  • Bob never issued an official recording of this, you're thinking of the version by Boney M

  • It didn't go anywhere.

  • It was The Melodians. What do you mean by Sublimes version? If you mean its shitty, you're right.

  • Fucking Boney M not Marley! Jesus

  • awaffa2003 hey um bobmarley did do this song just so u know

  • very good job

  • haha drunk america's got talent

  • I love how people automatically think Bob Marley sang every old reggae song out there...

  • @awaffa2003 he at least did a cover of this cause i have seen a live version on him singing this

  • Apperantly someone didnt bother learning the lyrics before playing it, no hating, other than that good job.

  • damn guys this is nice

  • the best version of this song has to be by BoneyM :d

  • its from the bible....anyway, good job guys

  • Good version. Not by Bob Marley though... it seems (not you though) that people think that any reggae song they don't know the original artists of, they automatically think it's bob marley because he's the most famous...lol

  • @666jimmysmusicgirl bob marley is in the melodians.............

  • @666jimmysmusicgirl (sarcasm)

  • *Institute Of Human Cultivation*

During Hebrews bondage: By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion. For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion. How shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land? Bible Psalm 137

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. Psalm 19:14

  • pretty sure it comes from the bible buddy

  • It was Boney M, I think who wrote this song

  • no. its an old slave / rastafarian song. I think it was first recorded by the melodians. But its been done a lot and definitely before Boney M

  • actually it's based on Psalm 137 in the Bible. and I believe The Melodians first played it.

  • don't we sort of choose what lessons we learn, and to what pace we learn them? conquering bigotry of all sorts involves facing one's own prejudices, then choosing to ascend above them; and furthermore choosing to understand and help those who haven't yet done so, rather than judge rashly. i've appreciated this, when truly humbled before witnesses... sorry, rewind.

it's a pretty decent version of a good cover of an amazing song (eh?). looks like you had fun with it; keep it up! peace and love!

  • dude youre an idiot spell bradley the right way goof

  • Dang, not just good looking, but good with the music. Kudos! Bradley Nowell would be flattered by your cover of his cover. Good job.

  • damn lol the guy couldnt even find the camera hahaha

  • the guy playin guitar kinda looks like ricky gervais. neat!

  • james is drunk :D:D:D:D

  • 1:51 hehe...

  • What gets me is how black people can't get over the slavery of their people.. although it didn't happen to anyone they know.

Not to mention the whites have forgotten about the thousand of years of slavery that they have been through... hmm

  • By this argument , the Whites didn't learn a thing from 'their ancient enslavement'.

What doesen't 'get you' is that , though slavery in N.America is done and over with...The residual colonial mentality isn't.

  • oh really? so the jews didn't learn anything from the halocaust?

    Get over yourself nigger.

  • I'm white skinned. And by your response...No I don't think much was learned....as your racist attitude shows.

  • Why would you even try to talk to me if all you have to say is that im racist.

Uh oh im a little racist hold the phone!

So is everyone else.. whether you say it or not we are ALL a little racist.

In fact by saying the words "white skinned" means you are truly racist.. because the politically correct term is "Caucasian"

  • So I'm gonna take a lesson on 'political correctness' from a person that called me nigger.....As well....nothing politically incorrect in saying 'white skinned' since it's not derogatory.

  • in fact, i called you "A nigger" maybe you need some english lessons.

    Proper sentence structure is key.

  • talking to you is like talking to a table.

  • a brick wall even.

  • oke ..LOL ..that too.

  • Well, a jewish man penned it over 2000 years ago. i dont think you should tell a white man what he should and shouldnt sing.

  • @armyvent

I didn't tell anyone what they should or shouldn't do. Merely stating an opinion.

  • Comment removed

  • You Idiot, this was written by a white man thousands of years ago. Read your Bible! This song is the story of the Jews being enslaved not the blacks.

    Classic ignorance...

  • @Thalium77

Thalium, why is it your opinion that a "white man" shouldn't sing this?

  • Booney M did it

  • The song is originally by The Melodians in 1972 (the original lyrics are from the bible [psalm 137:1]). Boney M's version in 1978 is more famous but the lyrics were changed to be more popular.

  • Really, I never new that, thanks :)

  • @XynyX12 "Boney M's version in 1978 is more famous but the lyrics were changed to be more popular." Well, you can also say that Boney M changed the lyrics back to be much more faithful to the real Original. :)

  • @XynyX12 actually, the first musical version of psalm 137:1 is coming from rastafarian groundations. Played with drums.

  • @XynyX12 A Prayer for Revenge

  • good good

  • I thought you guys did a cool job on this song

  • this is an old old song

  • it was the melodians! pretty good guitar playing

  • a lot of these lyrics are from the book of psalms in the holy bible.

  • Do u guys even know what that song means? The depth that it signifies?

Ps 137:1 - "By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion."

Do you even know who the "WE" is that this speaks of??

  • To my understanding, Babylon refers to the modern western world and Zion refers to the origination of Rastafarianism, mainly Kenya. I'm pretty sure the song signifies how people we're taken away from Zion (slavery or for other reasons) and are remenisent of it.

Could be wrong though, feel free to correct me.

  • Bonny M recorded this in 1978

  • two of the gayest people.

  • It's from the Bible, bro. Not Bob Marley.

  • He's talking about who made the song. Not where the title came from.

  • guitarist cant play or sing. atleast he drinks decent beer

  • drunk people noises normally don't sound so pleasant. good job.

  • You guys sound great!

  • It's very good

    Josee from Repentigny, Quebec

  • the melodians song this song

  • 2 things,

    1) good rendition

    2) writen by a Jewish poet and passed down to the masses as Psalms 137. It is quite possibly one of the most beautiful and inspiring peaces of religious poetry ever writen

  • Really nice recording, guys. Spot on harmonies. And guiness just happens to be my second favorite beer.

  • first recorded by melodians!

  • actually you dumbasses. it was king david who wrote this song, the greatest fucking king ever.

  • Linda Ronstadt recorded this song in 1976.

  • Linda Ronstadt did this song in 1976. Her version is great!

  • actually this hymm is psalms 137 the great king david wrote this

  • The song was written by Brent Dowe, and originaly recorded by him and the Melodians in 1972...Fumes1989, i guess we can put you in your own category of "stupid youtube commenter fucks"?

  • You guys are really good!

  • holy fuck, its music quit bringing religion into this shit

  • you are awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!i love you!!!!!!

  • pretty good !!!

  • nice

  • Read PSALMS 19:14 and 137:1,3-4 and you have your song....

  • and from willful sins keep Your servant; let them not dominate me then shall I be blameless and clear of grave offense. Psalms 19.14

What does Psalms 19.14 have to do with this song? It is based on Psalms 137, as far as I can tell, only Psalms 137.

In any case, pretty good cover.

  • "Rivers of Babylon" is a song written and recorded by Brent Dowe and Trevor McNaughton of The Melodians in 1972. It is based on the Biblical hymn Psalm 137, a hymn expressing the yearnings of the Jewish people in exile following the Babylonian conquest of Jerusalem in 586 BC. The rivers of Babylon are the Euphrates river, its tributaries, and the Chebar river. The song also has words from Psalm 19:14"(Wikipedia)

  • I dont know if you have the King James Version of the Bible, but your 19:14 looks more like 19:13 with different wording then the Bible, 19:14...So let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer...the song cuts off to say O Vrie which is french for O True...Yes good cover!!!

  • Interesting, I have the Jewish Publication Society (JPS) version of the Hebrew Bible. I was wondering why the song was just a little different. The JPS version is translated to English from Hebrew, whereas the King James version was translated from Hebrew to Greek to English. The Greek is evident in the lyric, "How can we sing King Alpha's song in a strange land?" Alpha being the first letter of the Greek alphabet.

  • It seems if I only read Psalms 19 a little more...Psalms 19.15 May the words of my mouth and the prayer of my heart by acceptable to You, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.

  • So, really they are just a little off from each other because of the translations. I wonder how it comes out in some of the other publications out there?

  • what is this? ametur hour?

  • Yes it is amateur hour...for spelling it seems!

  • the song was written by King David on his harp as a gentle complaint to God while taken into slavery by the

Babylonians... truly mystical. the first blues song.

  • Wasn't bob marley, the popular rendition that sublime took from was The Melodians in 1972 but their vocals are just Psalm 137 from the bible.

  • dark beer makes my penis jump

  • "rivers of babylon" is the oldest song in the world, no one kno's who wrote it, thats why its soo special

  • can you not read? The Melodians song rivers of babylon is not the same as what's in the bible. Yes there is excerpts from the bible in the song but it is not the exact same.

  • um i belive king david of israel wrote it some 3000 years ago. its in the book of psalms in the bible. thats before bonnie m , and the melodians

  • The main verse is in the bible yes, but it is not the same as the song. They are a little different

  • This song was written and performed by the Melodians..
