Hey thanks guys, I was just trolling videos and I came across this. Because of this video I was able to add a new song to my beginner guitar repitoire.(It's a rocket widget the cans are much better they have a nitrogen canister inside that opens when you crack it, no shaken up foam like the bottles)
Good version. Not by Bob Marley though... it seems (not you though) that people think that any reggae song they don't know the original artists of, they automatically think it's bob marley because he's the most famous...lol
im fucking loving the hell out of this song!! and you guys do it really well.... i play the guitar and to me it sounded like ur guitar play was pretty good! that twat below is dumb shit hah
Great job!! I love sublime and this song. I just covered this song and added it to my page. Check it out and let me know what you think. I put my own lil spin on a few parts..
During Hebrews bondage: By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion. For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion. How shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land? Bible Psalm 137
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. Psalm 19:14
don't we sort of choose what lessons we learn, and to what pace we learn them? conquering bigotry of all sorts involves facing one's own prejudices, then choosing to ascend above them; and furthermore choosing to understand and help those who haven't yet done so, rather than judge rashly. i've appreciated this, when truly humbled before witnesses... sorry, rewind.
it's a pretty decent version of a good cover of an amazing song (eh?). looks like you had fun with it; keep it up! peace and love!
So I'm gonna take a lesson on 'political correctness' from a person that called me nigger.....As well....nothing politically incorrect in saying 'white skinned' since it's not derogatory.
The song is originally by The Melodians in 1972 (the original lyrics are from the bible [psalm 137:1]). Boney M's version in 1978 is more famous but the lyrics were changed to be more popular.
@XynyX12 "Boney M's version in 1978 is more famous but the lyrics were changed to be more popular." Well, you can also say that Boney M changed the lyrics back to be much more faithful to the real Original. :)
To my understanding, Babylon refers to the modern western world and Zion refers to the origination of Rastafarianism, mainly Kenya. I'm pretty sure the song signifies how people we're taken away from Zion (slavery or for other reasons) and are remenisent of it.
2) writen by a Jewish poet and passed down to the masses as Psalms 137. It is quite possibly one of the most beautiful and inspiring peaces of religious poetry ever writen
The song was written by Brent Dowe, and originaly recorded by him and the Melodians in 1972...Fumes1989, i guess we can put you in your own category of "stupid youtube commenter fucks"?
"Rivers of Babylon" is a song written and recorded by Brent Dowe and Trevor McNaughton of The Melodians in 1972. It is based on the Biblical hymn Psalm 137, a hymn expressing the yearnings of the Jewish people in exile following the Babylonian conquest of Jerusalem in 586 BC. The rivers of Babylon are the Euphrates river, its tributaries, and the Chebar river. The song also has words from Psalm 19:14"(Wikipedia)
I dont know if you have the King James Version of the Bible, but your 19:14 looks more like 19:13 with different wording then the Bible, 19:14...So let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer...the song cuts off to say O Vrie which is french for O True...Yes good cover!!!
Interesting, I have the Jewish Publication Society (JPS) version of the Hebrew Bible. I was wondering why the song was just a little different. The JPS version is translated to English from Hebrew, whereas the King James version was translated from Hebrew to Greek to English. The Greek is evident in the lyric, "How can we sing King Alpha's song in a strange land?" Alpha being the first letter of the Greek alphabet.
It seems if I only read Psalms 19 a little more...Psalms 19.15 May the words of my mouth and the prayer of my heart by acceptable to You, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.
So, really they are just a little off from each other because of the translations. I wonder how it comes out in some of the other publications out there?
can you not read? The Melodians song rivers of babylon is not the same as what's in the bible. Yes there is excerpts from the bible in the song but it is not the exact same.

What gets me is how black people can't get over the slavery of their people.. although it didn't happen to anyone they know.
Not to mention the whites have forgotten about the thousand of years of slavery that they have been through... hmm
f123u456c789k 2 years ago
By this argument , the Whites didn't learn a thing from 'their ancient enslavement'.
What doesen't 'get you' is that , though slavery in N.America is done and over with...The residual colonial mentality isn't.

Why would you even try to talk to me if all you have to say is that im racist.
Uh oh im a little racist hold the phone!
So is everyone else.. whether you say it or not we are ALL a little racist.
In fact by saying the words "white skinned" means you are truly racist.. because the politically correct term is "Caucasian"
