  • Such a beautiful distinct voice for such a beautiful song. Memories of my father and uncles rise within me.

  • Heartbreaking...Billy Ed's finest...beautifully performed by Kathy Matea...recovering country music star. Thanks, Kathy, for lending your Voice to help keep our mountains the way we found 'em.

  • Listened to this song on RFDTV, and im hooked on it, powerful song

  • Great song, Kathy is super. I would like to hear her sing a song Mick Hanly from Ireland wrote, It's called "Dust in the Storm". Her voice has the power to do it well.

Hanly also wrote. Past the point of Rescue that Hal Ketchum made into a hit.

  • what a wonderful song hope we ll have chance to listen to it Mawazine festival in Rabat soon

  • I was listening to Kathy Mattea's cd, "Coal" which Redd-Winged Blackbird is on it, and was crying..Was thinking of the 29 miners who lost their lives on the line in the mine at Montcalm. Please God continue to comfort the families that they left behind.. in Jesus name amen

  • After the recent tragedy in the West Virginia coal mines, this song says it all.

  • Mesmerizing!!

  • THis is my favourite song from the Coal cd. I've seen her do an acoustic version of this on something- just lovely!

  • I saw her perform on 4th of July in west virginia, she was great. This is a beautiful song and Kathy does a wonderful job of singing it. I have her cd Coal, it is very good.

  • THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS CLEAN COAL!

  • @keeperspring You are so right!!!

  • Red-Winged Blackbird (Billy Edd Wheeler) is one of the greatest coal mining songs ever written, and Kathy performs it beautifully !

  • love her songs but I cant find you'll never leave harlen alive?

  • The nigtingales absent-minded today

    the lilacs like cross-stitch clouds

do you want to kill my heart?

This nightingale does'nt merit to be killed

  • A great performance of a Billy Ed Wheeler song I have not heard in years. I say Kathy perform in Brooklyn about a dozen years ago. She was great then, and she keeps evolving. I can't wait to see what she will do next.

  • Featured also on Judy Collins "Live at Town Hall" her EXCELLENT 4th lp. I love this new version.

  • Dang, Kathy just gets better with age! The girl can SING!! I haven't seen her in person for many years but been a big fan since Sweet Talk in the 80's. Gonna add "Coal" to my collection.

  • "Coal" is such a great album!

  • ok, whats a bird?

  • Incredible !!!! GO KATHY ! ! ! !

  • That was definitely an Awesome video, I rated it a 5.

  • Kathy, your performance of this haunting song sends chills down my spine...it is deeply moving and stunningly beautiful. ~Willa

  • Kathy, you are a class act ... a timeless and passionate artist who leads with heart and voice.

  • So much emotion is put forth in this song and Kathy seems to do it with ease. Her voice comes across so clear because there is little backup from her band on this song. Less is truly more.

  • Kathy Mattea sings Billy Ed wheeler,Jean Ritchie, and Hazel Dickens better that anyone!
