No-one seems to have mentioned the feet. They leave the floor a lot, that just lets someone come in for an ashi barai. It has to sweep the floor so there's always contact with the floor, so no one can foot sweep him. When he yamae's, he doesn't look to the front, and doesn't cross his hands to break a possibly grab. His hips do seem a bit static too...
The head turns in this kata as done by many shotokan practitioners are as a direct result of not understanding the proper bunkai. We dont do the head turn because it does not reflect the proper application of the technique.
Very smoothly done, but I must critisize: For me, there was no where near enough head turns prior to body turns, and the punces were not powered from the hips, hips barely moved and punches looked like pushes instead. It's easy to fall out of the habbit of getting basic stuff like this spot on but for the purpose of making a video clip to put on youtube, I'd have got it perfect before showing the world (maybe thats just me) otherwise great, and a big help to anyone learning.
two reasons, it's no good feeling like you've done it right in your soul if you look like a prat bobbing up and down as you move, and waving your arms to the side instead of punching in front of you. it's easier to correct when you can see it for yourself.
secondly, many dojo's double up as floor space for other activities and/or done in a building that was originaly meant for other purposes. closed down dance studio's make great dojo's to expand into due to the layout and space. Chris.
What you "should" do varies from club to club/ style to style. Often people who say things "should" be done a certain way are unable to give a reason why.
It's white belt stuff where I go too, this was the very 1st thing I was taught. I remember standing in line watching my sensei demonstrate it on my 1st day and I though "shit, I'm never gonna remember that" lol !!
i'm doing this soon for my finals( i know finals in school) and i'm having great trouble with the turns in the middle
