heres the truth lol, all e71s do lose signal like he said there a great phone but the attena needs to be boosted about 80% so there if you smart you make your own attena. and another problem with the e71 is if you let your phone sit there it probably gets 3g like there suppose to but if yah pike it up 0 signal! pisses me off
I just got the E71 and it does the same thing! It's so annoying that I have to put it on speaker and set it down sometimes just to make/receive calls. What's the fix?
@ts6034 There is no "fix." The antenna is on the bottom of the phone, so you simply have to avoid touching the bottom while you're using the phone. That has worked well for me.
my nokia e71 has no such problem. But my phone got wifi problems. When i am looking at videos on youtube, after a few minutes it came back to the choosing of networks. I need some help with this problem. Is it because i had installed a software that has virus that cause this problem.. Or it became crazy with nothing that happened. Please anyone reply to this msg.. please.. :)
There might be a alien probe in your hand , my nokia e71 gets really good reception everywhere I go except one little spot in alabama but in Tn & Ms & Ark i havnt ever had my bars go down all the way no matter how I hold it.
You are right !! I have exactly the same issue ! I have a E71x which I got unlocked in India and they also updated the firmware (which opened some additional options like switching the 3g off).
Also, I understand you bought the microcell to increase the signal strength. I had the same problem, I could hardly talk inside my home. I found a solution: turn the 3g off. The 3g network is much sparse as compared to the 2g network. Now my reception is pretty good. Btw I bought the phone in Aug 2009.
@acquiesce100 Sure. It's definitely not obvious. Go to Menu, Modes, Theme, then choose "Black Personal." It's sort of confusing setting these phones up properly. Personally, I like using "Active Mode" versus "Simple Mode," allowing me to customize, and switch between, two modes -- one for personal and one for work (or whatever). Each mode allows you to totally configure ring tones, wallpaper, apps, etc. Go to Menu, Settings, General, Personalization, then set "Home Screen" to "Active." Good luck
I think you have an earlier E71 produced in 2008. The devices produced after 2008 don't have remarkable reception problems because Nokia updated hardware and software. Did you try to update the firmware?

@colbolt360 If I knew that, then maybe I could solve the problem. I would have thought that touching the antenna would give me *better* reception. like it does when touching a radio antenna. No such luck. I still have this problem and can reproduce the issue at will.
Interesting. Does AT&T's network perhaps play a part in the loss of reception also? My E71 while at home in New Zealand (UMTS only network) does not suffer from this problem no matter how hard I try to replicate a 'death grip'. However, every time I travel to the US where I have a roaming agreement with AT&T (using Dual mode), I am constantly loosing signal strength and dropping service just like you are in the video.

I have the e71x (at&t's version) and yeah its an issue.
See the bottom of the phone, (below the battery cover) is the antenna, and if you cover it up, the signal goes down. I noticed it first when I could never get full bars on the phone when it is in my hands, but if I had it on the table, its not an issue.
So dont touch the bottom strip of your Nokia e71(x)
That's just stupid, maybe u r holding the phone behind something that blocks the signal and when u put it down, the signal is free. That's not a problem with the phone, we can't see the surroundings in the room in this vid. It's just stupid to make a video about that.

This happens with my E71 also. I've learned to deal with it since I bought it a year ago. I've hated this phone more and more. Still shopping around for something better.
@Kartu2 Yeah, and we didn't know about iPhone 4's reception issues before the first people actually got their hands on one, which was later than the announcement, so his video was posted about a month before we ever knew about iPhone's issues.
Yet it was perfect time to attack competitors with bogus claims. Just like Android is now attacked for "security flaws", even though there is no particular security reported for iSomethings (yet?).
What are you kidding me? Why don't you show the damn phone when you "hold it normally" ... This might very well be fake... I wana see what you do to the phone.
This is not like nokia. It has never happened to me or anyone I know despite having a poor mobile network here. Either you played with the phone/video or it was a network issue at your area BUT it cannot be the phone's fault
My E71 does this too. I got the software update for it last week hoping that this would fix the issue but nothing. Its even worse when on the net, where I usually cannot even hold the phone so i have to just rest it on my lap or a desk. Im looking at getting the iphone 4 at the end of the year when all its issues are cleaned out.
@jcostom: You are correct. I didn't learn that until later. Turns out my Microcell dropped its connection daily and required a hard reset to function again. I returned it for a full refund after two weeks due to this fact. That, and it just so turned out that I didn't qualify for the rebates, despite what the salesperson said. What a surprise, huh?
Here's my question - if this was shot while using an AT&T Microcell, as you mentioned during the first 10 seconds, why does your phone show "AT&T" as the network? When registered on a Microcell, it should say "AT&T Microcell" or "AT&T M-CELL". Our phones, N85, E72 and E75 all show "AT&T Microcell".
My Nokia N95 dropped 10 dB from -85 dBm to -95dBm. Measured by CellTrack91. Maby Nokia should also tell us how we should keep Nokia phones. N95 is old phone, maby new phones are better - or not.
@mraissam1997 No it isn't. The device loses signal RIGHT when the poster gripped it in a specific way. And later, it regained signal right after he put it back on the table. So it has nothing to do with AT&T.
And Nokia is not the best. I got a Nokia E65 that crashes randomly, "forgets" there's a SIM card all of a sudden, runs out of RAM for no reason (no apps running), freezes on the main screen, drops calls and disconnects from the network randomly. Yay Nokia!
@mraissam1997 Oh, and I forgot to mention: my carrier tried updating it. And when that didn't work, we tried to reformat it. THREE times. So really, Nokia is not the best. Not by a long shot.
It's amazing to see how bad this problem is. The iPhone 4 is getting all the bad press, but after watching a few other videos here on YouTube, it seems like lots of phones have this problem:
@bomalley You have the hold the HTC droid and Nexus one in really weird positions. The iphone 4 and e71 are the only phones experiencing the problem from natural (and advertised) hand positions.
Your problem might be related to where your home is located and to the actual phone. If you home is underneath "a rock" or in "a cave", you still might be able to receive a signal in that sweet-spot, but emediately when approacing the phone the poor thing will go deaf. Not to blame the Nokia..
@janskulainen Maybe you should watch the video again. He says he's using a microcell in his house to boost reception. It's like having a portable cell tower in your home. So he's getting plenty of signal.
Being a Nokia user since 1997,I was about to poo poo the video, but decided to test for myself. By holding in right hand & covering lower half of back of phone, signal strength frops fro -87dbm to (5 bar) to -102dbm (0 bar) and is totally repeatable, using nsysinfo to get signal level. I am in a bad signal area with reception always been problematical which maybe exacerbates the problem.
Ok is this a problem with all E71s does the problem persist outside the persons house. His phone clearly has a problem but if this is an isolated instance it can never be compared to the iPhone which is an actual design flaw which they are still refusing to acknowledge, despite going out of their way to fix it.
Looks like AT&T service quality. Don't you find it strange that only AT&T users are experiencing this phenomenon. Am from Europe and none of people I know have the same issues. Even with E71... everything is normal... hmm, makes me wonder...
I haven't had reception problems with my E71-1. "The cup" grip only makes it lose one bar. I would have to unnaturally cover both the back and front side of the bottom part to get it drop more bars.
@ReadeMoore in india, nokia rules the smartphone segement, so there really are too many of these, with my colleagues and freinds. Again, no reception problem ever.
Nokia had the iPhone 4 Deathgrip 2 years before the iPhone 4 came out!
Wow!
In reality, this problem occurs with EVERY CELL PHONE. The antenna has to be placed in the lower half of the cell phone to keep it as far away from the user's face as possible, to minimize the risk for cancer. This is mandated by the FCC. Therefore, it is easy to hold onto the bottom half of any cell phone and cause this problem.
If you used your brain, you would have tested with one or two other phone types, or gone to a proper coverage area that doesn't rely on your crappy microcell, and tried to reproduce, before claiming your E71 has an issue.
Given you're in the vast minority of E71 users, I blame the microcell signal being weak.
@gregherbert123 I second that. I don't get how iPhone fanboys are getting excited about this they would probably say it's not fair and you should only test other phones for reception problems inside a steel shipping container. If you have reception problem in that test they would call it a universal problem.
Same thing happens with my E71-1's cellular radio ever since I bought it in January 2009, though the loss of signal varies depending on how strong the signal is to begin with. Thus I've already avoided squeezing it in a cup-like grip and just grab the phone with fingers on three corners. It feels a bit problematic as there's that fear of dropping the phone but the signal degradation issue is avoided.
My E71 does the EXACT SAME THING. Haven't had that many drop calls though... so much for the iPhone 4 problems. I've had this phone for almost two years and it hasn't really been a problem.
As I stated in the video notes above, this was caused by me covering the antenna on the lower back portion of the phone, below the battery cover. Thus, one can't just cup the phone in one's hands, but instead must deliberately avoid touching that area to avoid signal loss. I didn't know this at the time I took the video. Still sucks, though.
heres the truth lol, all e71s do lose signal like he said there a great phone but the attena needs to be boosted about 80% so there if you smart you make your own attena. and another problem with the e71 is if you let your phone sit there it probably gets 3g like there suppose to but if yah pike it up 0 signal! pisses me off

@thegreatiindresh Whoa... You know someone else in your area with an e71? What are the chances!?!
ReadeMoore 1 year ago
My E71 does the EXACT SAME THING. Haven't had that many drop calls though... so much for the iPhone 4 problems. I've had this phone for almost two years and it hasn't really been a problem.

As I stated in the video notes above, this was caused by me covering the antenna on the lower back portion of the phone, below the battery cover. Thus, one can't just cup the phone in one's hands, but instead must deliberately avoid touching that area to avoid signal loss. I didn't know this at the time I took the video. Still sucks, though.

Can you do that again but zoom out to see how you're holding it and which part of the phone you deliberately cover?
