Where there's conflict of idea and interest there's not gonna be peace, God is the only way and we have no idea when He'll return. With Islamic radicals we won't have peace. You make a fair point. I have actively opposed some aspects of US foreign policy and you are right; it is effectively a military empire even if successive presidents deny that.
However I think that with hegemony (whether it be American now, British in the 19th century or Chinese in the future) there will be an aspect of 'damned if you do damned if you don't' The US is condemned as a war machine if it intervenes but also condemned as selfish and useless if it doesn't.
The US is a powerful country whether we like it or not. The question should be; how is that power used? Every hegemony in history has had to also face responsibility. And the very nature of global geopolitics means there will always be some countries stronger or more significant than others. Nations are a bit like people in that sense. I want to see the war in Afghanistan end as soon as possible but not if peace condemns women to once again live in slavery and so on (word limitation)
I think the idea of this is one for optimism about human goodwill. Unfortunately I just don't think pacifism is realistic to the lessons from human history. World peace is impossible. Anyone with a brain and a grasp on history and politics, and also psychology, knows that well. Where there's conflict of idea and interest there's not gonna be peace, God is the only way and we have no idea when He'll return. With Islamic radicals we won't have peace. No matter how hard anyone tries there will NEVER be world peace. Don't waste your time. If everyone got rid of their armies, someone would take advantage, and that'd be a big problem. The NPP has degenerated into a dubious honor because of the obvious, blatant, petty leftist politics of the five Norwegian judges who award it. The internet is too cool to have that hung around its neck.

not really most european countries have been opposed to Castros reign over Cuba, including the nordic countries. But i suspect it has alot to do with the U.S expressing their sentiment as well. To be honest the Nobel has lost it's impact and worth over time. It probably has to do with the fact the institutions of prestige usually have a somewhat of a short shelf-life, i'm sure there will be another institution that will become more important and popular in the following generations.

You make a fair point. I have actively opposed some aspects of US foreign policy and you are right; it is effectively a military empire even if successive presidents deny that.
However I think that with hegemony (whether it be American now, British in the 19th century or Chinese in the future) there will be an aspect of 'damned if you do damned if you don't' The US is condemned as a war machine if it intervenes but also condemned as selfish and useless if it doesn't.

The US is a powerful country whether we like it or not. The question should be; how is that power used? Every hegemony in history has had to also face responsibility. And the very nature of global geopolitics means there will always be some countries stronger or more significant than others. Nations are a bit like people in that sense. I want to see the war in Afghanistan end as soon as possible but not if peace condemns women to once again live in slavery and so on (word limitation)

I think the idea of this is one for optimism about human goodwill. Unfortunately I just don't think pacifism is realistic to the lessons from human history. Wars should be avoided as much as possible but there are times when tyranny is worse. There is nothing noble about appeassing despotic regimes and that is where pacifism potentially fails. But how many people would really want to see it return to the days of the Taliban- there was relative stability (in the wake of the anarchy) but at a cost of the most extreme form of theocracy.
