  • who is the tenor student????

  • Thanks for posting this Paul!

  • This is an awesome performance with one of the greatest jazz composers, i dont like how quiet and distant everyones solo sounded, maybe it was the camera or the mics or something not picking up the sound right, but it still kicked ass.

  • @boricuatrumpet69 maybe because this is a straight ahead blues? believe me dude i go to berklee. there are plenty of amazing students who have their own voice. almost nothing you said is true. there is a time and place for everything and this song is the time for some straight ahead inside playing.

  • alto solos are not happening...

  • Great stuff from these youngsters (and a couple of oldies). Jazz, truly America's greatest gift to the world. As the Duke said "If ain't got that swing, it don't mean a thing". Boy, do these guys swing! sd goh (malaysia)

  • those alto players are hip!

  • Super JAZZ BANB GRATULUJE . Zycze Duzo Sukcesow .

    POZDRAWIAM .

  • How many jobs for these young cats when they graduate and walk out of there convinced the world is going to provide applause AND fiscal remuneration ...

  • @Arborwaychet there are plenty, i played in this band and have made my living from playing the trombone since i graduated.

  • @jazztrbn77 If that is the case I'm happy for you ... but if my own son were desirous of such a career it would be with the caveat of a contingency plan in the form of another qualification in another line of work ... it being my opinion that live music gigs can be fickle ...

  • @Arborwaychet I agree buddy.... being a performer sin't quiet glorious as it seems. If you son wants to do music teaching it is a secure job wheve he goes.

  • @jazztrbn77 you must be japanese. I went to berklee. when i graduated, I went to the career services office and NO ONE SPOKE ENGLISH.

fuck that shithole of a school. if you are american, they treat you like shit.

  • @johanivanovic I never had a problem there. Everyone was a so nice and friendly of all nationalities. Some of my best friends in life are the staff, faculty and students (alumni and present)

  • @jazztrbn77 Well, you're very lucky. All of my equipment was stolen, i got jumped many times, i had guns in my face all the time. my friends came to visit from NY and got arrested cus the crackhead in front of store 24 said we assaulted him. meanwhile he was just hallucinating from the crack. I was denied auditions every sememester because I wasn't a perf. major, I had coked-up teachers fucking completely lose it in class, it really was a terrible experience, and could not have been any worse.

  • @jazztrbn77 Sorry friend, that just isn't a real view of what's going on in the music world.

  • That bearded alto player sounds gash compared to the guy next to him.

  • Is that Ed Tomassi?

  • I guess these kids are pretty good for paying 40 Gs a year to "study" jazz...you know kinda like jimmy heath. oh wait...

  • @JHH89 it's true that most of what makes you better is the hours you put into practicing and listening by yourself, but it's rediculous to say that kids who go to berklee to study with some of the ebst musicians in the world are wasting their time

  • @JHH89 it's true that most of what makes you better is the hours you put into practicing and listening by yourself, but it's rediculous to say that kids who go to berklee to study with some of the ebst musici

ans in the world are wasting their time

  • @JHH89 most of these kids got a full scholarship, I know them all. Also people go there to network more than "studying". It pays off too, thats where a lot of their work comes from.

  • That student tenor player sounds great

  • awsome tenor battle

  • that trombone player is like on crack or something hahaha look at the way he's shaking lolol

  • there are no black people in this band at all

  • your point being?

  • That's why its not swin' LOL

  • Are you blind?

  • Hell Yeah !!!

    DDR

  • Ginger Bread Boy....Jimmy Heath

  • The younger guy was a much better player this time, in my opinion. Idk Jimmy heath was just sounding a little corny..

  • Bite your tongue...kid.

  • You're a blockhead - Go wet your reed...LOL

  • fail

  • Sometimes,Jazz is good to relax.. :-p

  • so many slick solos, wow!!!

  • Hey im asian, why be so mean dude?? :(

  • Sorry, only joking asian people are cool :)

  • your mom

  • so many asian ppl in big band.. -_- lol haha jk. no racism.

  • i love jazz. If i could play half so much than the drummer... because im a drummer. and the doublebass korean/japan...etc. guy! Excellent!!!!!

  • esto es musica. excelente.

  • Very nice ensemble! And Heath always owns... Heh, old school... Btw, who's the young tenor sax player? He's good!

  • Man he's amazing! I met him once... he is really cool

  • This is the kind of stuff that make me want to go to Berklee for college when I get out of school.

  • You are retarded...Heath got owned nowhere in this video

  • heath is amazing

  • not a groovin rythym section, iono, the drummer imho, is not playing like abig band drummer, the solists have it down, unfortunately, the groove isnt

  • This is an awesome song!

  • That student plays with more soul than Jimmy Heath. How is that possible?

  • It's not that... it's that it's two different era's of playing. Those student sax players are playing modern stuff, that give it a different flavor of soul than what is expected.

  • omfg at least two of those trumpeters have monette's...

  • Rarely do I find a trombone sexy.... but that was one SEXY trombone. :O

  • nice trumpet solo!

  • Sorry this took so long to answer the guy on the last page. Jimmy's CTA stands for Connie Teresa Ann,,,,,a girl Jimmy was dating back when he was with Miles, Miles talks about it in his autobiography

  • 5:23 - 5:33 is the shit. And this is just a random Bb blues by Jimmy Heath. Not sure about the title...

  • what song is this?

  • "gingerbread boy"

  • Is that John Golko on the Alto??

  • The Student owned Jimmy Heath in the beggining!!! HAha!

  • no such thing

  • No way he does. the student does well but Heath talks to him trough his instrument and corrects him in a way that makes him play better.

  • Lol i like how Heath borrowed a cannonball adderley line at 2:26

  • What a treat! It must have been awesome for these guys to be playing with Jimmy Heath, one of the architects of this music, a true legend..Gingerbread Boy, great tune. I think the band sounded good..I didn't notice any weird vibes between the alto players...A little competitive battling but nothing obscene, to me.

  • damn bone player with the edwards is buggin' out

  • man that trumpet... that trumpet... just blew my mind.

  • i hate when other players do that shit. they think they're hot shit so they try to call you out. those are the ppl that make you want to punch them in the face or shove their instrument down their throats.

  • who cares. the sound good and are obviously having fun.

  • i acutually sort of agree. it doesnt feel very good. it never really grooves. the soloist have a better pocket than rythym section

  • Comment removed

  • I thought the Trombone solo was the most tasteful in relation to the theme of the song...

  • this is great... hey does anyone know what heath's CTA tune stands for? i heard Chicago Transit Authority and I also heard it stood for the three things he liked most about women...

regardless, he's a legend and this is a nice performance

  • Re: CTA.....HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...Love it....

  • Sorry this took so long to answer the guy on the last page. Jimmy's CTA stands for Connie Teresa Ann,,,,,a girl Jimmy was dating back when he was with Miles, Miles talks about it in his autobiography

  • i checked some vids of alex terrier (alto player with that strange hat) and i have to apologize for my statement. he is a very talented and skilled player. berklee rocks!

  • It's pretty clear he's trying to "carve" the other alto player, but the bearded guy was having none of it. He kept taking the line that was handed to him and twisting it into something that was going to be difficult to continue, like he was trying to railroad the poor guy. Not a very sporting thing to do to your own bandmate -- save those sorts of shenanigans for when some random guy wants to sit in and thinks he can play!

  • The trumpet player, simply Amazing. I love the sound, I could never get my trumpet to sound like that.

  • isnt this a college band?

  • this guy on the trombone looks as he ever wanted to play the saxophone while lookin' at those two guys battlin' ((: i'm happy that i choose the saxophone!!!! by the way: great vid

  • Too much math.

  • Why is nobody talking about the trumpet player? I think he plays the most tasteful and in the pocket of any of the soloists, although all of them are good players.

  • Look at that bone player, the one that looks like Sean William Scott, he is DEEP into the music, ha, awesome.

  • This is the orchestra of the best jazz high school in the world? In case I am little bit dissapointed. These guys have pretty good technique, they play nice licks, I like all those out-harmony licks, extended quarts, but where is the soul?

  • High School?

    Um. College

  • of course, you´re right...sorry

  • The alto players are great, that one just needs to drop that stupid hat.

  • The problem today is that most of the young jazz peoble, wants to play like f.eks charlie parker, and practices 8 hours aday. but the only thing they will experience is that they can play charlies licks and not really improvise well.. however bill evans said, play something simple if it is real, rather than overplaying.. maybe after 10 years you will find out that you can improvise real very good, BUT REAL

  • I wish I knew what the tenor player's setup is. he has an amazing sound. great piece and great solos.

  • I love the critics on these comments. They can't play worth shit so they rip on anyone they can. LISTEN GUYS, the best don't need to criticize young players, they just lay it down and keep their mouths SHUT.

  • i think "the best" do need to criticize young players, because they're who we can learn from.

  • "the best" aren't the ones leaving the comments; The ones leaving comments are 2nd rate jiva-ass hacks

  • damn...such negativity...it pisses you off that much?

  • yes, I'm negative about negativity

  • a comment that criticizes isn't necessarily negative...it wasn't attacking the playing, i think most of the guys had something important to say, they weren't just talking shit.

  • the alto player with the tan jacket has the sweetest sound

  • his name is joe santamaria, and you can expect great things from him in the near future

  • I agree with that!!! He's unique...

  • in my opinion, i think all of these solos are special, and melodic. I mean, its obvious that they are staying in the melodic development of the chord forms but, I dont see what you are saying bassist1627 because they are extremely melodic. I can see why you would be confused because the song is uptempo, and most of the soloists are using running 8th note patterns at times. But listen to any charlie parker solo, and tell me that stuff isnt melodic, you know what i mean?

  • You guys got to do better than that on a blues. Man, that should be the first thing you can rip.

  • Most of the soloists are just lick players-not to say they aren't good, but how much of their solo do you actually remember when it's over? It just isn't melodic

  • are you saying jimmy heath is just a lick player?

  • Did I say jimmy heath is just a lick player? No, I said MOST of those guys are lick players. I find it pretty unmelodic- wanna hear a melodic big band with great soloists? Jazz at Lincoln Center is the best one

  • haha woa calm down, I was just being a smartass. I actually agree with you. I am actually going to be seeing Jazz at the lincoln center featuring Wynton Marsalis perform January of next year. I am very, very excited

  • Tenor player is Nir Namaan from israel and he is badass. He lives in NYC now.

  • The tune is Heath's own composition "Gingerbread Boy." Many listeners are familiar with the very different qunitetversion by Miles Daivis (with Tony Willimas' volcanic drumming) on the Miles Smiles album.

  • The student tenor player sure sounded ready to graduate. Anyone know his name? Is he working?

  • I love this clip! Super great young talent all around. Berklee really rocks. Jimmy Heath is a national treasure.

  • What tune is this?

  • That excited bone player is Paul Nowell, and he kicks some serious vagina!! AND ASS!!

  • that trombone player is way to excited about this....

  • yea!!!!
