I think that in primary schools kids should be given healthy food mostly, with chips maybe only once a week. But in high school they should be allowed to choose what they want to eat, they should have good healthy options though. Not every teenager wants chips for every lunchtime, especially canteen chips....
I completely agree with you, I don't understand why people seem so supportive of limiting EVERYONE (this is not just about the food issue, btw) just because some are too weak and don't have the intelligence to say NO to certain things. For the record, I eat junk food on a daily basis, I have for years. Because I LIKE IT. The school systems here implemented the whole "take out the junk food" thing, and it didn't work, at least at mine. Kids just have their parents bring them pizza at lunch, etc.
Watch the series! It's not about Jamie trying to ban junk food, and it's not about a 'nanny state'. You can't rely on children as young as five to choose a healthy option the majority of the time, when there is pizza/chips/flavoured-milk etc. as an option every single day!
@wejmiller Children that young should be monitored by adults when they're eating, don't you think? Parents affect what their children do and do not eat, and it's THEIR fault if their kid eats too much unhealthy stuff. She's speaking more about stuff like this going on in middle and high schools. If kids don't have healthy eating habits by then, the schools limiting what snacks they make available has no effect whatsoever. They'll just have their parents buy it for them before or after school.
to be honest laura i totally agree with you, im 17 years old and im my college all ther is is a water machine although we are aloud to go out to the food courts and things at dinners we get lectured on what is/isnt good for us, as a girl who doesnt do any other sport than running for the bus i agree that we need to get more active nut not litterally forced to do 8 hours a week i do hope you understand that jamie oliver is a good man its the "do=gooders" that take the choccy! not him\
Here, here ma'am! :) I don't know if it's quite to the same extent over there in England, but in America, the government has really control over too much. With the system of electoral colleges, we aren't even technically voting for presidents. There goes all the democracy we're known so well for! If people want to make bad decisions and kill their body with McDonald's every day, then let them!!! I want my damn chocolate bar!!! :)
Schools should have an obligation to provide healthy, balanced meals and in turn promote a healthy attitude to eating. After all, it is where kids spend a large part of their life! Some people like Laura see snacks like chocolate or crisps for what they are...an occassional treat and that's fine and harmless but others see them as regular food and the obesity epidemic is the result. Schools providing healthy meals is not the problem. Wider society and in particular, parents, are!
I just restarted school...and lunch sucks. When they say they are gonna cut out unhealthy food,at our school that means everything. We have health smoothies, milk, and water to drink (I miss my tea) and our cookies are now oatmeal raisin. Salads, whole grains...its ridiculous.
One of my favorite things about lunch was going and getting something unhealthy because it was a treat in the middle of a stressful day. Now I don't even get enough food to eat, and don't focus in classes b/c i'm hungry!
Laura, I completely agree with you....the government should not try to control what we eat, or how much we eat. All the "healthy eating" is doing nothing except promote and encourage companies to create products at a smaller amount for a bigger price product. And "over-weight" doesn't mean "unhealthy." It is really unfair that they are trying to make us all look alike...when they promote us to be ourselves.
They did the healthy eating change when I was in high school too. They took about half of the chips and chocolate bars out of the vending machines and replaced them with FRUIT. wtf. If I see a BANANA sitting in a vending machine I'm definitely going to avoid it like the plague because I have no idea how long it's been sitting there. They also added really gross salads at the cafeteria, but they didn't change the rest of the food. The just doubled the price. A lot of kids just didn't eat lunch.
The only way one can be on Palin's side of the argument it is if you're ignorant regarding her politics or just plain fucking ignorant. Here's the solution for the chocolate bars annoyingly hyper chick, just don't have any chocolate bars, period. Aspartame, which is the sweetener used in diet sodas are known carcinogenics, so if you're diabetic, drink tea, water, or something else without sugar, unless you're looking into bleeding to death while they extract your tumor in the future.
"I'm 21 and I don't like salads!" All I learned from this video is that there are morons in England too. Very few people like salads, people eat healthy for the same reason they don't jump off airplanes without a parachute - because they want to live longer.
You sounded like a bit of a young tory when you said 'Nanny State' but apart from that I agree with you.
Even though Sarah Palin is saying that because she's a filthy libertarian who would be happiest on a ranch with a shotgun screaming about the government coming to take her hard earned money away.
SARAH PALIN ...is a radical right ZIONIST CHRISTIAN ....and she is a huge traitor too the united states of America!! under U.S. law she has committed HIGH TREASON!
I have to say that while yes, we can certainly think for ourselves and there is a little bit much of having things pushed at us (UK/US) as of late, I think there should still be options for both. Some kids really do care about "eating healthy" and all that. But yeah, I'd rather reach for a bag of crisps than a piece of celery any day. :P
I also think that forcing the unsporty kids to do exercise, schools cause them to feel inadequate and put them off sport because of the way that it's forced on them. I know I'm not at all sporty, but I do dance and drama which keeps me perfectly fit; there are other ways to be healthy than eating lettuce and cross country running.
I agree, but thats soley because ive been very lucky, I eat loads of junk food but somehow never got fat. Im now in my late 20's and weigh around 83kg's, which for a 6ft 2 male aint bad. eat what you like. If it makes you fat, decide which you like more, being thin or eating junk food. Simple
Dont forget its about education as well. most kids in america dont know where honey comes from. one kid said it came from bears........am mean, ha way man. thats some bad shit. having the knowledge is the key. then do what you want or feed your kids crap food. what does your mammy n daddy feed you? ha ha
I'm horribly ashamed to say that I de-prioritized your actual rant in favour of being completely attracted to your fast-paced talking... Sorry, but you look insanely cute when you're on to a passionate subject :}
Laura did you watch Jamie Oliver's show on school dinners in America? This isn't about what is nice for the kids and it isn't about just removing junk food from the school, its a matter of life and death now. Unless we start to change something its going to get very bad.
Oh bravo, captain melodrama. As long as we completely remove all junk food from schools, kids will never get junk food and won't ever die. What's next? Banning sales of junk food in corner shops to people under 18? Please.
" As long as we completely remove all junk food from schools, kids will never get junk food and won't ever die"
-
Except no one says that, least of all me. Way to go caricaturing my position, is that all you have?. Did you know that a bill past recently makes PIZZA TOPPING A VEGETABLE and therefore in schools they can serve pizza as a vegetable.
while I appreciate how enthusiastic you are about this issue, just because you're not obese doesn't mean you're healthy. As a medical student, I can tell you that these things do catch up on you. one might look thin, but who knows if their arteries are clogging up, or they're becoming insulin resistant.
and again, I am not a big fan of sport either but the idea of these government health campaigns is to encourage people to become more active, because I'm sure you'll agree- our lives are very
But I do agree that unhealthy food is delicious and there isn't anything wrong with a chocolate bar or chips every now and then. definitely not everyday though. Another point where I disagree is healthy food CAN be tasty! like pasta with beans/leaves. that's healthy. healthy doesn't necessarily = salad.
just sayin', I do love your videos though. not a hater. have been watching since 2007!
Hmm... I guess I would agree to an extent. I think the main problem, rather than their amount of sugar or fat, is how processed school dinners are. There are probably loads of different dinners that unfit kids would love to eat that could be healthy for them as well, but they're not getting made at schools 'cos they're far too expensive and take too long for the dinnerladies to cook.
Agreed. I eat lots of junk food and have a real problem putting on weight or looking worse off for it. But even if I did, eating junk food with the rest of my diet just isn't a bad thing! (Although I think SP is a wally)
im sorry but you should never be on the same side as Sarah Palin. Shes an absolute nutcase who still thinks the world was made by god and believes that Obama is a terrorist. No matter what the topic, never side with her. other than that I agree with you in some respect
agreed! all these campaigns and the emphasis on what is or isn't good for you makes me feel bad if i feel like eating chocolate sometimes. everything in moderation!
Prepare to be pleasantly surprised: I agree with you.
Stop all the extreme regulations of food and alike (including drugs). I eat healthy, don't do drugs, and do sports. But I still think I, like everyone else, should get the option to choose what they put into their body.
and by drawing attention to overweight people are we saying that its healthier to be skinny and have health problems in the other direction, such as anorexia/bulimia? in the 50's most of the pin up girls were a size12- 14... And I for one dont think theres anything wrong with that!
Although i think that obesity is a problem, i totally agree with you. I think that its perfectly fine to eat that chocolate bar, or the chinese takeaway, as long as its done in moderation. If parents are worried about what their kids eat, then send a pack up with them to school, instead of giving then loads of money to buy junk food, or make sure that they eat healthily at home. After a certain age people should be able to make these decisions for themselves...
You summed it up at the end. It isn't eating healthy they are teaching the children at school its just teaching them to hate school lunches. Taking something away from a teenager just makes them want it more. Eventually everyone learns what works best for their body, and obesity is a person's own fault not the school lunch's fault.
I see your point, but if I may ask... have you ever eaten lunch at an American school cafeteria? I haven't ever eaten at an English school, but I'm going to venture and say that there's a high chance that the two are quite different. I try my hardest not to eat school food because the choices are extremely limited, and usually pretty gross (not just unhealthy).
But I do agree about the annoying advertisements trying to get everyone to do sports. Fitness should be self-motivated.
Sounds like your school had good intentions, just managed poorly. The chocolate bar thingy should obviously have been rationed to one per person. And fizzy drinks are pretty bad.
I suppose the best solution would be to limit the fat kid's diets whilst letting skinny ones eat what they want, but of course that's discrimination so rather the skinny kids starve as a result.
Oh and more of you in the sexy librarian glasses Laura, mmmm
I totally agree with you! i am not sporty at all and even though my school has changed to healthy eating the food has just got so bad that they serve about 5 portions or rice and potato with each meal, even if the meal already involves rice and potato. i like to eat crap food :D
Fat kids are gonna be fat kids, sporty kids are gonna play sports. As long as fat kids know why they're getting fat, I have no problem letting the fatness continue.
@TalkerOne and the very last thing I will say to you is that I wanted McCain to win the 2008 election. I preferred McCain to Obama. I do not like Obama. I believe both parties are ridiculous, and no matter who is in office, all members are generally not going to keep their promises, and as long as both sides bash the other side, this country will be divided, and I hope you will stop assuming people are on the left, just because they dislike one of your politicians.
@TalkerOne then cull wolves in Alaska through shooting them down in helicopters. Yes, I realize that most people do not see wolves and humans as comparable forms of life, but I do. 3, I believe it proved her untrustworthy to publish a book bashing McCain after they lost to Obama in the 2008 election. To work so closely with and endorse McCain and then turn against him seems wrong to me. I am aware that distancing herself from him is beneficial, but it was near betrayal. There, top 3 reasons, >
@TalkerOne And I despise the fact that the constant left-right struggle has divided our country and made us look like complete fools. I will tell you my simple reasons for disliking Palin, and then will not allow our discussion to spam Laura's video anymore. 1, I find it wrong that a politician would get make a personal show, "Sarah Palin's Alaska." Pushing politics into reality TV is not something that should happen, no matter who does it. 2, I find it hypocritical for her to be pro-life and >>
@miakitty91 (resoumed) The wolf population gets out of hand in Alaska & if they are not hunted game will be wiped out and wolves will encroach on towns, killing pets, livestock and even sometimes people. Palin's book did not bash McCain, although some of his handlers like Schmidt were unethical and attacked her first to try and shove off blame for his bad work. Your comments verify that you have not done your homework & demonstrate why my original observation continues to be correct. TY
totally agree with you. Government is getting to involved in my ruling my life. I believe you should be able to eat what you want, as long as your doing something healthy. I've lost a lot of weight just be going to dance class, yet my diet hasn't change.
(continued/ last) - Sarah Chaired the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Comm. Chaired the National Governor’s Association Natural Resources Comm. Served two terms on the City Council and two terms as Mayor. Chaired the Alaska Conservation Comm. Presided over the Alaska Conference of Mayors. So by all means Miakitty ONLY a "fruitloop" can do all this in your eyes. My comment on your statement didn't rise to the level of a dare, it wasn't even a stretch.
@TalkerOne Honestly, yes, even a fruitloop can do all that. These will be my last comments unless you can answer this one question: how have you NOT assumed to know something about me just by reading a comment I have made, just as you have assumed that I follow the media without doing any homework of my own. Is it only possible to dislike Sarah Palin if you haven't done any homework? Must you be a member of the left in order to dislike her? Honestly, all I see with you is a left-hating right. >>
@miakitty91"All I see is left hating right." you say. But I am not the one calling people names am I? You say you cannot understand why someone can be pro-life and hunt. Well you see, she eats, therefore she hunts. Humans are not the same as animals. Humans are made in God's image, animals are not and that is just for starters. I find it amusing that someone who cannot understand a simple concept like that is trying to lecture me. ----> continued -
(from previous)Under Sarah's watch Alaska invested $5 billion in state savings, overhauled education funding, and implemented the Senior Benefits Program that provides support for low-income older Alaskans. She Developed a competitive process to construct a gas pipeline which languished for decades and is the largest state financed infrastructure project in US History. oh Miakitty there is still more --->
(from previous) Was it that Sarah implemented a plan to begin weening the state off federal "earmarks".** Was it that she cut Alaska's Medicaid backlog by 83%.**Was it that she was able to pass sweeping ethics reforms and reform a state contract bidding process that was rigged and controlled by cronies? - Continued ---->
Laurbubble - brilliant. You have just figured out the American left. They make a "policy" and cry "WERE SAVED!" without any regard for the unintended consequences of their policy. The policy usually makes matters worse as you have so eloquently described. Usually the policies they make for the "public good" increase the stock of one of their contributors, or stick it to those who donate to the other party. The more the planner's plans fail the more the planners plan.
Additionally, in the U.S., between 16-33% of children and adolescents are obese. If you are not among this population, that's great, but we must make considerations for the rest who may not have been instilled with the right dietary and lifestyle habits from a young age. This number may seem low, but as this population ages, it poses a huge burden not only upon the individuals' health but upon society and the healthcare industry that supports us all.
Jamie Oliver NEVER said children should never be allowed to indulge in sweets and snacks. His is a general initiative to increase the variety and availability of healthy, nourishing foods into the diets of youth. The foods that are readily available to children in school DO shape their eating habits both inside and outside of school. Public health initiatives that merely promote the welfare of our population do not make a nanny state. No one is infringing upon your right to eat what you want.
Also, just because people eat junk food and do minimal physical activity but stay thin doesn't mean it works for everyone. Every person's body and metabolism are different, so you really can't generalize the situation.
Added note: props for expressing what you actually believe on the matter. You also made me post my first "serious" comment on YouTube in years, so...yeah, I feel like a douchebag who wants to start a political debate on the internet. I applaud you.
I think that measures to improve the "healthiness" of food in lunchrooms are just as necessary as measures many countries took years ago to set standards for the workplace, animal/human treatment, etc (example: requiring that a building have lead-free paint is not a limit on our "freedom"; it's a measure to make sure that we are safe, and in a way this advances our freedom). I look at this bill as just another way to make sure that children are being offered the resources that they need.
In America, obesity among children is a serious issue, especially among socially disadvantaged minorities. Many children have little guidance at home on how to eat to be healthy, so I think it's necessary for schools to take action. Rates of type two diabetes in children are increasing exponentially. This is absolutely an epidemic that cannot be ignored. It's easy to say that a chocolate bar is harmless, but the food available in schools instills lifelong eating habits in children.
I agree with you when it come's to 16-17 year old's, they can obviously make informed discussions for themselves. But younger children, especially below 5 should not have the choice and this is the key age to educate about healthy eating. If you watch any of Jamie's programs he doesn't 100% cut out "treats" and salad probably makes up 20-30% of what he serves. You say junk food tastes fantastic, but I challenge you to cook anything from Jamie's 30 minute meals and say it doesn't taste better!
i think this is more about having healthier entrees and more vegetables in school lunches. i don't think it's really about offering fewer chocolate bars and stuff. those are only in the machines. when i was in school in the usa, you didn't have any choice what meal you get for lunch, and they often have hamburgers or pizza more than once a week because it is cheaper than giving the kids vegetables or healthier stuff. and by the way, i LOVE salad.
If you want to lose weight you make the choice to. It's that simple. If the tempation of having junk food at lunch is too much then that's your problem. I agree with you, although there should be healthy options added to the junk food so that the kids like me who are trying to lose weight at least have a good option.
The food companies are just making money and the people who choose junk food are allowing that to happen. People who don't want to choose those foods just shouldn't choose them.
actually i do agree with you. the healthy food scheme was introduced in my last year of high school here in australia and to be honest it was a load of crap. i went to a senior school, so only people over 15 went tot he campus, now im a fat kid, but even still i can make my own decisions on what to eat for lunch. instead of buying from the school canteen we just drove to maccas. so in effect they just sent the canteen broke. this campaign is a load of rubbish !!!
The problem in America isn't that we eat too much unhealthy food, the problem is we eat too much food in general. If you don't like what your school is providing to your children, pack them a lunch. Or go off campus. You're not forced to eat on campus.
Personally, I think that just taking away junk food is not going to stop kids from eating it. If the schools would take the time to actually educate the children and teach them why eating too much junk food and not exercising enough can be incredibly detrimental to their health, then that would be much more effective.
I'm in Australia, and they brought in those crap "Healthy Eating" rules when I was in year 11. It didn't stop anyone; there was a grocery store across the road that kids would go to before school. My friends and I did "fat Fridays" every two weeks; we'd bring in copious amounts of junk food and pig out. The teachers came to sponge some off us.
Oh and as for the sport I HATED sport at school however it's the teachers who make or break it.
The teachers should pick the teams so no-one gets left out and they shouldn't victimise the kids who aren't good. ENCOURAGE them, don't make them feel bad or shout at them.
Kids need exercise and although I hated it, it's just necessary to stay healthy and kids need to learn that.
(Sorry for saying "kids" so much - it sounds so patronising! But with these character limits I have no room for synonyms!)
I think junk food shouldn't be in schools as if you've the option of junk or healthy you're going to take junk and it's best to not be tempted.
The way your school handled it was bad and you need a happy medium. My school had "chip day" on Fridays which is good to show you can have treats but in moderation.
A lot of kids don't get good food at home so at least they have a good example at school for later life and to keep them healthy now.
Love your videos and see your point but am with Jamie.
Completely agree with you. I mean, Sarah Palin is a nutter but on this she's right. When they cut all the unhealthy food from my school I was fortunate enough to have a friend with a car so we drove to McDonalds to get something or else just brought sandwiches in. I'm probably about the same build as you, never been fat, never been any good or interested in sports but what I eat is "everything in moderation" and I walk a lot. That's all you need.
Just for future reference, Laura, you aren't really supposed to suggest that Sarah Palin might have said something reasonable. It makes people uncomfortable to think they might have to take a strong Conservative woman seriously.
@alliteration1247 Yes, yes, of course she is. And she was elected governor of Alaska out of... pity, I suppose? Really, this knee-jerk response of "She's nuts!" to anything Sarah Palin says is so comical, it borders on tragedy. By no means does anyone have to agree with what she says, but have the intellectual honesty to evaluate her words objectively instead of regurgitating the response programed into the public by the media.
@InkyM4 MMM so I say something oyu don't like so you call me brainwashed. That makes sense. Are you really suggesting that just because she was elected governor for one term she's qualified to have THIS MUCH attention on her opinions as she gets ready to run for office? Sorry some of us don't like it when people who obviously don't know what they're talking about get up and act like they do? I've watched many of her interviews and she is underqualified. to be in her feild
@alliteration1247 You didn't say "something I don't like"; you made a highly exaggerated statement without a shred of support identical to the many "Well, she's a fruit-loop!" comments on this video. I'm sorry, I can't call that independent thinking. Expressing your opinion that Palin is "under-qualified to be in her field" is more reasonable, but it doesn't follow that she doesn't know what she's talking about. I think she's quite well-spoken; you are, of course, free to disagree.
@InkyM4 Yes, I am free to disagree. She's awfully spoken and also if what you consider "not independent thinking" is humor you need to rethink your choices. Because yes, that was an overexagerated statement similar to "she's a fruit loop" but it was also a funny way to state that you don't like a particular member of the political arena for a variety of reasons mine include that she's not well spoken and "under qualified to be in her feild" so I'm sorry you can't consider comedy free thinking.
@alliteration1247 Ah, and insinuating that a person suffers from mental retardation in the exact same way as everyone else, and in the exact same way in which everyone else has been insinuating so since 2008 is the paragon of cutting-edge, original humor. I can't believe I didn't see it before! You, sir or madam, are the next Conan O'Brien. Well done!
@InkyM4 I also think it's silly to take petty name calling in such a serious matter that the name caller (me) is automatically a sheep of the media. Truthfully, Sarah Palin is a really easy target and comedians like Jon Stewart, Tina Fey and myself are going to take those shots because she's outlandish and sort of a goof. and if you're not able to laugh at yourself and the choices of your favorite candidates then I don't understand how you survive.
Why do they have to be mutually exclusive? Why not have the healthy cafeteria options and one or two healthier vending machines as well as the unhealthy food. I'm sure there are healthy companies that would love to have their granola bar vending machines in schools.
@Beniqwa First of all, granola bars aren't healthy, it's a marketing campaign. Second, you don't give kids options, you just give them right one because most of them aren't mature enough to make an educated choice.
We are fast approaching planet ban it, if the public allows this to happen in the long term, then it will give them an excuse to take more things away in our life. so the ones who disagree with this video, you will eventually have something that you cherish taken away.
I agree. I used to be sporty but then got into high school and they wern't fun anymore. A lot of the good sports players got cocky and I didn't want to be like that. I like junk food but I'm still quite small. If you actually are eating healthy there's nothing wrong with having a candy bar. Some schools should revise their menus. Yes. But I don't think unhealthy things should be cut out completely. We have to learn to make healthy decisions for ourselves at some point.
If you really wanted a chocolate bar, you could have went to the store one day and bought a box to bring with your own lunch. The problem is that lack of education and then overabundance of junk in kids faces means no one will eat properly. I do think the choice should be there at the school, but unfortunately kids are just getting way too fat.
I'm with you, Laura; we don't need a "nanny state" making decisions for us. Let the free market loose. It's good to get kids nutritional information, but still leave the choice up to the individual.
I sort of feel like focusing on education would be a bit more fruitful in this matter. My schools health classes did educate me on healthy choices. They gave us the facts, showed us healthier options. Ive never been sporty, and the teacher said, you don't have to play sports to get exercise, you can walk your dog, play with your younger siblings at the park, walk around downtown with your friends etc. So, there really are better ways to help kids get healthy than banning 'junk' food from school
I agree with you in that the new meal plans are silly, they definitely won't solve anything.
But Palin offers no alternative to the act and apposes it on the grounds that "it's medaling in people's lives" Seriously? She is anti-abortion and promotes no sex until after marriage. THAT is medaling too much in someone's life. She's just apposed to the act because it came from Obama
I think it's more of a way to introduce better eating habits while the kids are still young instead of them getting stuck in a habit of eating candy and stuff all the time.
i wouldn't say i'm a very healthy eater, but i do get where the whole healthy eating plan is coming from.
hmm i think healthy whole foods should be just as avalable and cheap as all the crap and junk food out there..also better quality healthy food, then kids and stuff will actually WANT to eat it. I think a lot of young people need to be educated on nutrition and health propally so that they have the knowledge about what they are putting in their bodies and how it is going to effect them, not just physically but mentally too
I agree, I'm all for healthy food, but the way that the government usally goes about it is stupid. They did the same thing in my school when I was about 13 as well; they took away all our vending machines so we couldn't buy chocolate, but they didnt actually change the healthiness of our school dinners, so we had the same fatty, salty school meals and then bought chocolate from the corner shop after school instead!
Oh and you're so right about sporty kids. Some people just CAN'T do sport!
The parents need to raise their game or the government has to intervene. It's got beyond the point of "let's discuss this." It's time the UK and USA get kids back in line, whether it's on food or behaviour. Our country is going to the dogs and as the phrase suggests I think it is down to "bad parenting." I'm all for freedom of choice but where is the nhs going to be or the proposed medicaid for the US if there's this hanging over them? hmm.
sorry i have to dissagree (kind of) i think healthy food should be an option and the quality of food on a whole should be improved. tha way everyone has a choice.
however, i also believe that phyisical education should be compulsary - i get about 3 hours a week and wish that is was double that (yes i am sporty - and proud :L)
Apart from anything else, if you force people to have healthy foods etc., they are just going to want to rebel. These things are about personal choice... the information is ALL out there and hugely available for people if they can be bothered to go look for it, and if their life is being so affected by obesity problems, THEY SHOULD!!!!! A healthy option and pointing out what things are good for you is great. BUT LEAVE THE CHOCOLATE.
I agree with you! And found myself in an identical situation at school; not sporty, not obese and PUNISHED by the healthy eating program introduced in year 11.
I can't believe I only just found this channel, you've got such an engaging way of vlogging! :D
I try to keep fit. I started going to the gym twice a week since last year and cutting back on junk food. Food is naturally healthy where I come from, but for pete's sake I hate salad's too.
I agree with lupa559 at the end of the day they can still have junk food, but on their own time the government should not be promoting a unhealthy lifestyle, if they want chocolate they should bring it to school with them. If the only option was food at school then potentially there would be a problem but in a massive proportion of the cases i highly doubt that is the situation.
I agrees ^^ You should've seen the increase of fat kids in my old school when this started happening especially compared to my sixth form where we're free to have whatever we want. The people are slimmer than they were in my secondary school surprisingly and that's mainly down to all the 'healthy drinks and foods' which contain much more calories than junk food some of the times but also with healthy foods people don't feel satisfied so they end up eating more of the stuff =/.
Originally I didn't agree with you but now you've totally convinced me. Children will just get junk food from elsewhere - most likely their homes. And it is a case of everything in moderation, if you want a chocolate bar you can have one just not twenty! Thats when the problem occurs! x
I don't think it is meddling. It's not saying the kids can't have junk food, it's saying they aren't going to provide it anymore. If they wanna go out and buy their own junk food outside of school they can. Also, it's school and so it has a responsibility to look after the wellfare of the kids while they're there, no one said school had to be fun.
Jamie Oliver's suggestions are darn Tasty and Healthy, better than pure junk in any way. When you see that a situation is not doing anyone, any good, why not try to improve it?Even regarding children's eating habits outside school. Why be lazy and ruin their health, when all it takes to have a tasty and beneficial snack, is to spend only abit more time on preparing it?I think it's worth our time and attention, instead of giving in on pointless and harmful habits.
i used to have a nutella sandwich every day when i cam home from school... didn't affect me... i'm with you... let kids have a little or it's just cruel.
it's when they have a lot they turn into chunk from the goonies
the only problem here laura is that American kids eat SOOO FARKING BAD!!!
they pretty much are eating the equivalent of mcDonalds every day...so I really don't see why introducing healthier food isn't the best way to go. Kids will still be able to eat their crap at home!
I'm in Australia and my school canteen (cafeteria) serves only healthy food and no one gives a crap about it...because it still tastes good.
I do agree with you Laura. You have to be extremely careful when setting children's lunches that they are going to like it for a start (and most kids don't like salads), I think they ought to leave the chocolate bars and the like but make the actual school dinners healthy while still providing all the other snack foods. Kids will want to eat more than just chocolate or crisps for lunch anyway, so why not make the dinners healthy and wholesome but keep the snacks as treats if you like.
The fact that the plan implemented in your school was poorly executed holds no bearing on Jamie's argument. Palin IS nuts. You probably should've learned a bit more about this subject before forming am opinion.
The Salad Law was passed in England in 1758. It states that by law a female of between 17-35 must partake of lettuce eating at least 3 times per week while being chastised by her husband to remind her who suffered 100 years of war to bring her back this subtle vegetation from the Tropics.
First off I agree with you 100% no one should be told what they can or can't eat. With that said you are mistaken as to what the First Lady is administering. There is no mandate to eat this or eat that they are only trying to make nutritional food available. Most school systems have gone away from providing nutritional foods to what is easiest to serve mainly cheeseburgers and fries. Or junk food in vending machines. No one is saying what you can or can't eat that is just Palin lying again.
I remember how this impacted primary school. In primary 1 and 2 they sold Capri-Sun, Crisps, cakes and chocolate.
Primary 3, 4, 5 & 6 the chocolate and Capri-Sun were removed and replaced with another decent fruit drink and pizza.
Primary 7. Tiny thin pizzas and (Fruit) and grape drinks that all tasted horrible.

MadameChelsers 3 months ago
Watch the series! It's not about Jamie trying to ban junk food, and it's not about a 'nanny state'. You can't rely on children as young as five to choose a healthy option the majority of the time, when there is pizza/chips/flavoured-milk etc. as an option every single day!
wejmiller 3 months ago
@wejmiller Children that young should be monitored by adults when they're eating, don't you think? Parents affect what their children do and do not eat, and it's THEIR fault if their kid eats too much unhealthy stuff. She's speaking more about stuff like this going on in middle and high schools. If kids don't have healthy eating habits by then, the schools limiting what snacks they make available has no effect whatsoever. They'll just have their parents buy it for them before or after school.

RiddlesAndTheRhymes 5 months ago
Schools should have an obligation to provide healthy, balanced meals and in turn promote a healthy attitude to eating. After all, it is where kids spend a large part of their life! Some people like Laura see snacks like chocolate or crisps for what they are...an occassional treat and that's fine and harmless but others see them as regular food and the obesity epidemic is the result. Schools providing healthy meals is not the problem. Wider society and in particular, parents, are!

Good argument though, Laura.

You summed it up at the end. It isn't eating healthy they are teaching the children at school its just teaching them to hate school lunches. Taking something away from a teenager just makes them want it more. Eventually everyone learns what works best for their body, and obesity is a person's own fault not the school lunch's fault.
fieldgirl7 1 year ago
I see your point, but if I may ask... have you ever eaten lunch at an American school cafeteria? I haven't ever eaten at an English school, but I'm going to venture and say that there's a high chance that the two are quite different. I try my hardest not to eat school food because the choices are extremely limited, and usually pretty gross (not just unhealthy).

This number may seem low, but as this population ages, it poses a huge burden not only upon the individuals' health but upon society and the healthcare industry that supports us all.
chunkymonky218 1 year ago
Jamie Oliver NEVER said children should never be allowed to indulge in sweets and snacks. His is a general initiative to increase the variety and availability of healthy, nourishing foods into the diets of youth. The foods that are readily available to children in school DO shape their eating habits both inside and outside of school. Public health initiatives that merely promote the welfare of our population do not make a nanny state. No one is infringing upon your right to eat what you want.
chunkymonky218 1 year ago
Also, just because people eat junk food and do minimal physical activity but stay thin doesn't mean it works for everyone. Every person's body and metabolism are different, so you really can't generalize the situation.
Added note: props for expressing what you actually believe on the matter. You also made me post my first "serious" comment on YouTube in years, so...yeah, I feel like a douchebag who wants to start a political debate on the internet. I applaud you.
kerflunkfod 1 year ago
I think that measures to improve the "healthiness" of food in lunchrooms are just as necessary as measures many countries took years ago to set standards for the workplace, animal/human treatment, etc (example: requiring that a building have lead-free paint is not a limit on our "freedom"; it's a measure to make sure that we are safe, and in a way this advances our freedom). I look at this bill as just another way to make sure that children are being offered the resources that they need.
kerflunkfod 1 year ago

Personally, I think that just taking away junk food is not going to stop kids from eating it. If the schools would take the time to actually educate the children and teach them why eating too much junk food and not exercising enough can be incredibly detrimental to their health, then that would be much more effective.

Love your videos and see your point but am with Jamie.
cordeliaistheone 1 year ago
Completely agree with you. I mean, Sarah Palin is a nutter but on this she's right. When they cut all the unhealthy food from my school I was fortunate enough to have a friend with a car so we drove to McDonalds to get something or else just brought sandwiches in. I'm probably about the same build as you, never been fat, never been any good or interested in sports but what I eat is "everything in moderation" and I walk a lot. That's all you need.

You shouldn't be paranoid :D I speak like you, but tone it down for my videos :) hope you like mine!

Just for future reference, Laura, you aren't really supposed to suggest that Sarah Palin might have said something reasonable. It makes people uncomfortable to think they might have to take a strong Conservative woman seriously.
InkyM4 1 year ago
@InkyM4 Oh it's not just that she's a strong conservative woman... it's that's she's probably legally retarded.
alliteration1247 1 year ago
@alliteration1247 Yes, yes, of course she is. And she was elected governor of Alaska out of... pity, I suppose? Really, this knee-jerk response of "She's nuts!" to anything Sarah Palin says is so comical, it borders on tragedy. By no means does anyone have to agree with what she says, but have the intellectual honesty to evaluate her words objectively instead of regurgitating the response programed into the public by the media.
InkyM4 1 year ago
@InkyM4 MMM so I say something oyu don't like so you call me brainwashed. That makes sense. Are you really suggesting that just because she was elected governor for one term she's qualified to have THIS MUCH attention on her opinions as she gets ready to run for office? Sorry some of us don't like it when people who obviously don't know what they're talking about get up and act like they do? I've watched many of her interviews and she is underqualified. to be in her feild
alliteration1247 1 year ago
@alliteration1247 You didn't say "something I don't like"; you made a highly exaggerated statement without a shred of support identical to the many "Well, she's a fruit-loop!" comments on this video. I'm sorry, I can't call that independent thinking. Expressing your opinion that Palin is "under-qualified to be in her field" is more reasonable, but it doesn't follow that she doesn't know what she's talking about. I think she's quite well-spoken; you are, of course, free to disagree.
InkyM4 1 year ago
@InkyM4 Yes, I am free to disagree. She's awfully spoken and also if what you consider "not independent thinking" is humor you need to rethink your choices. Because yes, that was an overexagerated statement similar to "she's a fruit loop" but it was also a funny way to state that you don't like a particular member of the political arena for a variety of reasons mine include that she's not well spoken and "under qualified to be in her feild" so I'm sorry you can't consider comedy free thinking.
alliteration1247 1 year ago
@alliteration1247 Ah, and insinuating that a person suffers from mental retardation in the exact same way as everyone else, and in the exact same way in which everyone else has been insinuating so since 2008 is the paragon of cutting-edge, original humor. I can't believe I didn't see it before! You, sir or madam, are the next Conan O'Brien. Well done!
InkyM4 1 year ago
@InkyM4 I also think it's silly to take petty name calling in such a serious matter that the name caller (me) is automatically a sheep of the media. Truthfully, Sarah Palin is a really easy target and comedians like Jon Stewart, Tina Fey and myself are going to take those shots because she's outlandish and sort of a goof. and if you're not able to laugh at yourself and the choices of your favorite candidates then I don't understand how you survive.
alliteration1247 1 year ago
Why do they have to be mutually exclusive? Why not have the healthy cafeteria options and one or two healthier vending machines as well as the unhealthy food. I'm sure there are healthy companies that would love to have their granola bar vending machines in schools.
Beniqwa 1 year ago 19
@Beniqwa First of all, granola bars aren't healthy, it's a marketing campaign. Second, you don't give kids options, you just give them right one because most of them aren't mature enough to make an educated choice.
viniciusb 8 months ago
We are fast approaching planet ban it, if the public allows this to happen in the long term, then it will give them an excuse to take more things away in our life. so the ones who disagree with this video, you will eventually have something that you cherish taken away.

I agree with you 100%.
But just in case you were wondering, my school has a nearly unlimited supply of chocolate bars and fizzy soda. :)
moganteylor 1 year ago
LuvsDoctorWho 1 year ago
If you really wanted a chocolate bar, you could have went to the store one day and bought a box to bring with your own lunch. The problem is that lack of education and then overabundance of junk in kids faces means no one will eat properly. I do think the choice should be there at the school, but unfortunately kids are just getting way too fat.

I'm with you, Laura; we don't need a "nanny state" making decisions for us. Let the free market loose. It's good to get kids nutritional information, but still leave the choice up to the individual.

oli696969 1 year ago

I think a lot of young people need to be educated on nutrition and health propally so that they have the knowledge about what they are putting in their bodies and how it is going to effect them, not just physically but mentally too
hellotwat 1 year ago
I agree, I'm all for healthy food, but the way that the government usally goes about it is stupid. They did the same thing in my school when I was about 13 as well; they took away all our vending machines so we couldn't buy chocolate, but they didnt actually change the healthiness of our school dinners, so we had the same fatty, salty school meals and then bought chocolate from the corner shop after school instead!
Oh and you're so right about sporty kids. Some people just CAN'T do sport!
aliceinwonderinc 1 year ago
The parents need to raise their game or the government has to intervene. It's got beyond the point of "let's discuss this." It's time the UK and USA get kids back in line, whether it's on food or behaviour. Our country is going to the dogs and as the phrase suggests I think it is down to "bad parenting." I'm all for freedom of choice but where is the nhs going to be or the proposed medicaid for the US if there's this hanging over them? hmm.

sorry i have to dissagree (kind of) i think healthy food should be an option and the quality of food on a whole should be improved. tha way everyone has a choice.
however, i also believe that phyisical education should be compulsary - i get about 3 hours a week and wish that is was double that (yes i am sporty - and proud :L)
really liked this video :D

I LOVE YOU.
You're right.
BUT LEAVE THE CHOCOLATE.
xD

I agree with you! And found myself in an identical situation at school; not sporty, not obese and PUNISHED by the healthy eating program introduced in year 11.

I try to keep fit. I started going to the gym twice a week since last year and cutting back on junk food. Food is naturally healthy where I come from, but for pete's sake I hate salad's too.
radomu1 1 year ago

I just hate Jamie Oliver in general.
InevitableEvo 1 year ago
Originally I didn't agree with you but now you've totally convinced me. Children will just get junk food from elsewhere - most likely their homes. And it is a case of everything in moderation, if you want a chocolate bar you can have one just not twenty! Thats when the problem occurs! x
lilxgirlyxtimexlord 1 year ago
I don't think it is meddling. It's not saying the kids can't have junk food, it's saying they aren't going to provide it anymore. If they wanna go out and buy their own junk food outside of school they can. Also, it's school and so it has a responsibility to look after the wellfare of the kids while they're there, no one said school had to be fun.

Jamie Oliver's suggestions are darn Tasty and Healthy, better than pure junk in any way. When you see that a situation is not doing anyone, any good, why not try to improve it?Even regarding children's eating habits outside school. Why be lazy and ruin their health, when all it takes to have a tasty and beneficial snack, is to spend only abit more time on preparing it?I think it's worth our time and attention, instead of giving in on pointless and harmful habits.

the only problem here laura is that American kids eat SOOO FARKING BAD!!!
they pretty much are eating the equivalent of mcDonalds every day...so I really don't see why introducing healthier food isn't the best way to go. Kids will still be able to eat their crap at home!
I'm in Australia and my school canteen (cafeteria) serves only healthy food and no one gives a crap about it...because it still tastes good.
oOAstarOo 1 year ago
but then again laura, i doubt you were very chubby at school.
i have been since i was about 10
im at uni now and ive realised that i have to go to the gym multiple times a week and eat salad as much as possible or im screwed.
but then i do hate team sports =p
and yeah, oliver is right, she's batshit crazy, and an idiot. go listen to some of her interviews.
hellzoneUK1991 1 year ago 7
I do agree with you Laura. You have to be extremely careful when setting children's lunches that they are going to like it for a start (and most kids don't like salads), I think they ought to leave the chocolate bars and the like but make the actual school dinners healthy while still providing all the other snack foods. Kids will want to eat more than just chocolate or crisps for lunch anyway, so why not make the dinners healthy and wholesome but keep the snacks as treats if you like.

The Salad Law was passed in England in 1758. It states that by law a female of between 17-35 must partake of lettuce eating at least 3 times per week while being chastised by her husband to remind her who suffered 100 years of war to bring her back this subtle vegetation from the Tropics.
Noobsquadz 1 year ago
First off I agree with you 100% no one should be told what they can or can't eat. With that said you are mistaken as to what the First Lady is administering. There is no mandate to eat this or eat that they are only trying to make nutritional food available. Most school systems have gone away from providing nutritional foods to what is easiest to serve mainly cheeseburgers and fries. Or junk food in vending machines. No one is saying what you can or can't eat that is just Palin lying again.
