  • what a deek head for cycling that fast when the bus stop blocked his view.

  • unluck you did all you could, the rider that hit you could have missed you if he dident panic, i know this spot well, a few weeks ago i hit 43mph coming off the bridge, i think ill slow down for the busstop from now on. why is it people with helmate cams get all the drama? iv been cycling in and around edin for 6 months now and not had any real bother?

  • road every time, i dunno where this cycle on the pavement lark comes from, used to be th epolis would tug you for it

  • I nearly did this is a small tunnel, I was dreaming and didn't expect an oncoming cyclist, for some reason I moved to the right in his path! Thankfully he did too! Really odd, I Always keep left but rode at the guy. Fixation is an odd one!

  • Ouch, I hope you've recovered now. I know vis is bad there but he seemed to have plenty of time to see you and did nothing other than veer towards you.

Just before Christmas I had a similar one at Crammond Brig, the bloke said he assumed that I'd wobble to the right but I stayed on the left side (ouch). He said he'd done it before I wonder if that was it?

  • lol

  • Hope you are recovered now. Another reason I avoid bike paths !

  • You can see his head track you into the impact - he fixated on you and so he hit you. (motor)bikers call this "fixating" - when you learn to ride a bike they teach you to look past the hazard and not at the hazard, or else you will actually ride towards the hazard! (you go where you look - an effect which is much more noticeable on a motorbike).

  • Oooyah - even looking at that is painful. It's a very poor piece of pathway design, especially if someone's going to appear around the bus-stop at that speed. Very poor judgement by the guy who hit you - not only because of the damage to you, but he didn't seem to take into account that there may have been anyone standing around waiting for a bus that he couldn't see as he flew around a blind corner.

  • oooooh bad luck, that one looked painfull. The bus stop is an awful location. I commute along the canal and I am amazed at the the people who charge around blind bend under brigdes, hope you and the bike were.

PS what camera system do you use?

  • That does look like a very nasty accident.

In my own opinion both of you are at fault in different ways.

The cyclist that hit you was clearly going way to fast especially on a pavement. I slow down near bus stops just incase someone steps out from it.

I think you could of slowed down or stopped after the first person overtook the bus stop becausehe almost hit you aswell. Looking at the video you would of seen that cyclist before he came around the bus stop. Not having a go at all mate

  • Well, I did slow down from 20mph to about walking speed!

I think my mistake was not to go for the bushes (especially since I ended up there anyway!). I just didn't expect a second rider to do the same thing so quickly after the first - what bad luck!

  • Yeah i can understand being a cyclist myself i thought id give a fair opinion for both sides. It was good you went close to the bushes becoz it allows more visability around the bus stop so just as you say 'bad luck' also a softer landing lol ;)

I prefer the pavement to the road because its less demanding. Blindspots such as these i will take caution with and slow down/turn wide around it.

  • I dont agree with you Samandaaron. EF acted accordingly and safely from this angle, the other guy was at fault.

Your reasoning for seeing the other cyclist earlier is specious as you are relying on random time events to link up and you cant predict based on what you cant see or see fully.

  • That looks really nasty. Given the bus stop limiting visibility he really shouldn't have been coming down at that speed - racing to catch up with the rider in front I reckon, the old Tour de Commute. Utter muppet.

Glad to hear it sounds like you came away 'relatively' unscathed because that really did look bad.

  • Ive watched it a few times, he was looking at the 2 people at the bus stop, he was probably making sure they didn't move, he looks up in shock when he realises he's heading straight for another cyclist.

  • OH .. btw , I hope the camera is ok !!

  • I assume the keep left rule applies to bi-directional cycle lanes, where did he leave his observation and reaction skills, he should have been able to stop in half that distance.

Why, when I use my headcam does nothing ever happen, the minute I take it off the roads turn into a scene out of mad max !!

  • you can see him panic brake and lock the rear, coulda almost definately steered outa that if he didn't poop

  • Ouch! Visibility for the on coming cyclist is pretty bad but not that bad, what a plank!

  • Bloody hell that was nasty!

Hope you heal up soon. Bloody newbie cyclists getting the speed-freak-taste was it?

Send the link to the Dept for Transport road safety email and tell them this is why shared paths dont work...

..imagine if he'd hit a ped, too. It'd be another Jason Howard in the press.

  • Ouch! What a complete muppet that cyclist was! I have to say, I don't have a great deal of sympathy for the other cyclist if he come off worse. Hopefully it will be a lesson learned.

  • Looks like a grabbed a handful of brake which caused him to straighten up. Maybe if he'd stayed of the anchors he could have got round.

I'm glad i'm paranoid about such occurances happening on my commute, potential black spots get given a cautious berth.

  • good thing he was wearing day glow

  • ohh. That must have hurt. He needs to slow down. He came around that corner too fast. What did he say to you after it.

  • What did he have to say for himself? Is it your cloak of invisibility?

  • I think he hit his head, he didn't have too much to say for a while (he did apologise, of course).

I got his shoulder right in my throat - the whole side of my jaw felt like it had exploded - plus his bar mangled my right hand a little.

Nevertheless I put it down to experience! Forget helmets and wear throat armour!

  • OUCH, the speed he was coming around at too, he didnt even seem to slow down any, appart from put his leg out somewhat. What was the rest of the video like? that would be entertaining. Nice quality camera too, what is it

  • Jesus!!! I hope you're OK now? He looked like he suffered from target fixation

  • I wonder what that would ahve been like if you were on your lowracer recumbent? Better or worse for you?

  • Ouch! At first I thought you were on the wrong side of the path... but then realized you are in the UK... so the guy who hit you was on the wrong side. Ouch!

  • You alright m8? I used to do downhill racing (pro) i learnt that trees hurt alot less than most other things you can hit ;-)

  • I suppose the important question is, how is the bike :D

  • The back wheel is a bit floppy, bizarrely! I think he must have got his front wheel dug into it somehow.

Luckily I don't run a back brake or I'd have been walking home!

  • Ouch. That must have hurt.

  • What a moron! You alright? I saw something like this happen at very, very slow speed earlier...but they were ped-cyclists on the pavement so I just chuckled. Not nearly as painful looking.
