  • idiots

  • latvian politics are greedy corrupt bastards who blame everything on Russians while selling their own land, weak, greedy, stupid people!

  • millions of square kilometres of pristine woodland????

All Latvia's territory is 64.000 square kilometers...so if 50% Latvias territory is coverd by woodland we got 32.000 squere kilometrs.....officialy.but in real life I think its just 30%

  • Latvians are amazing people and most beautiful in the each, i love you guys from georgia!

  • I am from latvia

  • Eastern Europeans are too corrupt to govern themselves just like in Africa/Middle-east thats why they still in live behind the standards of the 19th century

  • @ef6854

you cant really compare Latvia to Africa. Yes, its pooer then Western Europe, but its nothing like Africa.

  • Yeah I bet eu colonizers would like latvia to be a huge reservoir, that doesn't gain anything from it's forests and danes would love to build they're shitty pig farms all over the place. f-u hypocrites.

  • This is not a bulshit! Because if you would tray to flay over Latvia, Riga then all of you not believers would see the real situation! It is true not everything is real, but in future in Latvia meaby will not be anymore forest country, just a big field, whit no bio diversity.

  • I'ts all true. Ну что таутиши, не хотите верить, что вашу Латвию проюат под корень? Зато все на Латышском языке.

  • @Swinx1

Klausies,ja viss būtu krieviski,un krieviem būtu vara, tad Latvija sen jau būtu tuksnesis!!!

  • I am not an expert of Forest Industry, but I think this is exaggerated. BTW I am Latvian. At least Latvian experts and numbers tell different things.

  • that's 110% bullshit, shame on journalists

  • we are currently living in an economic shithole, but besides that it's all O. K.

  • The area of woods in Latvia has increased a lot since the 1930's and are continuing to grow. This is pure bullshit.

  • @griizinjkalns it's soooo NOT true.

  • @griizinjkalns it's soo NOT true

  • Kāds man var paskaidrot kur ir Rīgas universitāte? es esmu nesaprašanā...

  • It is provocation!!! It is thinked out junk!!! Why not interview with top experts from Forest school??? FSC certificate is only damned marketing tool!!!

Tā ir provokācija!!! Tās ir izdomātas mūļķības!!! Kādēļ nav intervijas ar Meža fakultātes ekspertiem??? FSC sertifikāts ir tikai marketinga instruments!!!

  • you've to do it soon....because we are so quick in cuting our woods....

  • you've to do it soon....because we are so quick in cuting our woods....

  • you've to do it soon....because we are so quick in cuting our woods....

  • I love the forests. My home is close to the forests, in summer we often can see little deer babies on the meadows besides fields, the hares come out in winter to bite the lower brances of our apple trees, but we dont mind, every winter we bring hay for the animals in forest so they have food. Recently the LVM had made a clearcut in one of the forests, there used to be the best mushroom growing places, now theres only debris... It makes me hell furios to see how they distroy our nature...

  • Latviesi ir lohi

  • Shukran, Aljazeera! Lets look systemically at this situation. The problem is not so much in cutting the trees at such a rate. The problem is that we have a very low added value exporting. Latvia is is the last country on EU innovation index. If we had more innovative products from wood, our export incomes would be much higher and there would be less unemployment. The root of the problem is with our education system!

  • As somebody mention previously and what this camel-jockey news channel deliberately omitted is that some owners of the wooden areas are from abroad, predominantly from Scandinavia. Not that it isn't fault of our government, that foreign companies are buying our own land, but also private landowners simply sold the land to the foreigners and that just proves there is a hole in lawmaking. Also looks like this news report is arranged for some third party interests. Dirty tricks.

  • LATVIA RULEEEEESSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • You Idiots, about 20% of Latvias territory is "guarded territory", where we Latvians, can't do anything!

Sure, for u foreigners it would be best if Latvia would be some green sh*t forest without any cities that u could visit and relay there. BUT WE DON"T CARE ABOUT U.

U don't know crap, UK destroyed their forests, Denmark completely destroyed their swamps. Sweden gave Latvians unreal credits SO FCK U STUPID FOREIGNERS AND EUROPEAN UNION WITH YOUR STUPID ADVISE!

  • "millions of square kilometres of pristine woodland" ????

wow, Latvia must be one of the largest countries in the world !!!!

Sweden gave Latvians unreal credits SO FCK U STUPID FOREIGNERS AND EUROPEAN UNION!

  • You may call us hippies to label us something negative, but the fact remains that at the rate we are consuming the environment, we are leaving horrible ecological conditions for our future families.

LNM ir sudas kompanija, es ceru ka vini bus iespert cietuma.

  • @khawkstah Hes isn't a Latvian, he can't write a sentence in Latvian language, and I shall correct him:

LNM ir suda kompanija, es ceru ka vini tiks ( not bus, that means " Shall " e.g. You shall be teacher,) iesperti cietuma.

BTW - This sounds more like Lithuanian language, which is similar to ours. And don't listen to guys who say " fuck you foreigners". They are Latvians who claim to be patriots, but they curse in Russian and most of their daily jobs are drinking 2.0 Litter ales.

  • @Janix130

Es esmu latvietis. Bet dzivoju kanada, piedod ka man ir slikta gtramatika. Es vel milu latviju un esmu tur ciemojis.

Man ir radi kas tur dzivo. Es stipri jutos par Latvjas meziem. Es piekritu ka mums ir pardaudz krievi latvija.

  • this is supposed to be khawk speaking. my bad.

  • @moyatingdemz Fakts paliek fakts.

  • As for the former sceptic commenters below, I have the following to say: If you don't live in latvia you have no idea what it is like. Yes, there is poverty and much of the country is without electricity. The major work in latvia is in farming. Some farmers live very far into the wilderness and make their money by selling their goods in local markets. Otherwise they live of the land. I have seen this poverty with my own eyes.

  • @khawkstah

You don't know what you're talking about. And stop posing as a Latvian, you clearly don't know anything about what's going on here.

  • @khawkstah - You claim to be latvian, but use google translate to write latvian text.

And "much of the country is without electricity" - ha! Where did you find such info? 100 years old books?

Even 15 years ago coverage was clearly 95%, leaving only some remote areas with with problematic access to 220v lines.

  • God damn it! The answer to these problems is HEMP PLANTS. If latvian farmers start to grow large amounts of hemp plants, they can use them as paper, rope, and other textiles as well as for gas, oil and plastics. They grow way faster than trees and using them wouldn't ruin our environment. The environment will diminish to a point where these companies are killing species and reducing oxygen that trees create. Humans leave a disscusting mark on the earth.

  • Latvia is a 3rd world country run by corrupt retards what do you expect ?

  • God bless EU, while bigest EU countrys live in fats, here in latvia people starving with 300 eiro sallary.

  • bananu republika buss un paliks

  • Thank you Aljazeera. The moment around 18:00 min was the best.

  • @MrKleinTV As they say in Latvia.... "Its nothing special" ....

  • The problem is in bureaucrats. The office-rats have no grip over reality. They believe in statistics and numbers, but the question is, who composes these numbers? There are people in LVM who benefit from all this, I suspect them to be closely related to most of the political parties, especially in those, who today are whitewashing themselves in opposition.

  • Bag of one sided info and lies to comfort the uninformed and ignorant pseudo eco-conscious consumer.

Latvia's forest coverage has incresed from 23% to over 50% during last 80 years. Farmlands have been exchanged to 'farming wood'. Showing some sites without the 'seed trees' left would be the same as showing a dumpsite in UK and claiming it is a representative scene of the whole island.

  • I want to go Latvia.

  • @flowewritharoma You really should, God knows how long there will be pure nature habitats to see... the cities are all around the world, but forests and wildlife like this, not many countries have.

  • @flowewritharoma it's a beautiful country.. the nature alone is worth seeing(while it's still here and not cut down) but there is more than just beautiful nature

  • vbyuer- what is one sided? What is intellectually dishonest? They spoke to all sides, but definitely have a point. What evidence do you have that the point is wrong?

The most hysterically funny thing that I have read for a long time- "we have nothing to gain from woods overtaking us." I live in LV, we spend weekends in Gulbene, live in Rīga and travel throughout LV- please tell me of these marching trees that will overtake us.

  • @tschmit

The constant claims that cutting woods is bad. That's all the video consists of. They're having lengthy interviews with environmentalists. Later in the video they have a conversation with a couple of officials. And then they're trying to disprove everything the officials said. Fair and balanced? Did you even listen to what they said?

The most ridiculous thing I've heard this year was that "much of Latvia has been left without electricity because of falling trees".

  • @tschmit

The point is fabricated and invalid. State reforestation largely matches the cutting rates. It exceeds the reforestation rates for a limited period of time (5 years altogether) to provide more short-term jobs and additional income for a country that has been shaken with a credit crunch and growing unemployment. Only a deluded hippy can claim that the objective of retaining a cover of forests ABOVE the current level is more important than the quality of life of thousands of people.

  • vbyuer- what is one sided? What is intellectually dishonest? They spoke to all sides, but definitely have a point. What evidence do you have that the point is wrong?

  • I am glad that I can watch al Jazeera on YouTube. American news companies would never show something like this.

  • Everyone knew this will happen, when IMF came in. THere is very little we can do apart from having revolution like in Egypt or civil war against elites.

  • F***** greed and corruption... only problem

  • F** greed and corruption... only problem

  • Sorry, as I get further in the video, it gets quite clear that this unfortunately is just a piece of rubbish journalism and a typical air-filler. Very one sided, intellectually dishonest demagoguery that sometimes gets mixed with quite obvious lies.

    This is a complete disgrace.

  • As a Latvian I can assure you that we have nothing to gain from woods overtaking all of our country. As nice and romantic the intro wouldn't sound, our nature is not unique at all. It's exactly the same as elsewhere in the region in Estonia, Finland, Sweden, Northwestern Russia and so on. Being overtaken by woods has no potential of attracting tourists or gaining any other sort of economic incentives for the Latvian people whatsoever.

  • @vbyuer gtfo - Strazds has dedicated his life to nature issues academically. We should listen to him. I say we demand this to be stopped! We have to process timber before exporting. Why can't we make products instead of just "deporting" our woods as a raw materials? And then we, latvians, buy it as a QUALITY PRODUCT which made from "Baltic birch". It's kind of brand for HI Q for at least 10 years.

  • @kristmas666

Strazds is an environmentalist. He's biased in all of his claims.

It's not clear what needs to be stopped.

This is not a planned economy, the state has no responsibility of processing timber into furniture. If you think it would be profitable, invest, create a company and start doing that. Where's the problem?

  • @vbyuer well it kinda is problem because one must make large investment by creating such company, lots of equipment and one has to be able to predict in longterm what will be the situation after 5, even 10 years to figure out if this business will be profitable. Well, in my opinion, one cannot predict for how long we will have our woods and what will be costs after a while.

  • @kristmas666

And why are you blaming the government for that? The most recent data shows that the growing stock in state-owned territory increased by 12 million m3. The state owns only half of all the woods. 30% is owned by foreigners. It is sad to see that you're instantly blaming the government even though everything points to the fact that LVM is managing our forests efficiently enough, taking into account both the economic and the environmental interests into account.

  • @vbyuer well, i don't blame anyone and for anything. But is it something wrong that i care and question what would be best for my country and for nature in general? I don't pretend that i got answers neither i received them from you, so chill.

  • @kristmas666

Alright then. If you're really striving to get the answers and find out the facts, it should be very easy to see that this report is heavily biased and shouldn't be considered a reliable source. As much as I respect Strazds as an academician, looking at google maps is ridiculous. There's a statistics department in LVM. We have no reason not to believe them.

  • At least we know now that we have a unique forests :)

  • see Latvia on Google Maps, with Satellite view, there's almost every forest crippled with "holes" size of two or more football fields. go on, check it out.

i have no idea, how fast it will grow back, because i haven't seen a single tree planted back into any of these cut down areas. have you?

  • @theguigo

funny, because I my self have planted trees to areas like these...

and hav seen people planting trees.

  • @harijsk kuul, tenx for teh job ;)

Tūjā, Limbažu rajonā, gar šoseju jau ka'du laiku daudz jaunu izcirtumu, bet nekādu rosību tur neredz. es gan nezinu, pēc cik ilga laika jaunos stāda, bet skats enīvei ir skērī + google maps aina ir tiešām skarba.

  • @theguigo rubish talk! When oficial cut downs been done, new trees are planted back! football wield size holes you can see in Amazon jungle, done by americans.

  • @wnxrenton not every time are planted back, there are very much cases, when foreign people by a wood cuts it of an then sells a land with out trees,

but it's not only britain, that is buying our wood scandinavians are doing the same

  • A very good and question-raising feature. From the nature (biodiversity) aspect, the right and crucial issues have been touched upon. So I only hope this will help in bringing stop to the mercantile devastation of Latvian forests.

  • "millions of square kilometres of pristine woodland that support a complex bio"

    ----

blā blā ibio. Whole Latvia has 65 thousand square kilometres.

  • Good thing about Latvian forests is they grow back unlike your Arab oil :). Try putting more of depressive music on your film

  • @superoposums your not watch hyped history channel or dumb propaganda from fox.

  • Come on! In 1930 there was 23% forest cover in Latvia. LVM and privat forest owners work really responsible and renew forests.

  • @CivisRigensis You know that you're talking out of your arse, Cirvis.

  • get the guillotines ready for these psychopathic politicians..

  • I think this is a limit.

  • Latvia has like 25% unemployment because of tight monetary policy (they have retarded right-wing leaders)

  • @pinochet222 what have you been smoking? I, as an Latvian, can say that you have to check your facts.

  • @pinochet222

14%. A huge difference. And, if anything, it only proves that turning to raw material exports is needed to provide more short-term jobs.

  • @pinochet222 You stupid RuSSian chauvinist puppet. It has nothing to do with right wing. There has never ever been a real right wing party in our government. All our politicians are nothing but students of communist indoctrination. There is one nationalist party, which supports nature, protectionism. Currently the government is run by the most disgustingly liberal party we have ever had. Stop vomiting russian propaganda lies about our politics. Better shut the hell up before showing your idiocy.

  • @pinochet222 it's 14% actually.

But no argue about retarded leaders! :D

  • @pinochet222 If we had a leftist government, we'd have to use the same monetary policy, duh.

  • @pinochet222 And? A left-wing government would have to do the same.

By the way, your number is inaccurate (14%), which makes your comment a fail.

  • @pinochet222 Yes, I am Latvian. Most of our leaders are corrupt, but most of them are rundown, like Aigars Kalvitis, the premier who predicted that Latvia will have 7 " Rich " years. Instead of those rich years, he started stealing money which leaded us to this state right now. At least, we still have some very patriotic leaders like, Inmars Lidaka, and others, who's interests are only about making this country better. Anyway, it's good to know that someone who isn't from Latvia knows something.

  • @pinochet222 25% Really? Check your stats, it’s 15%

  • @pinochet222 The unemployment rate is ~18% at the moment, which of course is way too much, but let's not exaggerate. If you call not devaluing the LVL the reason of the unemployment in Latvia you clearly don't know much about the situation. Calling the current government right wing - clearly you don't know anything about the situation. Retarded - maybe slightly. Tho I don't like the idea of "praising the leaders" but calling them completely incompetent would be quite unfair.

  • @pinochet222 A lot of people work illegally, and claim they are unemployed to get benefits and screw over the government . So the real unemployment rates could be about 15% but the problem is that everything is expensive in Latvia and wages are low compared to other EU countries, that's why many choose to live elsewhere
