You should know first how much a pair of MOTO GP slicks cost before talking.
This test is good because shows that almost 99% of the people that uses public race tyres like dunlop d211gp and are like20 seconds away from a moto gp tyre should first know how to ride a bike before thinking in tyres to go faster

Yeah, you would think people would actually listen to the video and take in all the info provided before makin themselves look like a complete moron. Its was definitely a loss of 8 seconds over 5 LAPS...
the video definitely said "the texas tornado then completed his 5 circuit laps in a time that was only 8 seconds behind his BEST, on the same circuit last year on competition tires"
in a report in a German newspaper about this event it is stated that he managed to do a 2:12,6 on the michelin tyres.... so IT IS 8 sec. per lap which is still incredible for a street legal tyre!
Geat rider and great publicity stunt, but I don't suppose it's possible that the stack of tyres they randomly chose from were all "trick" compounds were they? Sorry to sound cynical.
"8 seconds behind his best last year on competition tyres". Very impressive, but why were these control laps last year? Maybe his bike is quicker this year!
ya, thats what im saying. there is no way possible you could take a 800cc moto gp bike and get anywhere near a real lap time, on street legal tires..8 seconds? i mean, ya, 8 seconds is HUGE. but still, they werent out there TESTING, they were basically advertising. also, im pretty sure it was 8 seconds slower, PER lap. saying for the sake of arguing, he ran a 1.325 on the spec tires last year, on these he ran a 1.405..just what i think tho..
spec tires cant be bought. they're made ONLY for racing. moto gp tires, HA, when, and i mean WHEN, a blowout occurs, officals from the company jet over there with a tarp and cover it all up. no one is allowed to see them. and ya, 8 seconds, you think they're gonna thro some street tires onto a million dollar bike and take it for a spin? come one.
I'll have to disagree on this one. The 2ct took forever to come up to temp. and the sidewall doesn't have enough traction for me. And one more thing: the narrator said "only 8 sec behind after 5 laps....dude, thats like :32 seconds slower in a race of 30 laps. FUCK THAT! he would be in last place
what the hell are you saying? is it possible that they cost 25gs or 10gs a set? that is nuts. I believe I have heard that the cost is 500$ per tyre. For the gods name.... 25.000$ the set...
I also really want to know, what Edwards says about the R1.
No, I don't because all he will say, that it is the best bike available. Same for the Michelin tyre.
Don't be naive: This is not about testing this tire, it's about advertisment. Of course he wouldn't say anything bad about a michelin tire, even if he was convinced, that they are shit.
barneygumble123, It is Colin! He says what he thinks. See the Honda D*** sucking comment he made when he switched to Motogp. Maybe thats the reson they dont have a comment....
The fact that street tires lasted 5 laps on a GP bike is incredible in itself. 8 seconds is a lifetime in racing, but so what? The purpose of the test was to show how good these tires really are. How much do you squids think MotoGP spec tires cost? I'd wager it could easily be $25,000 a set, at a minimum.
Each tire, or per 4 tire set? I'd think it'd be a lot more than 10 or 15 per set. MotoGP tires might be more expensive because of the fact that they need much more grip per square centimeter, but maybe I'm wrong.
doesnt matter if he would have come in last in a real race with those tires fuck ass its just showing how the race technology has trickled to the streets and how high performance those tires really are. your prolly runnin dunlops or something you stupid squid.
Awesome test. This just goes to show you how important tires are. Simply changing the compound or tread pattern can add or subtract several seconds to your time.
Keep in mind a couple of things: #1, it's a comparison between full-on prototype racing slicks, and a street tire that anyone can buy. #2, the Sepang track is one of the longest in MotoGP at 3.44 miles (5.5km). Edwards best race lap at the 2005 Malaysian GP was in the low 2:04s. So 8 seconds is a difference of only about 6% - fast enough to make the GP starting grid. On STREET tires.
@danwildhirt and #3 I'm pretty sure MotoGP runs a much wider track tyre in the front that the street tyres can offer, so there is an instant disadvantage to bike setup.
All in all... not bad. For what its worth my favourite tyre for the front is the Pirelli
PP2ct are crap, overheating as soon as you go faster than your grandmother (Michelin ad notwithstanding).

Wow, 8 seconds is a huge difference, the racing tyres must be amazing.
I guess normal slicks are about 4-5 seconds quicker to street tyres, so latest top level slicks must put another 3-4 seconds on top of that.

8 seconds is a massive amount of time when you conside:
1 lap
same rider
same bike
think of the distance he'd cover in that time and that's EVERy lap!
henrymarkstewart10 2 years ago
no consider that tyres will do maybe 2-3 gp with that time..street tyres must do thousand of km..slick few hundred with normal use
