Some of you people need to read some serious history before commenting something that you think "you know" . Now since you wanna argue over something like this, because im ready, i hope you have enough facts such as this history, to prove me wrong.
@BobbyMan21 Not quite, there were around 7000 present, but once the Persians discovered the route to flank the Greeks, most of the Greek forces retreated. The rear guard, that is the guard to protect the pulling back of the majority of Greece's forces, was only about 1000 strong. The 7000 wouldn't have been a rear guard as they were holding the ground forces while the Athenian navy attempted to stop Xerxes' supply train in the Aegean.
also, the other "traitor" was a greek named ephialtes. most of the credit was given to this man, though he was not alone. ephialtes is now a synonym for traitor in greece, much like benedict arnold is in america
herodotus was known to buff up numbers, but he didnt say 2 million, he said 5. however, that was counting the support troops, which never fought in the battle. there is no "agreed on" number, but the average that comes up is around 2 million, counting the 10,000 immortals. however, Xerxes I could not have sent more than 250,000 at one time.the greeks were estimated to be around 5-7000, for sure only 300 spartan warriors. the last day, all but the 300 and 1000 phoacians left by order of Leonidas.
@QuesoJake54 Actually the Phocian's were guarding the path that Xerxes used to flank the Greeks. It was the Thebans who stayed, because if they left they were the first city state to be passed through on the way to Athens. So it was either fight in the narrow pass, or fight from their homes.
wrong lol. Greeks 2000 - thebans and arcadians 300 spartans Persian force 90,000 immortals- 10000 Casualties greeks 2300 estimated some may have escaped Persians 20,000 I studied this for 4 years at university of maqaurie
@carlcarlson910 Hope you didn't pay for the education because your numbers differ from any of the disputed numbers given by present day historians. Not that anyone knows the exact details, and Herotodus was given to exaggeration but still... 2000? More like 7000 and "some may have escaped"? How about Leonidus ordered the retreat of the majority of his forces and held a rear guard?
very true herodotus said there were 2 million persians, but he had a tendancy to exagerate plus the simply fact that there was no way the persian navy could supply that many soldiers.
No, you know the warped and nationalist history told by your government to glorify your country. All countries do it, and rarely do any of them tell there people the true facts.
yea there were 300 spartans hand picked by king leonidas, and they were suppose to lead the battle, but behind them were over 7000 solders from other greek cities
Wikipedia can be edited by anyone. Someone who feels strongly for the Persians could lower the casualty count, or raise the amount of people in the army. Wikipedia isn't always a reliable source of information.
Sometimes they did to kill stragglers. Point is, it's a movie and not a documentary. Meant to entertain. It wouldn't be very entertaining if they stood in the same spot for three days and shanked the Persians.
And, as for the phalanx system, you just stated the reason why the phalanx is the greatest military tactical formation ever created, when you only need to defend from the front.
now a days they found out what the real numbers were it was 300 spartans, 7000 greeks vs abouut 150,000-250,000 men.....after the battle about 20,000-25,000 persians were dead....
why don't we put you in said situation and see how long it takes you to break down and cry like a little bitch because of all the pissed off persians trying to kill you, and all thats sepereating you from death is a 2 meter spear, a hoplon, and the men to your left and right.
you'd kill yourself out of fright.
btw, they DID break the phalanx when they got surrounded.. read up on your history next time.
WELL THE BATTLE IS RECORDED BY GREEKS AND PERSIANS SO IT AINT FANTASY. THEY MIXED BOTH STORIES OF THE BATTLE AND MADE A MORE REALISTIC VIEW. THIS ROME TOAL WAR BATTLE IS NOT IT. He did a great job though!
it aint his fault if he got the tinyiest minout thing wrong, no-one knows that much as the others do appareantly, so for all we no it was 3000 spartans vs 100,000 persians, and anyone who knows how to get those spartans, plz share with the rest of us, is it a mod or sumtin
if u used rome total war how did u get those spartans, cause all i have r those crudy, gay ones who die all the time and the armoured hoplites and miilitia and regular, but no elite, TELL ME
no it was 2 million not nesessarily fighting but that was the reinforcements.... the 300 spartans were aided by a naval force of 83 armenian boats... 2000 othere regular hoplite greeks and carcasions... but the exact numbers of persians were estimated between 700,000 - 2,000,000
dude it was 800,000 sent to kill the 300, but the real number was 5 million something, the other 4,200,000 men came after the 800,000 to win at maraton and athens
5 million, are you nuts? At the most, the Persian army had around 2,500,000. Wherever you got the idea of 5 million is beyond me...and most likely an unreliable source.
Ok europeans wrote this history, which the truth for me. What is your prespective? Don't tell me that you beat the greeks. They kicked your asses out of europe so many times. Alexander conquered the whole Persia and west India. What does the asian history says? Answer to us
the history what will be used and is very readable for european and american was written by european , also it is not objectiv ,but more subjectiv . if they read always that they had weak empires and they had sometimes good luck to win the fight , nobody would read that . and nobody would interest in own european history .(heroes made in hollywood)
