  • @plentifulceaser Thanks man, much appreciated! No real tips, other than following your passion. Also, get Jojo Mayer's Modern Drummer DVD - it will teach you tons.

  • Great drummer. Even better heads ;P

  • need to sync the A/V

  • I logged in just to comment. Love what you've done with the song, gave it some much needed depth, especially with the repetition this song requires. Glad to see that you deviated and didn't just cover it exactly, like a robot. Keep it up man!

  • @Tlaloc666 Thanks so much for taking the time to comment, and I'm really glad you liked my spin on this one!

  • what kind of chinese is that???

  • @clanofhyrule I've got a 19 inch Sabian Paragon on the right and a 20 inch paste Novo on the left.

  • Absolutely fantastic cover, and I found it incredibly interesting that you had many of the same interpretations as I do. Must be the Carey influence, as I too feel Loeffler can sometimes be a little too straightforward and needs to break out a little more complexity, especially with his cymbal melodies and fills. Anyway, great cover, and I can't wait to hear more from you.

  • @zynesthete From a fellow drummer, your feedback is very motivating. Many thanks!

  • @johnkew You're very welcome. If I may, I'd love to request to hear your interpretation of Clones. Loeffler has some great bass rhythms in the song, but I feel he needs to invest in some more cymbals and really expand that Carey influence. Multiple times I could hear perfect opportunities for some cymbal melodies or complex fills that really could have enhanced that song even more. Just a thought!

  • man u nailed it that was awesome!!!

  • Btw You should cover The Grudge man!

  • @CudilifestyleBB Great choice - the end of that song still gives me chills when I hear Danny's total mastery on the drums.

  • Nice man definitely hear the Danny Carey influence keep it up good shit bro

  • and also your stick flips are awesome :D

  • thanks for the invite, great job :-) u definitely are Tool influenced, especially after 2nd minute, it kicks ass :)

  • @RighteOusChicKen Thanks for checking out my video, and thanks for your feedback!

  • awesome job man,,,chevelle tunes are awesome

  • Good job - I like your improvisational fills.

  • Great job cool video

  • Hey, came here by request of the uploader. I must say, johnkew, you are one rocking son of a bitch. Keep it up dude, cause you're totally awesome!

  • I love Chevelle. This is such a solid rock song. Great job.

  • Nice job man!

  • thats sick how do you guys keep the rythems going i guess i will leave it to the professionals keep on rocking bro

  • Like the toms much better now. Very good drum mix with the backing tracks and great performance!

  • you're AWESOME man ...... :))

  • Face to the Floor is a fairly new song...you seem to have caught on to the rhythm quickly. Takes talent and skill to take on a song like that and blend in your own unique beats. I approve :)

  • Amazing man

  • Hey John! Thnx 4 inviting me too this vid of yours! I am really amazed by your spin on this song. You version is VERY Tool Inspired, it had a very smooth groove to it. Im sure if Chevelle ever need someone to fill in as the drummer for a bit, they'd go to you first! You should challenge your self and cover a song by Meshuggah! like "Bleed"

  • @ramses86 Thanks a lot man, that's great feedback! Man that Meshuggah song has some crazy footwork!

  • sick!

  • Hey there John ! Pretty nice cover man ! I must say that the sound of your toms remind me of mine, and I like that a lot, now that you've got better mics. You have very natural moves, and watching you play is always a pleasure. As for your posture (as you mentioned on my last video) you should think about it, if you don't want to end-up a hunchback when you get to be my age ! Hahaha! More seriously, just straighten up a bit and you'll be okay. Kudos !

  • @AlainHubert Thanks much for stopping by and commenting Alain, and yes I'm very happy with these new mics. It's funny how my posture on the drums has worsened over the past few months - watching your perfect posture really made me realize I have to nip this in the bud.

  • that sounds dead on man. keep rockin -\m/

  • John great work! Sounds FAT! Respect!

  • whatcha use to get the camera way up here?

  • Wow, that was really good dude!!!!!!

  • I enjoyed it John! I know nothing about drums. But, I know what I like and I liked this!

  • Sounds great, John! Did you see my video of this song live in my library? Love your videos.

  • @embalmers I did see your video - man it looks great, what did you record it with?

  • @johnkew Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ40. It has an awesome 24X optical zoom!

  • nice one man!!

    keep'em coming!!!:))

  • Kick ass man! How bout some drum lessons? lol

  • Again, great work, love the way you enjoy playing :)

  • Thanks everybody for your comments - all of your encouragement and kind words really mean a lot to me, and I really appreciate all of you taking time to watch and to comment.

    Cheers,

    John

  • I love you, BUT I'm not gay! xDD

    GREAT!

  • Me again - I noticed your wrists are at a slight invert when you play - didn't notice that before.I keep my wrists pretty much straight and keep the sticks line horizontal to my ulna. Nver thought I'd use ulna in a sentence hahaha... is that a specific technique or just the way you ended up playing?

  • @HeisW140 Haha, very little of my technique is intentional, and probably evolved from watching Neil Peart videos as a kid :D You mean the angle of my left hand around the 0:28 mark? I dip my hand like this when I'm playing ghost notes to prevent the butt of the stick from hitting my hand, to ensure good rebound. Basically I'm trying to free-up everything except the fulcrum and the fingers that 'dribble' the stick after a rebound. On the power strokes my hand is more parallel with the ulna.

  • you did an amazing job and the fact you put your own little style in there makes it even better. Thumbs up!

  • Awesome full body of sound on this one John... You keep getting better bro.. Keep up the good show

  • Everytime I watch, it gets better and better .

  • your fills from about 2:10 onward are GODLIKE... and you keep a really good groove despite switching between all those cymbals. Nice!!

  • @DrummingUpGames Thanks man! Those fills were very much Keith Moon-inspired, with the cymbal crashes in the middle of tom fills, and fills that crosscut measures. I don't hear many drummers doing that any more, except for of course Neil Peart.

  • Those toms sound great! Especially the floor toms! I have a Gretsch Catalina maple kit and I'm having trouble getting a good sound out of my 14" floor tom. I was just curious to know how you have yours tuned and if you had any tips on how I could achieve a sound like yours? Thanks!

  • @oggydrummer92il Thanks man, and I had the same problem except with my 16 inch floor tom. It sounded tinny and weak. Surprisingly, it was a real simple fix: I replaced the feet of the floor toms with some fat ones from an old Pearl Export series floor tom. Just replacing the feet made it sound 100% better. I can't believe Gretsch sends these great drums out with such cheap hardware.

  • @johnkew really? the gretch hardware it cheap? . i have a Catalina maple kit just like oggydrummer92il .. well i have trouble getting good sound to. but could it just be that i havnt tuned them right, :,( .. i am i pore child that can barely afford food . so do you have any ideas as what i can do besides change the toms out?... also what kind of cymbals do you have and whats the size?

  • damn great cover! i gotta check this band out

  • Chevelle, sickkkkkk woop woop!!! love this Irish rock band

  • @SuperJR03 I think Envy on that album by Chevelle, is great obviously you may of heard it, haha keep rocking out man, kudos man :DD

  • nice, keep up the good work man ;)

  • a bit of 46&2?

  • @iLikechevelle Good choice, one of my favorite Tool songs. But it was The Pot (see below).

  • @johnkew cool. Any chance you'll do another Chevelle drum cover? The Meddler off their new album has got a pretty cool beat. so does "An evening with El Diablo". great work.

  • Excelente cover amigo.... !!!! felicitaciones....

  • Nice job 5/5

  • I love this song! I made a whole Chevelle cd and jam out to them all the time, and you did them great justice with this cover. Amazing as allways. :]

I like the Paragons, Neil Peart style haha.

  • Another sick cover dude! I love your kit man, lovely set up!

  • Sounds awesome.

  • @johnkew have you ever listened to breaking benjamin?

  • I hadn't heard any Chevelle before this, they sound a lot like Tool, which is a good thing. Awesome cover!

  • Great work man, keep going it ;-) always cool cover !!

  • So freaking clean. Great Job as always. The sound is amazing also.

  • Nice stuff John... especially the stick tosses :-)

Was thinking you'd never hit that Novo hahaha Hows the sound? fit well with the Sabians?

  • @HeisW140 Haha, I tried those stick tosses almost as a joke on one take and had to stop because I started laughing. But then I watched the video and it looked kinda cool, so I kept doing it :) That Novo China sounds SWEET! It's got a nice high pitch and exotic overtones that really compliments the hand-hammered Paragons.

  • @johnkew I wouldn't dare try a stick toss - I drop them often enough as it is. Glad the Novo worked out in the kits "sound palette" for lack of a better term. Well done all round 10/10

  • Kudos to the first person who knows which Tool song/Danny Carey beat inspired the polyrhythm at 1:54.

  • @johnkew I honestly have no idea, I wanna say The Pot though...

  • @MrIPunchHard Right on man, you got it! It's that part at 4:30 of The Pot. Damn, I thought that would take longer for somebody to guess. This is fun, maybe I'll put together a montage of beats and make a contest out of it.

  • @johnkew Seriously? I just guessed... haha. I just had a good feeling about it

  • @johnkew yet again, insane cover. Was the beat inspired by the china section that starts around 4:36 in the Pot?

  • @BOOM8883 You got it! It was the same beat as the Pot. Thanks!

  • Love Chevelle and so do I love this cover!

  • Very good! My favorite is Mastodon - Blasteroid

  • first!
