  • MacEnroe was probably laughing his ass off inside.

  • Umpires in those days were inbred out of touch unprofessional twats

  • That's a hell of a mustache!

  • Borg's stare could melt the umpire at 2:08

  • mac didnt even make it to the semis??? who else did he lose to?

no doubt lendl strategically won/lost matches so as to make the easiest path for him to get to the finals (where he lost anyways, haha)

  • to say this is rare is a vasy understatement.i only remember it happening a couple of times in his whole career.

  • This is the second match of round robin at masters gp 1980 played in January 1981. The semifinals were played between Borg Connors & Lendl Gene Mayer.

  • Volvo Grand Prix Masters, 1981. =D

  • witch tournament were this?

  • So funny to watch Borg´s way of "arguing" compared to Mac´s he is just standing there, looking sad until the points are deducted. Talk about different mentalities. Thanks for posting.

  • they didn't have hawkeye. real smart comment.

  • it's a joke. wow.

  • no cause jokes are funny.

  • 2:11 Borg eye-daggers emerge

  • or maybe somone took bribe =d

  • The announcer is HILARIOUS. "He REALLY will have to get on with it. This is MOST SERIOUS for Borg!" You can't beat the British! Hahaha!

  • =) So true.

  • This umpire is a dill seriously, he made a horrible call and borg had every right to argue his case. Then he has the nerve to call time violation or wateva it was on borg. Borg should have throttled him.

  • I agree. When he finally did serve, he should have done what McEnroe's TeamTennis teammate did the other nite and beaned the m'fer.

  • Comment removed

  • lol, this was because he hang around too much with McEnroe

  • where is that match?

  • It was played in New York, the Masters.

  • Good to see Borg sticking up for himself

  • Borg looks like he's trying to decide if it's worth killing the judge, or not.

  • compared to mcenroe borg was much more sportsmanlike

  • Borg looked ready to murder around 2:14

  • Even in this poor quality youtube video, you can plainly see the ball was in.

  • Oh can you...can you REALLY now.

  • Yes. . . yes you CAN now.

  • the umpires mustache looks ridiculous.

  • Borg must have really felt like he got hooked on a call to argue like this. He never did that. McEnroe was probably shocked on the other side of the net

  • dang, this isn't the iceborg i ever recalled

  • I will say this: laver and rosewall were made of tougher stuff than borg

  • I really think the combination of McEnroe breathing down his neck, burn-out, and a screwed-up personal life were all becoming too much

  • wow, Borg looks rattled

  • mcenroe deliberately gave one away after this..tahts teh highlight that should ber here

  • I think this was a sign of the end. Borg only argued during the 1973 Quarter against Taylor (or whatever his name is) at wimbledon, and he really went "overboard" for Borg, its amazing. I think it shows that the pressure was really mounting on him and he was getting sick of tennis in general

  • Borg at the 1980 Tennis Masters:

    RR Clerc, Jose-Luis (ARG) 6-3 6-4

RR Mayer, Gene (USA) 0-6 3-6

    RR McEnroe, John (USA) 6-4 6-7 7-6

    S Connors, Jimmy (USA) 6-4 6-7 6-3

    W Lendl, Ivan (USA) 6-4 6-2 6-2

  • This is all correct, except that Borg's loss to Mayer took place the day after his match with McEnroe, not the day before. The win over McEnroe had given him two victories in the round-robin, assuring him a spot in the semis. He essentially threw the match with Mayer.

  • Interesting. Source?

  • I got that info from the New York Times reports on the event.

  • This was the semi-final of the US Tennis Masters in 1980. Borg eventually beat McEnroe in this match and went on to beat Ivan Lendl in the final.

  • Actually it wasn't a semi .. this was the third RR match for Borg, which was a must-win for him in order to advance to the semi, which he would play against Jimmy Connors.

  • What match is this?
