You really don't have to spend the time making a selection first. Just create your adjust layer, and make your initial adjustment. The whole photo will be adjusted at first. Now make sure your foreground color is white, and background color is black. Then "select all" (selecting the whole canvas), then push "delete". This takes away the effects of the adjustment. Then just paint with the brush where you want the effect. You can now make further adjustments.

You need to learn how to work non-destructively. A H&S adjustment layer with a mask based on that selection would have been a much more elegant solution, that allows full control over the selection and color, not just now, but also in possible future edits and neither does it damage the original. You teach people the wrong way!

P.S, don't tell me that there are many ways to do things in Photoshop, because I've just explained what the advantages are, unless you can show me that your method has more advantages, then I'm more than willing to admit my mistake.

Thanks for the tutorial. I don't have any version of Photoshop and am trying to decide what to get. Do you know if you're able to do this with all versions of PS? Would Elements do it?

I know it sounds cheap, but it seems crazy for me to buy an expensive memory hogging program when all I want to do is adjust backgrounds and whiten teeth.
