This was one of my parents' favorite party records back in the 1960s. My dad would always put this one the HiFi after announcing - with deadpan seriousness - that he had discovered a fantastic new singer-pianist duo and insisted that every hush up and listen. Different people at the party would "get it" at different times so some were snickering while others were wondering why they were.
I have to wonder if singing like this ever made it difficult for her to sing normally on pitch. Sounds like she put so much of herself into this that I can imagine it happening.
Got to love the little piano cadences. I should think it's just as hard to make the orchestra funny without coming off as another Spike Jones, or worse an imitator.
To perform this badly on purpose, just underlines what a great singer Jo Stafford was .Not to mention her husband's ability as a pianist! The sort of thing Les Dawson got off pat! Great.. What a real HOOT! Thanks for this.
I've not heard this in many years! Stafford was REALLY one of the great female singers of all time and yes, to pull this off takes a virtuoso, believe it or not! THANK YOU for remembering this album--it's a classic.
okay. I just heard jonathan schwartz play this on wnyc. I must have missed the part where he said it was supposed to be funny. I only heard him describe them as sensational, and I swear I thought the man had lost his mind. Glad I looked this up, and thanks for putting that info in the description.
Most of us could sound like this with no effort at all but for artists with their talent to play and sing this badly is truly remarkable. It also gives a little insight into their sense of humor
See if you can buy the album pictured. It's hilarious! Her sharp intonation, dropped beats and Paul's failed attempts at playing difficult passages will have you rolling on the floor!
I'm sorry, I'm rolling on the floor grabbing my sides after the first 8 seconds. That piano intro is superb.

My high school choir director turned us on to the Edwardses around 1970 and they have been favorites ever since.

I'm a music teacher and my daughter is a music major and we found this to be an absolute HOOT!

My father used to put the record in the middle of a stack of LP's and wait for people to start perking up their ears.

Only someone with perfect pitch (which Jo Stafford had) could pull this off so brilliantly.
