The UK Armed Forces need to pull their fingers out!. i agree, but what i think the mission is (or should be) is to set up an environment which allows the Afghan government to get on it's feet and get it's army ready to take on the taliban, thats what we did in Iraq and now we are pulling out and turning iraq over to the government. If the same works in afghanistan then the taliban will be defeated because they wouldn't be fighting the "invaders" they would be fighting afghans and wouldn't have a cause anymore.

The Mongols never built any solid fortifications and out of fear of being occupied by peoples that did settle and thus would be able to conquer step by step the Mongols' lands, they ventured out far as they dared on preemptive strikes to reduce enemy numbers and instill fear.

Well the British got destroyed there in the 1800's. And they destroyed the Russians aswell. Your perception of these "ragheads" is exactly the reason people think they can take Afghanistan. The taliban beat the British before.
