Thank goodness this was never released in America in the Playstation format. The language barriers would've made the translation horribly mangled. Just look at how many typos are in Dragon Warrior 7, not to mention the fact that the dialog feels awkward. :S
ah, good point. The translation in the DS version is pretty good imo, even though alot of people hate the accents that people got. (I'm cool with them, though the people from Alena's country can be hard to understand)
Actually, this might be the case for all the Dragon Warrior releases in the US (except 7).
Think about it. In the time of the NES, translation was terrible. The first Dragon Warrior should've been a barely-understandable mess. But the dialog was perfectly-readable, although in "thee"s and "thou"s. Either they rewrote the whole thing (plausible), or Enix actually had a decent translation team. It stood out in the mass of "congladuration"s and "happy end"s.
It sounds like Godzilla vs Biollante's "Scramble March". Oh wait, same composer.

how would language barriers mess up the PS version that we didn't get, but not the DS version which we did?

Well, because they probably got a better translation team, or they rewrote the dialog.
