I would bet nobody has the blueprints to the Aeroplane Coaster. Stuff like that gets lost and thrown away. Even if they had the blueprints, I doubt if they would rebuild such a brutal ride. Anybody notice how high the sides of the cars come to the shoulders of the riders? And how nicely padded the seat were?
@TheTrackwalker The fred church trains were famous for their deep padding that abosorbed most of the g-forces and kept the ride comfortable and smooth. Please note, the ride was not brutal at all. It was an intense ride, but it wasn't brutal and by no means dangerous. There was alot of 'percieved danger' on this ride, but it was completely safe and wasn't punishing at all to ride
@TheTrackwalker Oh you mean like the blueprints that are in the Harry Traver book from ACE that I have? lol. Not only does it have the top down view, it has the side cut view of how the structure was made to support multiple levels of track. :)
Thanks Swampfoxer! I had the thrill of riding this fantastic coaster at Rye Playland back in 1956. It is widely considered by coaster enthusiasts to have been the greatest wooden coaster ever built. It was built in 1927 and demolished in 1958. In answer to frecklecheeks101, it was demolished because many people found it to be too terrifying (it was a physically brutal ride) and the maintenance was very expensive. But I will never, ever forget it!
@fdmurphy It was taken down because the new insurers said it needed $100,000 worth of work done on it to make it structurally sound. The park couldn't afford it and were therefore forced to demolish the ride. Are there any coasters around today which match it, in your view? :)
@AdrenalineAddict610 My sources say that either Viacom, CBS, or Cedar Fair (or even another company entirely!) posses the blueprints now. Paramount Parks owned the blueprints, and they were considering building it instead of Son of Beast.
Rode the Airplane Coaster many times between 1954 and 1957. The first drop was a killer but it wasn't until about the third drop that one could compare stomach sensations to the Dragon Coaster's first. I can't remember if it was the second or third drop that was on a heavily banked steep spiral that came alongside the coaster loading station. Each time the train came by, waiting passengers would wonder, do I really want to this? Rye hasn't been the same attraction for me since.
You're so luck to have ridden this. Question, I've heard over and over that there was a tunnel at the bottom of the first drop, and have never seen any documentation of this, then I notice on this video that it appears there wasn't a tunnel at the bottom of the first drop. Can you confirm this please? Thanks!
I wish the people behind Playland would emphasize its history more to get some people up there who appreciate its charms. Long live the Dragon! See you all soon!!
Tare down The Dragon Coaster and rebuild The Aeroplane.Love the old footage. I was born a few years after they tore down this ride. The county"s insurance made them tare down the coaster.
@derf62172 No ! I may be to young to have seen or ride the Aeroplane but The Dragon Coaster is part of my childhood. I say they should take down a crappy ride and built the Aeroplane.
Thank you a million times swampfoxer, never thought I would see footage of this legendary coaster. Can't belive they closed it becuase it was too dangerous of something like that. It looked amazing.

@americangirldoll4321 This looks nothing like the Dragon Coaster. The turns are different, it's moving faster and goes in an opposite direction.

Rye should rebuild it. Blueprints still exist, and it would become an instant hit.
