  • NO LAYNE NO CHAINS

  • One hundred years from now, this song will be as relevant as it was in 1994 and is now. It is a timeless song that will and should be remembered untill the end of time. Fantasic song by a stellar band!!!

  • Dude Layne's pain is so felt through songs like this. I remember seeing them do this song Unplugged on MTV and just watching how sick he was. Of course this is all looking back on it, but that makes it so much more meaningful! I miss Layne so much and to this day am greatful for this music that truly got me though life as a teenager.

  • Life is hard.....

  • If u like alt. rock or grunge check out my channel and hear something new if like plz subscribe, I could use a few more

  • This tune is so relaxing.Never gets old

  • opiates are soo hard to kick man I was scorin heroin in bakersfield everyday and moved to Sacramento to get away from it and my problems followed me here lol. I gave into that notion of I can only be happy with heroin/oxy and that my friends is a state of mind that does not easily go away

  • Lost My Brother To This In 2004....Not A Day Goes By That I Don't Miss Him.

    Love You Mike.

  • @1965cece Sorry to hear that man :(

  • probably Jerry's best solo..

  • @cowboysfromhelll Layne is great and everything, but Jerry's solo makes this song for me.

  • This is my first memory. I don't have very many early memories but this one stuck.

It was around mid 1970's, I was about 4 years old. My parents were living in San Fransisco for a short time and I was out in somebody's back yard, I don't remember who's back yard, but there was a jar full of dead flies of every color imaginable. I didn't know dead and dying flies had so many different types of colors on their bodies, but they did. I still can't see those colors It was just my first memory.

  • so many artists in the 90's revealed themselves, and in turn we found ourselves. amen

  • @sr52712- Gotta love the 90's. It was definitely like the best decade for rock and rap Chains. Tupac. Nirvana. People who actually had something to say came to the surface. They live on through their words, their music.

  • toooooooooooooooooooo good

  • everytime i listen to this song it brings back like 20 different memories and all sorts of feelings. this Song and many of AiC songs are really powerful and intense. RIP Layne your music will live forever

  • layne was raped by time....

  • This song really hits home for me...so fucking deep

  • This song is the best

  • One of my

     favorites.

  • wish it was longer

  • music means nothing unless it makes you feel something, being numb is worse than being dead... Layne could not enjoy life unless he had heroin, he couldn't be his own and now hes dead. "If I can't be my own, I'd feel better dead."

    RIP Layne

  • forever one of my fav songs...lyrics, feeling, just something....sometimes it picks me up sometimes it takes me down but it always makes me feel something.

  • this is fuckin beautiful

  • Great song! Amazing Album!

  • I do not need anybody but this song.....

  • I imagine myself in my world, all alone, nothing to worry about, it's my dark world, and it's my home, i could hear this song till the day i die. I REALLY FEEL THIS SONG, AND IT TAKES ME TO ANOTHER DIMENSION.

  • @SicknessGun I agree with you......I like this other dimension and do not want to ever come back again...EVER............because I am tired if this superficial life with its superficial people....

  • @mercurymagicseal you talking about music wise or people wise

  • @MrGrunge1991 A lot of people and music are very superficial to me and it makes me very sad. Not everyone but a good amount are....and it seems to be getting worse with shows like the kardashions etc. There are some people who can not afford food and others who spend 20,000 on a handbag..know what I mean?

  • 10 people are missguided.....

  • This is beauty. Music that actually feels. Love that hurts.

  • this IS freedom

  • Aic without layne ?? Hmm

  • @whiskeyoo7 Give them a chance! The new album is phenomenal!

  • no bad story for me i just love this fucking song ;) chin up

  • The first time i heard this song, it made me cry, i remember when i was a kid and everyone tried to make me understand that i was going the wrong way and what i did was all wrong, the thing is i was being my self doing stuff i liked to do,listening the music i liked, i feel every word in the song.. it's like.. i don't know, i was ment to hear this song this is part of my life, if i can't be my own i'd feel better dead. THANK YOU ALICE IN CHAINS, YOU SUPPOURTED ME WHEN NO ONE HAD.

  • Layne will never know, or hell, maybe he does now. When my brother and I buried a good friend and life spun out of control for me. This song was the light in a dark world that helped me build the life I have now. Thanks to Layne, I'm all grown up. As of tomorrow, it will be nine years I have been clean and sober. I have a life I am proud of and kids that I adore, but if it hadn't been for the voice, I wouldn't have made it. Thanks Layne.

  • @Buckyfanatic Incredible

  • @Buckyfanatic -Good for you!!! I may not know you, yet I am proud..

Take care. For I am a Layne Lover myself.

  • @Buckyfanatic That's fantastic. And everything. Cheers friend. I already like you.

  • @Buckyfanatic from a man, soldier, brony, and christian. live on brother

  • Unfortunately the words from this song are the complete and unfiltered TRUTH!

  • Simple song done with a heart and soul musicians can't seem to find these days... one of the best from any genre.

  • This whole fucking album is really amazing.

  • @Bob8199 I have always loved this album. My wife and I listen to this album on repeat whenever we drive a certain road in northern Michigan known the "Tunnel of Trees" along the coast of Lake Michigan. It is one of the few times we need not say a word, but only enjoy the world around us. Thank you AIC.

  • I first heard this song from my niece, then again , not much later, from my daughter... then I learned to play and sing it to myself... I find it soothing and still do.

  • ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS OF THE 90'S

  • @dannooll you shouldnt make commennts like that on a Layne Staley page...They were all glorius...I aint trying to offend no one but really you can't talk like that on a page of staley fans

  • This should be on everyones top 10 list of songs to kill yourself to.

  • @codimis AIC songs take up about 9 out of the top 10 songs haha

  • @codimis I go with the top 10 songs yes...Surely have never thought about suicide...

  • This song............... Heavenly

  • @dannooll you can just FUCK OFF!!!!!

  • the song I always play

  • @dannooll Facelift rules, dude. Man in the Box, Sea of Sorrow, It Ain't Like That, We Die Young, Real Thing, and don't even get me started on Love, Hate, Love. It's a great album,

  • One of the best A.I.C songs in my opinion. R.I.P Layne!!!

  • With an ordinary voice this would be an amazing song.

With Layne´s voice however... it becomes perhaps the best and most beautiful song ever written.

  • this song and black by pearl jam are 2 of the greatest songs ever recorded, they grasp my very soul every time I listen to them

  • @dannooll They never put out a bad song. =P Unless you count that "Love song, take one" thing as a song. xD

  • R.I.P. MIKE STAR

  • 10 ppl can suck my nuts while humming nutshell....mmm mmmmm mmmmmm.

  • @Driveshaft12345 lol thats a fucked up mental image i've got right now haha

  • @Driveshaft12345 those 11 people (as it is now) I bet they're a right bunch of cunts. Shall we track them down, dowse them in petrol, set them on fire as we pour liquid prozac in our eye sockets whilst listening to nutshell?

  • @Jaoric Thats a bit harsh...I am good with just a hummer

  • only 276,000 people have played this? wth?

  • This song for me is one of the best ever

  • AIC was great, thats in a nutshell.

  • Its really hard to come by a song that moves you like this song does......it freaking barely has any lyrics but it screams a whole world of meaning

  • I am in total agreement. This song is amazing

  • i come home from work. i think about how i should be doing something else with my life. i sit in my chair. i get a heavy buzz. i turn this song up until my ears bleed. my soul stirs in my chest.

  • nutshell what a lovely song

  • This song really plays on the emotions. I feel kind of sad when I listen to it. It's really melancholy.

  • i heard this song the other day. i spaced out and felt like a baby, almost cried. i asked my parents why i felt that way. they told me that it was the verry first song i heard when i was a baby. this song means the world to me. Thank you Alice in Chains from the bottom of my soul.

  • This is the most beautiful work of art. When i hear this song, i don't hear Layne Staleys voice singing, i hear his soul. By far the greatest musician that i have ever had the privilege to listen to. Alice in Chains will forever touch my soul and forever be my favorite band.

R.I.P: Layne Stayley and Mike Starr

I hope you guys are jammin in heaven.

  • @firecrotch6000

Wow! That was deep what you said. I am moved by your comment :)

  • @Alize101586 Thank you, well its the truth!

  • The very best inspiration.

  • how is it that no matter how great the song and no matter how deep the meaning of it and how emotionally impacting it is you always have atleast two people fighting over something that doesnt pretain to the song in anyway shape or form

  • i cant sleep over this song! that is called influence!

  • anyone else think the unplugged version is better than the album version?

  • I'm 51 years old and every time I hear this song I almost cry......

  • i still remember how great AIC was with layne. probably my favorite one from them, def a like on my list. even so, this entire album was terrific for just being an acoustic. SO much talent in that grunge band.

  • 10 dislikes? Seriously? Wow I'd hate to hear your song list.

  • This was one of my favs to play live. I was not in AIC .We played local shows. This was a wonderful song to play .

  • I Don't Care What Kind of Music You Like(Rap,Heavy Metal,Pop,Country,Ect.), How Do You Not Like This Song? It's Just Sad.

  • this song and rotten apple are my two favs from this album

  • One of top 5 Alice in Chains songs, period. So beautifully crafted; Layne's voice is flawless, he sings it seemingly effortlessly, so beautiful, eerie really. You have to wonder how much of this song was from his life. Even after all this time, this song is so profoundly real. And yes, I find myself listening to this song over and over again. Its no accident. Some songs are just that much better than others. Brilliant.

  • i absolutely love this song i literally almost cry it makes me think about just....... everything good or bad just what ever is on my mind

  • @12ANC21 neverming there i go

  • bass player in my band always grabs the guitar after some booze and we all sing this tune

  • r.i.p mr staley , your music is a comfort of many lost soul

  • always, always makes me cry.

  • Fuck the dislike button, fuck Bieber, or Lady Gaga, this is about Layne, and his pain...don't forget the words of a true artist ppl...

  • I cant believe that theres 10 people who have hit the unlike button!!!???!!!

  • I camn believe that theres 10 people who have hit the unlike button!!!???!!!

  • I honestly don't think Layne knew what he was writing when he wrote those words. I honestly think it was God speaking through him.

And when you find out the truth about what is being done to us, politically, culturally, spiritually...

THEN you will really understand what those words mean.

Hymn for a dying people, a dying nation.

  • Those who find this song find freedom

  • @darkmanoo6 Well said darkman...I put this song to a video I made of my son. I am just waiting for him to find "freedom"

  • Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuckkkkk this is to much true for me....fuckin song breaks me everytime....

  • i cant help myself from getting a lump in my throat when they play this unplugged and Layne appears and there is an uproar of applause. What a sweet guy. RIP Layne Staley

  • I like the album version, but thumbs up if you agree that the Unplugged performance is the best way to hear this song, the emotion and just musical talent in that performance was just amazing! Rock on guys, best band EVER

  • i miss old alice in chains

  • There are no words to describe how amazing this song is.

  • @WarlockAshlii I agree. What a terrific song!!

  • @WarlockAshlii Agreed. It's a shame that it's so short... I must have replayed it at least 30 times already and still can't get enough

  • @WarlockAshlii theres no known language that could be used for that

  • I really like this version on jar of flies but its still nothing compared to the one on their unplugged album or the whole album itself

  • Jar of Flies, best musical piece of the 90s.

  • On 1/1/06 my life was changed and I haven't been remotely the same since. I have listen to this song everyday since then. This song speaks to me on a very personal level. Only if Layne knew the impact he had on people's lives. I wish I could hug him and thank him for helping all of us through troubled times.

  • Eight idiots viewed the wrong video

  • alice in chains...u guys are the fuckin shit! u rock harder than any band out there. keep it up

  • Damnit Layne music needs you man.

  • Well, we know one thing, there are at least 8 douche bags in the world.

  • Makes my hairs stand on end... every time!

  • 8 dislikes is a disgrace to the world

  • dont get me wrong, I love their unplugged session but for me this version I like a lot better. Not as slow, but still the same message.

  • GIVES ME THE CHILLS

  • Best song ever.. I always listened to this when I felt like shit. from early 90s till now, It lets u know that everyone has problems on the inside also but can't explain it, only in a nutshell where your true emotions rest

  • Orgasmic music

  • Their new album comes nothing close to this music. Those new tracks are just pathetic, compared to this.

  • @TheRockinRowl

In comparison, maybe yes, but I still think the new album's badass in its own way. The new singer sounds a little like Chris Cornell from Soundgarden, so it's sortof odd to have Jerry singing with that.

  • AMAZINGGGG <3

  • i wish i can get likes on my comments.. til then i will keep the likes going for everyone else :) BTW alice in chains always have and will always be legendary

  • stop getting so deep into everything. just listen to the damn song

  • My all time favorite song! I go through phases with music genres etc sometimes... but this song has always been a constant both in life and in music for me

  • Call me intolerant if I hate music that talks about being down when the person that's written it never faced any real trials. When they never faced addiction, or the death of someone close to their heart, or were abused. I don't know what the hell you have to be down about when your parents are both alive and supportive, you've got a good girlfriend, and you're not hooked on something heavy.

Fucking love Alice in Chains. Pisses me off to see the shitty music claiming to have been inspired by em.

  • @MnMzProductions hahaha yeah that is what i am thinking when im hearing alot of pop punk.. It is like holy shit my parents just paid for college and bought me a car but i want to slit my wrists.. Alice in Chains were far from this and made songs that i have listened to for years and will continue to for many years to come

  • i personally might like the unplugged version better

  • The chance to have a band like Alice in Chains again is smaller than Jesus walking on water

  • Amazing band...one of my all time favorites...

  • i need to get me a drink and some food cause im going to be listening to this song for awhile

  • Comment removed

  • R.I.P. Layne

  • How the fuck does someone vote down this song!?

  • @freeofjesus bc actually deep inside they dislike themselves. lol

  • The singer died? I have not listened to this since I was 18, 16 years ago.

  • @caresaboutall Layne Staley died April 2002 of a drug overdose, a speedball (heroin/cocaine).... so incredibley sad.

  • @caresaboutall Where have you been man. im 13 and know that. Layne died when i was 5 when he did

  • How come every time I listen to this song... I have to hit the replay button like 6 times before I can get the courage to find another equally as awesome song.. which is hard to come by!

  • @khadiaxoxo well said, just awesome and without any real comparison.

  • @khadiaxoxo so true. its a repeater :) best AiC tune if u asked me.

  • Sums up my life.... in a Nutshell.

  • "and yet I fight, this battle all alone..." that lyric rips at my soul every time

  • Thanks for posting. I wish he was still with us. Awesome singer.

  • God DAMN IT I love this song!

  • Beautiful Man, Beautiful

  • OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN-THIS SONG DESERVE

  • the replay button is getting raped by my cursor over and over again.

  • How was Nirvana the biggest band of the 90's...they were magical...but just fucking listen to Alice in chains......this song almost makes me fucking cry.......no other band can make me that emotional about a simple song.

  • @wwemattlord1 so true it is awesome, going through hard times and this song calls out to me.

  • @danramsay1 Very true man.

  • @wwemattlord1 How anyone could say that Nirvana had a bigger impact than Alice In Chains confuses me. Alice in Chains were the first and biggest advocate for Grunge Rock.
