I hadn't heard of an Axolotl until I read the excellent book, "The ancestor's tale " by Richard Dawkins. In the chapter 'Axolotl's tale' he explains more about neoteny or progenesis, the evolutionary consequence of which is called paedomorphosis. The axolotl is just an extreme among salamanders. Many species seem to be , to some extent, paedomorphic, others do other heterochronically interesting things. Axolotls treated with thyroxine lose their gills and become dry land salamanders.
i have three axolotl since day one of my fish hobby one white yellow and white notg mated yet but i keep mine in a 150 with 3 gar pikes they are fish friendly their like buds ill post a video of it pretty sweet c:
Is that a black Moor in the tank with it? O.o Cause I was wanting to get a 75 gallon Long tank, and have two of the Axies, and I currently have Two black moor, but I wasnt sure if they could be housed together. I've had my Black moor for about a year, and I wouldnt want anything to happen to them, or for them to interfere with the Axies habitat. :D
@chokenwonderland Prolly not they will compete and the goldfish will prolly get it first if it floats and the goldish will prolly nip their gills its just not a good idea even though i love goldfish they are rewally a species only animal
@ctarshis01@chokenwonderland Yes, it's a moor and an orange goldfish. They dodn't nip gills, as the axolotls were eager enough to nip fish ;-) however, I did get rid of the fish. The reason was that they grew so tame (I handfed the fish) that they would be in the way when I was trying to feed the axies ^_^
@shadowsflamechick It looks like a leucistic, it just has more of the gray speckling (making up over half of its body color) than most do. It still has the bright pink gills like leucistics and albinos do, and lots of leucistics have gray over part of their face. This Axie is very cute because it's so rare to see the gray extend that far.
As of 2010, wild axolotls are near extinction due to urbanization in Mexico City and polluted waters. Nonnative fish such as African tilapia and Asian carp have also recently been introduced to the waters. These new fish have been eating the axolotls' young, as well as its primary source of food. The axolotl is currently on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's annual Red List of threatened species. Post this on 10 videos about Axolotl if you care.. :'(
Its so hard to keep them alive. I have got two at one is not feeling well when i saw it it looked dead but it wasn't. I have to keep changing the ph water
@MrLily443 please go to caudata dot org, membership is free. there's an axolotl forum there, with lots of people who can help you. keeping axolotls is not hard, but maybe you're missing a detail. please ask them for help, they know what to do.
@angelsgrace16 very happy with my pet axies. just don't expect a very loving or active animal, most of the time they just sit there. for proper care, please have a look at the axolotl forum on caudata.org . there's also lots of information on how to set up your tank.
@KarinUtrecht I'd say they do move. I've got two of them, one golden and one wild type. Maybe they're keeping each other more active, tho. And I'd say they're pretty loving too, always looking at you when you wake up in the morning and when you're on the computer right beside the tank and so on! Guess it's different from axolotl to axolotl too. Lovely animals with great personalities tho!
@Seidowh I agree with you, I thouroughly enjoy their company. However some people will be a little disappointed that you can't actually "play" with them like with a puppy :-)
@Seidowh my 2 are the same. i have a leucistic and a wild type male and female. they come to the edge of the tank, feed from my hand and will sit on my hand too as long as its under the water. the female one is quite shy stays in their tunnel a lot of the time but they both have an awesome feeding response.
You should get rid of that pea gravel! Sand or a bare bottom tank is better as axolotls will gladly eat that gravel which can lead to fatal intestinal impaction.
@absolutelyQT are you in the u.s? or on caudata? i was wondering where you got your axie from she is beautiful i currently have a golden albino gfp :]
Spot is absolutely beautiful! I would love to come across one with coloring like that. Do you know what it's called? I have a regular wild colored one and an albino one. I'm hoping that one day they produce a gold.
@Bamchikibam big snails are no problem (although I think most big snails can't cope with the cold water). In a 200 liter aquarium you can keep 1 or 2 axolotls :-)
The fish were put in the tank as live food. They've outgrown the axies now. And have learned in the process to keep their distance. So they do not nibble on the axies. They are goldfish yes. Neon tetras are also a good match (for a week or two) ;-)
Wow I love this axolotl. I'm trying to buy a couple of my own but haven't had much luck finding any. I've tried exotic pets but they only sell the gold colour. Is spot a wild type? Any advice would be apreciated :)
