huh. i opened my ps2 today because it isnt reading ps1 games anymore. ive opened it before to clean the laser and stuff. so i did it without opening the tray and tried opening the tray whilst open. and it would get stuck at like 1 inch and go back in after 2 seconds. with a lot of fiddling around i managed to get the tray disattached to see if anything were catching it and to put it in the right path. after a long time i managed to get it back in. and it still wouldnt open. part1

yay! thank you so much, this worked for me ... my PS2 is a slightly different generation than the one you show, so I didn't have the little screws to undo, but the same little sliding white piece with the knob at the end that needed to go into the track on the tray ....

I opened my ps2 and the part that aligns with the track (the little white cylindrical piece) is broken off at the very end. I have no idea where it went and if i replaced that I think the drive would work fine. Any suggestions on how to fix it? -- or what i need to do so -- Thanks

It won't cause cancer in your eye. It's a very weak laser and if you look at it for a while it will only cause a little blind spot for a couple second sort of like when you look at the sun but a lot weaker. Now if you stare at it for a couple minutes that's a different story but I think most people have the common sence not to do that.

Quick thing the ps2 50001 series model does not have the screws because sony changed them later on in the ps2 life time so if you have a 50001 it will not be useful. for the people who have a 39001 or something in the 30001's this is a sure way to fix your tray. Great vid

That can be only half the problem for some drives,

if this dosn't work for you:

the two screw on the tray can be too tight,

loosen the back screw a little

loosen the front a lot.

not sure why this works, but it gets jammed otherwise.

yeah... that happens usually when that trail brokens... so when u close the tray the white thing that goes all the way following the trail gets out of position at the end and it has to go on the trail becouse that white thing is the switch the PS2 recognises when the tray is open or closed. I know that becouse the same thing happen to me! Sorry 4 bad english :P

I gotta admit, PS2 slimline is a lot better, as it doesn't have a tray. My old PS2 screwed up to quick, and i didn't treat it like shit, just started to ignore disks and the tray went really slow. Slimline is way better, but it does heat up and the back where the mains adapter goes in, it gets really hot after playing for about an hour...

I don't know, but it sounds like a reader problem to me. Do you hear it spinning the disc after you put it in? Like I said I'd guess that it's either an issue with the disc reading laser or with some communication connection in your system
