How about Caffeine anhydrous, and Vassopressin? I know Vassopressin is the human anti-diuretic hormone, but I read that it also classified as a smart drug.
You know what they call “alternative medicine” That’s been proved to work? Medicine.” “So you don’t believe In ANY Natural remedies?” “On the contrary actually: Before we came to tea, I took a natural remedy Derived from the bark of a willow tree A painkiller that’s virtually side-effect free It’s got a weird name, Darling, what was it again? Masprin? Basprin? Asprin! Which I paid about a buck for Down at my local drugstore.
The scratching produces waves of higher pressure like an ultrasonic bath does. This causes molecules to hit and grow into a crystal.
Also the little spatula induces crystal formation like a seed. Similar effect can be seen in champagne (sodas, boiling water...) where bubbles always form on particles of impurity and little surface imperfections.
I'm not a chemist nor do I have any real knowledge of chemistry, but I have seen a few of your vids. This one interested me particularly as I have always found aspirin to be the most effective drug for sinus pressure headaches. I presume this is because of its anti-inflammatory effects. Mostly just glad that someone came up with this drug! Very informative video.
@afdhalatifftan92 Does it have anything to do with nucleation points? It needs a rough surface to adhere to. Once that happens other crystals can form on the micro crystals.
@afdhalatifftan92 When crystals of any sort form, they usually form around a "nucleus". This nucleus can be any bump on a surface or random particle. The particle will provide a surface for the first few molecules or atoms of the crystal to cling onto.
Once the first few molecules form on the "nucleus", the crystallization process speeds up dramatically. The process where crystals form around a nucleus is called nucleation.
@afdhalatifftan92 Because by scratching the side of the glass it seeds (produces) tiny tiny pieces of glass and also makes impurities in the glass flask in which the solution can form around the tiny glass acting as a nucleating agent thus causing the crystallisation process to occur at a faster pace, also it helps yield better results.
@afdhalatifftan92 I guess it makes a rough surface on the edge of the flask (yes, by physically scratching it). By chance, one of the microscopic pits could form the correct shape of the aspirin molecule which allows it to hold onto something. When it has something to 'hold on' to, it can begin to crystallise
@afdhalatifftan92 if i did not remember wrongly, small fragments of glass will be scratched off and the aspirin would have a surface to crystallize on instead of starting the core with the aspirin slowly bonding together
@afdhalatifftan92 It makes a tiny scratch mark on the side of the flask, it looks like a scraggly groove.
The groove is a "site" for crystallisation; the mechanisms are complex and still not completely understood, but it kinda works like this: any species in a saturate solution wants to precipitate (through crystallisation), but "doesn't know how to".
So, the groove "reminds" it how to crystallize - and reminding makes things go a lot faster than if you were to just wait!
They say that benzene alone is bad for humans (cancer). So, one of the things that makes aspirin is a benzene, and that the anti-inflammation-part of the aspirin breaks away to kill the bad things in your body (acetone), how come the remaining part - benzene-ring - is not bad, but good as you say it is on the video? i am confused. help.
This was my favorite lab in my chemistry class at my university. It was so much fun... most labs you're just seeing different process and don't get anything fun out of it like aspirin. We also made some sort of body cream... I can't recall the name of it but Lanolin was a main ingredient I'm pretty sure.
Why is the chemist saying he ads an acetal group to the molecule, when is is actually adding CH3CO? Acetal consists of a carbon and two single bonded oxigen atoms, i becames acetal after bonding to the oxigen on salicilic acid. CH3CO is derived from acetalic anhidrid (CH3CO)2O.
In chemistry we have seen that the acetate group that you put on there is needed for an other reason. @OneLifeFree How many actually grow tobacco for only themselves? I can't think of anyone I know who grows pot only for themselves (I do know people who grow pot). If you want to legally smoke pot, move to Canada, we give out fines for being caught with a doobie (bigger than the legal amount), and you can't get in trouble for being high either.
@OneLifeFree Well, while you don't need a license to grow tobacco or to brew alcohol, you DO need a license to sell it. Still looking for a satisfactory explanation on why scratching the flask induces crystallization. The professor here explains that it creates surfaces for the crystals to aggregate on, but if there were no crystals to begin with, the explanation doesn't work. Nice microwave BTW!
@EA78751: The crystalisation process begins with very small, invisible to the eye, crystals. These are formed form the aggregation of the solvated molecules, which often require a surface for the nucleation process, in order to beome a visible solid. This process accelerates and the crystals become visible as more molecules bind to the core nucleation point i,e, the small crystals become bigger, and therefore visible! If you can't see things it doesn't mean they are not there (just like air).
@FatalMissEllen: It's always wise to take precautions, and yes, I would recomend using a fume hood for phosphoric acid. We just did it on the bench to make filming easier. All chemicals are potentially dangerous, especially when mistreated.....even water!
Apart from being illegal i think the complete synthesis of THC from gallic acid wouldnt even fit into one video since its a pretty complex and long synth not easily done by putting 3 things into a microwave and crystallising it...but a video on the medical uses/ the active compounds in Cannabis (there are alot more than just the cannabinoids) would be a nice thing to see.
Nice video on Aspirin :) Hoping to see more soon. Keep it up <3
I think a video on the synthesis of THC would be as informative and entertaining as it would be useless to anyone who couldn't find the information elsewhere. The problem is likely how YouTube would feel about a video on synthesizing a widely illegal substance. A video about the medical benefits of cannabis would also be a nice addition to The PTV, but as you and I can all see it would be a sticky issue to deal with. Cannabis has medical benefits. People abuse it. Everything else is debatable.
i love this channel keep it up! the way u guys approach to the viewer is refreshing now science is less boring

@spacemonkeyjim You do know that food plants are grown outside, with unhousetrained birds flying overhead, disgusting rodents and other animals defecating on them, and bugs entering the plant so you are bound to eat some insect with every meal? A lab is the last place you should look for significant contamination.
@Pygar2 Eh! your kidding right? Rodents, birds and insects don't generally excrete the highly refined, highly toxic and/or highly radioactive elements and compounds, such as Arsenic, Polonium and Uranium, found in a chemistry laboratory, even a microgram of Polonium can kill an adult.
@spacemonkeyjim They may be found there, but not lying around to get into food. When is the last time you heard of a lab worker dying of a microgram of Polonium? When is the last time you heard of people dying from contaminated crops? Hint: "contaminated spinach". Lab people know what precautions need taking. I have never seen a bird or a rat with a hazmat label. And few labs carry what you are talking about, anyway. A lab IS the last place you should look for significant contamination.
@Pygar2 "Lab people know what precautions need taking" - yes and the precaution they take is they never eat or drink anything in the lab!
What ever the risk of the contamination of the equipment or chemicals (which is actually pretty high) the results of ingesting them can be very serious that's why they never eat or drink anything, that's the rules they came up with I don't understand why your bothering to argue this non issue.
@spacemonkeyjim Oh, for crying out loud, it's not as though stuff in lab bottles is going to leap out and crawl into your sandwich. In any case, food production plants (what I thought you meant) are not "labs" in the sense you mean; Contaminants are kept out, and they don't stock irrelevant bottles, which also don't leap and and crawl into your sandwich. But Maw Nature does *not* work to keep contaminants out... my entire point. I don't see why you are bothering to argue this nonissue.
@Pygar2 You obviously assume far too much, I said nothing about the type of lab, or gave any path of contamination. I was simply responding to the op who asked if the aspirin made in this video was save for human consumption, which of course it is not. Your the one who brought up food contamination, and the super chemicals that can magically leap from bottle to sandwich not I...
@Pygar2 ...Look its quite simple: you can never be sure who has been using the equipment you are using or for what, or weather it been properly cleaned, and even if it has been it still may harbour contaminants. Also you can not be sure if the chemicals you are using have not been contaminated ether at source or by someone else in you lab, or that the bench/spatula/lab coat/hands/etc. have not come in contact with a dangerous substance...
@Pygar2 ...That is why you don't eat or drink ANYTHING in a lab, be it Physics, Chemistry or Biology. But don’t just take my word for it hows about Dr Tang of The University of Nottingham's School of Chemistry -> watch?v=js9_EhrjDD8
@spacemonkeyjim I freely admit I misunderstood what you were driving at. But what I was driving at is that while lab or factory materials *may* be contaminated, natural food sources *are* contaminated. You seemed to be more worried about the lesser danger.
This puts me in mind of when James Randi committed "homeopathic suicide" by taking a bottle of homeopathic sleeping pills... which by definition were not contaminated by anything that would cause sleep!
I love the guy who presents this episode! He explains everything great, is really interesting and entertaining, and I can tell he's excited about his job and loves sharing it with us!
Boots shouldn't have got a mention. They moved their headquarters to Switzerland to avoid paying UK tax. Money that could have gone to the NHS or Nottingham University is now being paid to an already wealthy Swiss canton.
The "potheads" in here aren't asking for a video on how to synthesize THC, we're asking for a video on marijuana and its medical benefits (which there are plenty). It's people like you who fuel this pointless war on marijuana, people like who who have most likely never even tried it.
Look at the reaction we get by even mentioning merijuana. "POTHEAD! LOSER!" You people need to get a clue and stop regurgitating the lies you've so happily been fed.
Well I apologise... In fact I have tried it when I was younger so I know what it's like. And I didn't mean to say all of you are potheads, it's just that I have seen way too many actual potheads around here on YouTube (not especially this particular video). I'm against marijuana in the way it's being used/abused by lots of youngsters these days. If we're talking about the medical benefits I'm ok with that.
@PyroCreationZ I'm curious, not trying to start anything; You say you're against youngsters using marijuana. Are you just as against them drinking alcohol? That is by far a way bigger problem than smoking marijuana. How many deaths have you seen or hear about over-dosing on pot? I'm guessing none...and yet how many people die from alcohol poisoning and just bad decisions from drinking. Alcohol is by far the worse drug available. Which would you choose in that case? Why is 1 ok & the other not.
Actually, I am. I totally agree with you that alcohol causes far more deaths then marijuana and in way I am against it as well. As long as it's being used in a normal way I'm ok with it but as I said in my reply to Brudof I'm against it mostly because of the abuse (both marijuana and alcohol). I've seen kids barely 13yo being taken to the hospital because of alcohol abuse. But the same goes for marijuana, I see a lot of youngsters smoking it as if they're eating candy...
And no, I haven't seen someone being taken to the hospital because of smoking marijuana (not directly like when you're on a party) but it's not healthy imo if you don't need it. When I smoked in the past I noticed I lost a lot of my short memory and that I became far more leazy then normal. If we're talking about medical terms where it can help a person, by all means, use it.
For the record, no I didn't have bad experience with it :)
And I don't have intentions to provoke anything or start discussions about the subject. It's just that I have bad experience with the people (overly)using it. In terms of science, go for it.
@Brudof Marijuana is illegal to consume and sell because the government cannot make a profit on it. That is why it's illegal. Government allows sales of tobacco and alcohol, because the government makes a profit on it. And why would you want to legalize the use of marijuana? That would mean companies/people would have to pay the government for selling the drug, therefore increasing the price of it. Legalization means taxation.
@Brudof I know you want to believe that marijuana is this wonder plant that will cure the world's ills, but the truth is it's rather boring chemically. An unfortunate side effect of the anti-marijuana propaganda is the overwhelming idea that the powers-that-be are hiding something amazing.
The only thing interesting about the plant is how it makes you feel. Just enjoy it and stop telling me that "big pharma" is keeping a shitty weed from saving mankind.
@gohepcat You obviously know very little about marijuana. Hemp is one of the most useful plants on earth. It can be used for paper, food, plastic, fabric, rope, fuel, medicine and many other things. It can be harvested in a matter of months, whereas trees can take 30 years. They are very easy to grow and resilient to diseases. It is, in fact, the wonder plant.
@Brudof Thank you sure, for posting the benefits of hemp. Most people today are blind to all the extraordinary benefits of hemp because of the social taboo of marijuana. It really is a shame.
Kinda irrelevant but anyone else cringed when they heard the screechy scratching noise against the round bottom flask? NGL, I muted the video briefly because of that.
Fascinating! When will you be starting your tutorials? I'd love to go back to the basics of chem with you guys, you are very entertaining as well as educational. Well done!

is it safe to intake the lab made aspirin or is there a too big of a risk that its dirty with other unknown chemicals?
Adamstube 1 year ago
@Adamstube Lab chemicals are "reagent grade", much more pure than the industrial grade they use to make tons of stuff.
Pygar2 1 year ago
@Pygar2 I know that already, but because its made in a lab it can get contaminated with other products. Thats my fear! :)

Shouldn't you work inside a fume hood? You are working with phosphoric acid, that is a very dangerous chemical.
But a very nice video :)

FatalMissEllen 1 year ago

Ahh yes, love to see a good organic synthesis
tmmullenhevey 1 year ago
I think a video on the synthesis of THC would be as informative and entertaining as it would be useless to anyone who couldn't find the information elsewhere. The problem is likely how YouTube would feel about a video on synthesizing a widely illegal substance. A video about the medical benefits of cannabis would also be a nice addition to The PTV, but as you and I can all see it would be a sticky issue to deal with. Cannabis has medical benefits. People abuse it. Everything else is debatable.

Isf its made pure its safe.
JesusHChrist2000 1 year ago
@YamiPoyo you should NEVER eat or drink any thing in, from or made in a lab. The risk of contamination is far to high.
spacemonkeyjim 1 year ago
@spacemonkeyjim You do know that food plants are grown outside, with unhousetrained birds flying overhead, disgusting rodents and other animals defecating on them, and bugs entering the plant so you are bound to eat some insect with every meal? A lab is the last place you should look for significant contamination.
Pygar2 1 year ago
@Pygar2 Eh! your kidding right? Rodents, birds and insects don't generally excrete the highly refined, highly toxic and/or highly radioactive elements and compounds, such as Arsenic, Polonium and Uranium, found in a chemistry laboratory, even a microgram of Polonium can kill an adult.
spacemonkeyjim 1 year ago
@spacemonkeyjim They may be found there, but not lying around to get into food. When is the last time you heard of a lab worker dying of a microgram of Polonium? When is the last time you heard of people dying from contaminated crops? Hint: "contaminated spinach". Lab people know what precautions need taking. I have never seen a bird or a rat with a hazmat label. And few labs carry what you are talking about, anyway. A lab IS the last place you should look for significant contamination.
Pygar2 1 year ago
@Pygar2 "Lab people know what precautions need taking" - yes and the precaution they take is they never eat or drink anything in the lab!
What ever the risk of the contamination of the equipment or chemicals (which is actually pretty high) the results of ingesting them can be very serious that's why they never eat or drink anything, that's the rules they came up with I don't understand why your bothering to argue this non issue.
spacemonkeyjim 1 year ago
@spacemonkeyjim Oh, for crying out loud, it's not as though stuff in lab bottles is going to leap out and crawl into your sandwich. In any case, food production plants (what I thought you meant) are not "labs" in the sense you mean; Contaminants are kept out, and they don't stock irrelevant bottles, which also don't leap and and crawl into your sandwich. But Maw Nature does *not* work to keep contaminants out... my entire point. I don't see why you are bothering to argue this nonissue.
Pygar2 1 year ago
@Pygar2 You obviously assume far too much, I said nothing about the type of lab, or gave any path of contamination. I was simply responding to the op who asked if the aspirin made in this video was save for human consumption, which of course it is not. Your the one who brought up food contamination, and the super chemicals that can magically leap from bottle to sandwich not I...
spacemonkeyjim 1 year ago
@Pygar2 ...Look its quite simple: you can never be sure who has been using the equipment you are using or for what, or weather it been properly cleaned, and even if it has been it still may harbour contaminants. Also you can not be sure if the chemicals you are using have not been contaminated ether at source or by someone else in you lab, or that the bench/spatula/lab coat/hands/etc. have not come in contact with a dangerous substance...
spacemonkeyjim 1 year ago
@Pygar2 ...That is why you don't eat or drink ANYTHING in a lab, be it Physics, Chemistry or Biology. But don’t just take my word for it hows about Dr Tang of The University of Nottingham's School of Chemistry -> watch?v=js9_EhrjDD8
spacemonkeyjim 1 year ago
@spacemonkeyjim I freely admit I misunderstood what you were driving at. But what I was driving at is that while lab or factory materials *may* be contaminated, natural food sources *are* contaminated. You seemed to be more worried about the lesser danger.
This puts me in mind of when James Randi committed "homeopathic suicide" by taking a bottle of homeopathic sleeping pills... which by definition were not contaminated by anything that would cause sleep!

What's up with all these damn potheads in here?!
Nobody's going to show you how to make THC or whatever. And that's a good thing!
PyroCreationZ 1 year ago 2
The "potheads" in here aren't asking for a video on how to synthesize THC, we're asking for a video on marijuana and its medical benefits (which there are plenty). It's people like you who fuel this pointless war on marijuana, people like who who have most likely never even tried it.
Look at the reaction we get by even mentioning merijuana. "POTHEAD! LOSER!" You people need to get a clue and stop regurgitating the lies you've so happily been fed.
Brudof 1 year ago 50
@Brudof
PyroCreationZ 1 year ago 4
@PyroCreationZ I'm curious, not trying to start anything; You say you're against youngsters using marijuana. Are you just as against them drinking alcohol? That is by far a way bigger problem than smoking marijuana. How many deaths have you seen or hear about over-dosing on pot? I'm guessing none...and yet how many people die from alcohol poisoning and just bad decisions from drinking. Alcohol is by far the worse drug available. Which would you choose in that case? Why is 1 ok & the other not.
clairemarie231 11 months ago
@clairemarie231
PyroCreationZ 11 months ago
@clairemarie231
PyroCreationZ 11 months ago
@Brudof
For the record, no I didn't have bad experience with it :)
And I don't have intentions to provoke anything or start discussions about the subject. It's just that I have bad experience with the people (overly)using it. In terms of science, go for it.
PyroCreationZ 1 year ago 4
@Brudof Marijuana is illegal to consume and sell because the government cannot make a profit on it. That is why it's illegal. Government allows sales of tobacco and alcohol, because the government makes a profit on it. And why would you want to legalize the use of marijuana? That would mean companies/people would have to pay the government for selling the drug, therefore increasing the price of it. Legalization means taxation.
carlsoto1747 1 year ago
@Brudof I know you want to believe that marijuana is this wonder plant that will cure the world's ills, but the truth is it's rather boring chemically. An unfortunate side effect of the anti-marijuana propaganda is the overwhelming idea that the powers-that-be are hiding something amazing.
The only thing interesting about the plant is how it makes you feel. Just enjoy it and stop telling me that "big pharma" is keeping a shitty weed from saving mankind.
gohepcat 1 year ago
@gohepcat You obviously know very little about marijuana. Hemp is one of the most useful plants on earth. It can be used for paper, food, plastic, fabric, rope, fuel, medicine and many other things. It can be harvested in a matter of months, whereas trees can take 30 years. They are very easy to grow and resilient to diseases. It is, in fact, the wonder plant.
Legalizing marijuana would result in:
- Job creation
- Tax revenue
- Less non-violent criminals in jail
- I could go on and on...
Brudof 1 year ago
@Brudof Thank you sure, for posting the benefits of hemp. Most people today are blind to all the extraordinary benefits of hemp because of the social taboo of marijuana. It really is a shame.
