Saw her in Central Park, I think in the 80s; small crowd outside a place I can't recall the name of; seem to remember"Sheep" something; it looked like an old barn. She sounded great, but seemed very sad.
I wish someone would upload Broadway from this album. I was raised on that record that came out the year after I was born. My father had it in his vinyl collection.
NYC Aug 23rd...sat next to a gentleman on the subway on my way to work carrying a newly bought Dakota Staton LP "Dynamic!"...great classic cover...just beautiful. He was admiring his purchase in it's clear protective wrapping, flipping it over and taking in both sides, which were both beautiful. i had never heard of her and made a mental note to Google her after work and here I am! Glad to discover another American great!
@joshmos that's deep; i saw a docu. where they asked patti labelle who she listened to growing up; she responded dakota staton and dinah washington, so i hit her up on youtube. glad i did, what a voice.
I grew up on this "LATE LATE SHOW" and "DYNAMIC DAKOTA STATON" albums vinyl - Parents bought originals in 50s & 60s. I did see her live in Indy Jazz Kitchen in the 80s; she was still great. I thought I'd never hear her sing again... Thanks - Very
@ohnoestheydidnt Not a bit. Starbucks surprises me with the good stuff they put on their collections. Anything that makes folks aware of the rare old treasures is OK by me.
Wow, I am 57 years old and just learned of her by chance when I saw her Late Late Show album in a thrift shop and was entranced by the picture; decided to take a chance (at 48 cents--not much risk) . Took it home and listened to it 5 times straight. I'm hooked. How in the world could I have never heard of her? Just ordered an album off ebay
@mcorby53 You say the cost was not much of a risk, but think of what you would have missed out on by not taking that risk! I would pay someone .50 to introduce them to her!!!
I was an adult when I first heard Dakota, and Gloria; but I know that impressionable feeling. I was a child when I first heard Dinah, and memory lingers on.
a great singer mostly overlooked, brought to notice by baltimore d.j chuck richards, with her great redetion of ; 'IN VITATION'' FOR THOSE EARLY HEP CATS, WHO LISTENED DURING THOSE LATE HOURS ON THE LATE -LATE SHOW OF EARLY RN.B MUSIC AND,J AND SHOW AND MUSIC LONG BEFORE IT.S TIME
I bought this album when it first came out. Dakota knocked me out. The spirit in that voice is so enthusiastic and honest. I thought I discovered a great talent but was disappointed then angry when I understood I would not hear much from Dakota because the media was pushing Sarah Vaughn over her. I always felt it was a deliberate move and such a shame. Her voice and style is sublime and though she sang for many years, she wasn't in the mainstream but for a very very short period. RIP.
@jimg14744 Most Definitely! What about "You Showed Me The Way" The woman's voice was extroardinay!! I was a child when "The Late Late Show" debuted. But the swing in the band playing behind her and that voice like fire and ice, thrilled this little girl to death. It was her, Gloria and Dinah that was in my parents home. And every weekend those 3 were our hit parade!
two of my favorite albums-this and the one recorded right before it-gordon macrae motion picture soundstage(they're t-957 and t-958 or some such)both released september 1957-and yes, my funny valentine is one of the greatest renditions...
At the age of 10, I was introduced to Dakota on wax, and subsequently wore out three LP's over a 35 year period. Took it to Nam and Germany. Picked up 'Late, Late Show' as my first CD years later, but it sounded as if it had remixed in a cave. Too hollow - no warmth. Six years ago I found another LP with little or no use. Still my favorite album in the collection. She's gone now, R.I.P. - but she still moves me almost 52 years later.
I remember her like it was yesterday. In the mid-50's she played a gig in Philly. At that time I was the night mgr. at a center city hotel where she stayed. Dropped by the club where she performed and heard the greatest version of "The Partys Over" ever ... by anyone! I've since looked for a recording, but in vain. she was truly one of the greats.
Dakota Staton was born in the Homewood section of Pittsburgh, Pa., she attended George Westinghouse High School. She studied music at the Filion School of Music in Pittsburgh. Later she performed regularly in the Hill District, at the Crawford Grill, a jazz hotspot, as a vocalist with the Joe Westray Orchestra, a popular Pittsburgh orchestra. She died April 10, 2007. In 1957, "The Late, Late Show" was her biggest hit on Capitol Records.
My Dad had this album and he would rave about Dakota. And as an adult, I realize he as so right! The classic singers of today (Patti/Chaka) mention they were inspired by Dakota. Bravo Dakota!
Vraiment super. Excellente voix. trés bonne interprétation. Je ne connaissais que la version de Nat King Cole avec Basie orchestra. Et là, je dois reconnaitre une trés grande artiste. Youpiiiiiii.....

what is amazing about this track is that it sounds so fres for 1957. The music is so current, does not sound dated at all.

Dakota was one of my favorite singers back in the late fifties and early sixties. She had a fiery approach and sang great.
