good job explaining it. im taking a ceramics class right now and we're just beginnning to throw on the wheel. however, my teacher said that we shouldn't go full speed, especially while centering. hopefully you could clear that up for me. also, when i've been throwing on the wheel, my clay always loses in center when im trying to center it. figured out that im taking my hands away too fast. thanks ur vid was very helpful.
before opening a piece, going at full speed is a good idea-it helps in centering and coning and compressing (if you do that). BUT when you are throwing larger/a bowl, going at full speed puts too much force on the form, and it will fan out.
On the wheels we use, those knobs are removable. Most people here only put them in when they specifically need to throw something on a bat rather than directly on the wheel-head.
