    I am currently training as a Punter for my american football team.

    I bought this book written by a very famous punter, Ray Guy, and it said that i should be doing plyometrics once I had reached a certain level of strength and elasticity.

    I wanted to verify with you guys if it is true that plyometric exercises indeed benefit athetletic performance by enchancing speed and strength at the same time.

    Plyo training may be a little old fashioned, but still a "Gold Standard" for excellent athletic performance.

    It's tough, but when done right, it can train you to jump higher, run faster and go longer in whatever you do.

    That's why Shaun T of Insanity and Tony Horton of P90X use it in their DVD's for people who are serious about improving their fitness!

    Far better than steady state cardio. Plyo training burns 3 times more calories in shorter time!

  • @mtavares92 Plyometrics forces your muscles to use power and strength. Unlike static cardio like running which is boring, plyo is intense and techniques change rapidly.

    Be cautious, it's higher impact and if done incorrectly it can be murder on your joints, especially your knees.  Do not do plyometrics everyday, it's best every other day because your joints will need the break, otherwise you'll wear yourself out too quickly and can cause some serious injury. I also recommend joint supplements.

  • Except for the fact that "Plyometrics" is a misnomer here. "plyometrics" is defined by maximum power output exercises due to muscles being loaded then contracted in rapid sequence to tap into strength, elasticity and innervation of the muscle in order to produce substancial gain in the desired training goal (strength, speed, intensity...). What is being shown here (and in 99% of the fitness videos out there) is simply NOT plyometrics due to a faulty protocol.

  • The best thing to do is deadlift/squat/and clean heavy. Get your strength/explosiveness up and then focus on doing these plyometrics.

    Or do both at same time. Plyos are really for athletes who have hit the peak and need to get an extra 1-2 inch more.

    yes but your supposed to land on the balls of your feet then quickly go flat footed so you can take the impact.

  • I thought plyo was about lengthening the muscle followed immediately by a contraction. I didn't see that in the first jump, where the quad muscle rested before the jump.

  • im a gymnast and we have to do plyo (thats what we call it) over panel mats once a week for about 15-20 minutes, its really hard but its great for cardio

    I'm sure it'll work great for women wanting to tone up a bit, but...

    the whole point of plyometrics is an explosive nature, which generally means minimum contact time with the floor possible. Which is oh-so-not demonstrated here... Exercises are all beneficial, but really need to up the intensity and push for speed.

  • Simple body weight exercises. Definitely not Plyometrics.

    Plyometrics are supposed to set off a myotatic reflex. No way that is happening here.

    Still, good basic beginner type body weight exercise for those just getting started.

  • That isn't necessarily true. "boobs" are made up of fat and muscle some women have more fatty tissue and others more muscular tissue. When you lose weight (fat weight not water weight) you will lose the some of the fat in your breasts but not all of it and proportionally you probably won't notice a difference. You may even like them better because as you tone all the muscles in that region your breats will begin to look "perkier".

  • If you lose all your bodyfat then yeah, the boobs will probably get a bit smaller but there's no need to do so if it's already at a healthy level.

  • Yah, halfway to being proper plyometrics. It's the workout class version of plyometrics. Would still be a good workout though. Proper plyo would be too much for nice hot ladies like these to do on a regular basis.

  • It's okay, but you don't want to do this everyday. Too much jumping (jumping exercises) can cause you to be prone to injury of your knees, ankles, and/or hips. Maybe 1 or 2 times a week this might be okay. So, it's probably not a good idea to do everyday. Still do some walking and jogging for cardio or swimming.

  • Plyometrics has specific benefits that other forms of exercise don't provide.

  • these aint plyos they are power endurance exercise done without any intensity.The girl is too cute but is mistaken abou plyos.

  • Nice vid, I'm a personal trainer and I understand that we need to keep our clients motivated with new exercises, plyometrics at this level is good. However, these videos should explain regressions and progressions with these exercises, a lot of people have bad knees.

  • sinjinthule and rogerfe are absolutely right. This stuff is sued for sports like lacrosse and basketball and other things that you would require speed and agility. A football RB would be a good example. It should not be sued for overweight moms trying to drop a few lbs. They would be much better off walking.

  • This girl doesn't know anything. You DO NOT use plyometrics for cardio--if you do you're risking injury. Plyometrics are used to develop speed/rate of force, and they have to be done explosively, not like this.

  • One more crucial distinction: Plyometrics, properly done, are NOT a form of aerobic execise. They'll sure burn calories. but they work on fast-twitch muscle fibers & are more correctly defined as extended anaerobic exercise--basically the same effect as running a long sprint (200m or 400m) or pushing through a short-break/no-break 30-45 minute weight workout. Very different beast.

  • I understand this is a demonstration video but anyone who really wants to get serious benefits from this form of exercise needs to go full bore. Plyometric routines shouldn't run longer then about 20 minutes but they do need to be run full throttle. Protecting the joints and lower back from repetitive motion damage IS crucial...
