sad that nat had 2 dance w/herself so much, but..............she's beauty/artist/dancer/singer/songwriter incarnate and i would give a few (if not more) years of my life 2 dance with this amazing woman.
Rob Buck was an amazing guitarist, bar none. I saw him many times back in the day, before fame hit them. He was/is great, such feeling, intensity, this guy could bring it any day of the week. Such a shame he was taken from us, he had so much more to give. As it stands, he gave a TON.
loved this band.. 'cause they were 'comrades at arms'. Great songs, intellegent content; 3x amazing. Individual ingredients making a tremendous outcome.
I find it shocking that people actually criticize Robert Buck's guitar style. Robert Buck was a master of his individual, distinct style, just as Jimmy Page his, just as Eddie Van Halen his. I am really curious what these detractors consider good guitar playing.
These comments are slightly troubling to me to say the least.Calling Buck's technique "average"?? This sound was very popular amongst the bands of this time and genre. Not to mention the comments clearly are from ppl that don't get the band or what they stood for.One of the most misunderstood bands. They refused to buckle down and try and write a hit for radio. So They called it the "alternative".It pains me that we may never see bands like this in our lifetime.
@lifeacholic I have to agree about this being 'average'. 'Good average' but not worthy of titling the vid after. Better sound quality from the recording would help Robert's case.
If you are interested in the awesome guitar work in 'Carnival' you might want to check if it is Jen Turner playing there, the original studio/tour lead for that album.
She is awesome in this performance though seems a little shy.
@cubfan08 people honestly think that???? As a personal friend of every single member of the band past and present, I can say that they were NEVER an item
Hammersmith Odeon 1989.......wonderful concert. Nathalie Merchant does get very engrossed in her stage performance. Maybe that is why she does not look at Robert Buck during the song. I am fascinated and saddened by Billkwando observations re the demise of Robert Buck. Thank you for enlightening me on this sad episode. Still a wonderful, poignant song, with great impact.
Has anyone thought about the fact that this song is about her disgust with an alcoholic she's in a relationship with, and during the entire performance she's either staring at, or turning her back to Robert Buck.....the guy who died of liver failure and whose funeral she didn't go to?
@1971Goldtop Nope, that was their excuse to advertise their stupid guitar lessons. They would've put the same message before a Barry Manilow song (and probably have).
Is the guitarist in the background the one who actually played solo/lead and is he playing a Robin Ranger or Robin Rawhide? I can't be certain because the camera never focuses on him but that headstock looks very Robin, great guitars although somewhat unknown.
@oeyesea .. Hi , The man playing the guitar solo is Robert Buck the guitarist of the 10,000 maniacs . The guy in the back white suspenders ,gold tie, black shirt , black pants, white pants . David Letterman says thank you sir to him at the end and he gives a little wave,.His name was Robert Buck ...
@oeyesea It does look like a Robin guitar. Tough to tell. This clip is around 1987 and I think he played some custom guitars at later points. Something to look up!
@Laika57 When you say you are a Bucco fan are you talking about the Pittsburgh Pirates or the Tampa Bay Buc`s ? Either way I am from Pittsburgh and live in the Tampa Bay area. I would prob say you are speaking of the Pirates ..
Sorry bohs 1984... You are 1/2 correct, while most of the member on stage are with the Late Nite band the two main variables of the Maniacs are on the stage the "guitar" solo you are whining about is played by Robert Buck (died 2000) the guy in the back with the black shirt white shoes . He was the actual sound of the Maniacs like The Edge is the sound of U2 Buck made the maniacs what they were ,he was great . I cant help playing this over and over with Natalie changing up the words at the end!!
Talk about mislabled. I love the band (even though this NM, NOT 10,000 Maniacs), She was performing with the Late Nite Band, not the Maniacs. And while I always like good overall playing, this was hardly an awesome guitar solo. If you want to mention a stand out performance comment on how great Will Lee is on bass here. Anyway, I kept waiting for the AWESOME guitar solo and all I got was a pretty basic melody line.
i remember living on e. 4th st. with some bandmates and we were watching this letterman broadcast as it happened. the song certainly got our attention. thanks for posting this treat!
Who's the other dude in the foreground playing rhythm? John Lombardo had left before In My Tribe, so it can't be him. Also, why is he in the foreground and poor Rob was punted into the background behind Steve?
Awesome guitar solo was, ironically, missing from this particular performance, likely due to the time restrictions of performing on "Dave". There is a guitar solo in the full version of this tune, and, the guitarist in this band is considered to be pretty good. But, the only reason to see this video is for Natalie Merchant, and an unusual look for her. Somebody did her hair real good.
Thanks for posting this...i was in college when this album came out and I immediately fell in love with Natalie Merchant-so beautiful, talented, just a good soul. Many years later, I named my daughter after her and hoped that she would grow up to be as creative and unique and at eleven years old, she is just that!
This was around 1988 on the David Letterman show. Used to have a "Beta" video recording of it and then my dad recorded the "McNeil/Lehrer News Hour" over it.
@boomslangdog This was originally broadcast no later than 1987, because i was still living in the east village with my bandmates and we caught this original broadcast.
i remember the day rob buck died like it was yesterday.......sad day for the world of music...he will be forever remembered as a pioneer in abstract guitar styles in which many modern guitarist base their whole style off of...rock on rob
I remember this beautiful performance, even more now, with the passing of Robert Buck. It was his guitar work that at first caught my attention to the band. The album, In My Tribe.....simply amazing to me, even now it catches my heart.
I listened to the vinyl record and "Don't Talk" put the stamp on that first side. I used to love the intro. A great band. Really special music, great lyrics and here is Nat and Robert again on Letterman. It's a special special moment.
He died. Liver failure if memory serves me, some rare disease - Natalie and the others either set up or do fund raising for a charity for it. He is sadly missed, one of the best guitarists I ever saw.
Uhm, no, it wasnt alcoholism - unless you know something I dont I assume you are thinking as it was liver failure ergo alcohol problem. I am unable to actually find the name of what he died from but Robert was told almost two years before he died that he had a problem liver - this was the reason the rest of the band set up the 'gotta buck' charity to raise money for the illness. And for what it is worth, as an alcoholic, yes it is an illness if not a disease!
I hate to dis' any video (cause its great to live all bands live), but I don't know know as I'd call Robert Buck's solo as "awesome" .... also a stretch to call this 10k maniacs.....more like "Natalie, Robert, and the Late Night Orchestra." Sorry, just my opinion.
Ok.... I don't have the best vision, but if you can point out Jerome Augustyniak, Dennis Drew, and/or Steve Gustafson, I'll retract my comment. It's only 4k maniacs ... Its like having Jerry Garcia & Bob Weir on and calling them "The Grateful Dead". Sorry, just my own opinion.
I have been listening too and watching music fo over 45 years now. Natalie is the only female i will put up in line with Janis Joplin. I still think she should do a reunion with the maniacs in memory of Robert Buck. Bring back the great music of the late 80's and early to mid 90's. Shakespeare Sister, Nirvana, Lilith Fair, WHFSital, 120 Minutes on MTV, Til Tuesday, 4 NonBlondes, Pearl Jam, Blind Melon, etc.
@dtsecofr21 It's the bass I think he's talking about. Well, that's what I'm listenening to mostly alomg with Nats' voice which is spot on as usual. Does she ever miss a beat?
This looks like Natalie Merchant backed up by the World's Most Dangerous Band. Maybe the lead guitar player was from 10,000 Maniacs? I find this to be interesting.
Not sure what you mean by interesting, the band is 10000 maniacs - there is dennis drew on keyboards, robert buck in the background, john lomard and although they are difficult to make out both steve and jerome are there too. Maybe you are being funny and i dont get it?
she always comes out shy, then once she gets comfortable she lets it all go! Seriously, the longer she's on the more clothing comes off...every time. Once she ended up with just her blouse and skirt on, shoes off, hair band off, jacket off, scarf off... I was like...keep going woman!! ha ha
yeah, dave has turned into a stiff ed sullivan. strangely enough, conan has turned into an early 80's version of dave. if only dave could go back to the silly wacky stuff like skits, drawings, and failed inventions
Careful, you sound like your parents. There is plenty of good music out there, you just have to search for it as opposed to being spoon fed like the ol' days.
@tk423b Very good question, my guess is that younger people don't have the same sentiment, younger generations have grew up with violence and decepcions and that kills the magic to create. different and new times are here..... not so good !!
great guitar solo indeed. i remember seeing the band with Rob Buck and i would just look at him and he would look back; i realized he was a spiritual man before i ever heard about his affiliation with mutka.
I was applying a little rule of sorcery: never make things obvious (note the mispelling). actually, it is spiritual teacher of siddha yoga from India known as Muktananda. He died a couple of decades ago. Known for transmitting the shakti (divine energy), Muktananda was a well-known and respected disciple of Swami Nityananda. He got into a little hairy place when accused in the West of dabbling in sexual relations with disciples. Oh, Baba, no!
Dressed like that shows style. She is as sexy and alluring as any scantily clad tramp on TV.
Actually SHE is alluring... but the scantily clad are just undressed.

@dtsecofr21 Your opinion is wrong--the solo is one of my favorites all time---just because its not flashy doesn't mean its not a great performance...

@dtsecofr21 why is she wearing a carpet for a dress though?

Thanks for posting this. One of my favorite performances. I've been searching for this ever since I first saw it when it originally aired.

That's Sid McGuinness on lead guitar, as competent and skilled as always.

*sigh* Takes me back to the painful, powerful high school crush I had on this woman.
Good God.
Great solo by Robert Buck -as always.

This looks like Natalie Merchant backed up by the World's Most Dangerous Band. Maybe the lead guitar player was from 10,000 Maniacs? I find this to be interesting.
shawnogram 2 years ago
Not sure what you mean by interesting, the band is 10000 maniacs - there is dennis drew on keyboards, robert buck in the background, john lomard and although they are difficult to make out both steve and jerome are there too. Maybe you are being funny and i dont get it?

My bad. I just didn't watch the video that closely.

Natalie has great presence
robi2000 2 years ago
she always comes out shy, then once she gets comfortable she lets it all go! Seriously, the longer she's on the more clothing comes off...every time. Once she ended up with just her blouse and skirt on, shoes off, hair band off, jacket off, scarf off... I was like...keep going woman!! ha ha

Agreed but you give DL TOO much credit - a quarter sane in the 1980s, followed by complete moral-comedic talent disintegration.
Back when I was in HS, the senior on the JV team was automatically made the team captain. It was a dubious honor.
Now that DL's beating Conan in the ratings, he's the new JV captain.

yeah, dave has turned into a stiff ed sullivan. strangely enough, conan has turned into an early 80's version of dave. if only dave could go back to the silly wacky stuff like skits, drawings, and failed inventions

even though the violent hair flipping at 1:53 probably was not spontaneous... it was still pretty cool.

@tk423b
Careful, you sound like your parents. There is plenty of good music out there, you just have to search for it as opposed to being spoon fed like the ol' days.
jessegpresley 1 year ago 2
@tk423b Very good question, my guess is that younger people don't have the same sentiment, younger generations have grew up with violence and decepcions and that kills the magic to create. different and new times are here..... not so good !!

great guitar solo indeed. i remember seeing the band with Rob Buck and i would just look at him and he would look back; i realized he was a spiritual man before i ever heard about his affiliation with mutka.
Sageking4 2 years ago
who or what is Mutka?

I was applying a little rule of sorcery: never make things obvious (note the mispelling). actually, it is spiritual teacher of siddha yoga from India known as Muktananda. He died a couple of decades ago. Known for transmitting the shakti (divine energy), Muktananda was a well-known and respected disciple of Swami Nityananda. He got into a little hairy place when accused in the West of dabbling in sexual relations with disciples. Oh, Baba, no!
