why miss? They're not missing. They're still going. Youtube username Particlemen

  • Not me. I usually minimize the window and just listen, because music videos are for teen-aged girls, retards, and Kanye West.

  • They can also be art, but music by itself is good too.

Just don't dis an entire artform, not really fair, ye know.

  • Since when are YouTube comments 'fair'? All I was saying is that is silly to cry that there is no video for this song. If you can't listen to a song without visuals, try looking out your window. Plenty of shiny things out there to keep yopur brain busy ;)

Yes, music videos can be very cool. Michel Gondry's videos, for instance, are amazing. But c'mon - music videos are not their own art form. They are a merging of two existing art forms - film and music.

  • Clearly they are, but you can't fault me for expecting videos from a site called YouTube.

Pandora radio is always a good choice, for the people that are just looking for something to listen to, instead of something to watch.

I still really like the song, in anycase, and it's the reason why I keep ending up back here.

  • Maybe, but I usually need something to captivate my attention while listening to music, that's why I really enjoyed Rock Band.

But maybe we're not talking about the same thing, maybe your talking about the stuff that comes on tv that ends up being so unnecessarily popular.

  • You do realize that TMBG have made a number of music videos, don't you?

  • Yes I do. And?

  • @lodestone77 actually tally hall has a good music video for "the ruler of everything"

  • @lodestone77 The music video to 'I'm Impressed' is a good one, though ...

  • @EvilEmoCupcakes

I must agree. That video creeped me right out, and was really well animated. But that little film would have been a great short film without the song, tknow? Loved that video though.

  • @lodestone77

not always. some videos are highly interpretive and could even be considered good art. actually film is an art form. now i know what you mean. alot of music videos suck donkey dick, but some are good.

  • @lodestone77

i'mma let you finish, but i watch them to :)

  • @mitchelitis12

lol 7 months later someone says something truly hilarious! XD

After this whole debate wouldn't it be hilarious if I admitted that in my weaker moments I enjoy music videos? And Kanye? Or even Kanye videos?

    Colors are pretty.

  • @lodestone77

thanks, this is my other account, i said another funny one too :)

  • @lodestone77

i'mma let you finnish, but i love music videos ;)

  • @lodestone77 Obviously, you've never seen a TMBG music video. They're fascinating.

  • @Vadergeek I have seen them all. Some of them are great. Many are clearly just not what the Johns want to be doing. But in order to market an album properly music videos are expected. Most musicians find them irritating to make. Their videos are usually good, but they are NOT music video makers! Lady Ga Ga makes videos. TMBG make music, after which they are expected to have a video.

  • @lodestone77 (not including their video releases: 'Here come the ABCs', etc.) Which are awesome. 'Here Comes Science' should be in every classroom in the world!

  • @lodestone77 Uhauhauhauhauahuha " ...And Kanye West." NICE!!!!

  • @lodestone77 so true. kanye can smd.

  • @lodestone77 Not always true. The music video is form of media in its own right and in the right hands can become an art form. String a few of them together and you get The Sound of Music or Bigger, Longer and Uncut. For instance, check out the video for I'm Impressed by They Might Be Giants which is a beautiful and meaningfull piece of artwork.

    Boom! :-)

  • @ezekieloak i completely agree songs get a whole new meaning from the videos just look a t wutshis faces shake it song

  • @lodestone77 What a closed-minded thing to say. Music videos are an artistic medium like any other form of art. Your attitude reminds me of the very incorrect attitude that 'comics are for children.'

  • @lodestone77 i would say those people are the ones that cant stand it when there is no music video, simpley enjoying them doesnt make you one of those naughty creatures

  • @lodestone77 dont forget justin beiber

  • @lodestone77 thats the stupidest thing iv heard all week music videos can be awesome
