  • The one person who didn't like this doesn't get the fundamental fact, that some of the best songs around are about true events. Johnny Horton nearly made a living out of songs based on true events or true characters.

  • More memories of lying on the floor in my grandmothers parlor listening to her "Talking Machine". Her words. Thanks Grandma!

  • The story of Floyd Collins has sent a shiver down my spine. What a tragic end to his life.

Thank you for sharing this Vernon Dalhart post. much appreciated.

  • My father, now deceased, would sing this song as he taught me to play guitar. Glad to hear the original. Great memories. Thank you for posting this!

  • My sister and I, as children, would lie on hot summer days under Granddaddy's bed, and he'd sing this tune accompanied by his guitar. I had forgotten the tune; it's good to have this online.

  • Anybody else know the Adam Guettel musical Floyd Collins? I stumbled upon this video while looking for clips from that. This is awesome, thanks for posting!

  • i just was looking around and so a DL about old rare songs from 1920's saw this artist on the list decided to look his name up selected this song and wow is all i have to say ...amazing

  • Thank you so much for posting this video. My 94 year old Grandmother was telling me about her own Grandmother from Virginia. Her Grandmother played this song for my Grandma over and over again when she was a little girl on the Victrola. It gave my Grandma lots of pleasure to hear this song again.

Bless you for giving a long lost happy memory to the most important person in my life.

  • Such a sweet comment. A stranger wishes your grandmother well.

  • What a tragic story. I first heard about this incident just a couple of years ago. So sad.

    Great song.

Maybe they'll make a motion picture about the incident. Maybe?? I hope so...

    RIP, Floyd Collins

  • There was an off-Broadway play about it in the early nineties. I was born and grew up in Horse Cave, Kentucky. There was a monument to Floyd Collins only a block from where I lived. I think it was later taken down due to neglect.

  • Kirk Douglas starred in a film in that was loosely based on the Floyd Collins story. "Ace in the Hole" was released in 1951. The producers said it had nothing to do with the Collins story, but they were sued for copyright infringement and lost.

  • do you have dream of a miner child?
